Following the success of the animated TV series, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was meant to be a direct-to-video movie until Warner Bros. decided to release it theatrically. They believed in the film and thought it could be a big success. It opened on Christmas Day in 1993 at #11 and went on to make over $5.6 million dollars. According to Wikipedia, that was considered a failure at the box office but became a success in the home media market. Ironic.
