We often say that life can change in the blink of an eye. I wonder what it would it be like to know our lives could be at risk when we leave for work each day?
With only a few years under her belt as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Laurie White had been taught to expect the unexpected. Despite extensive training preparing her for adversity on the job, Laurie could not have anticipated what was in store on that fateful night.
Looking back on her initial responses to being shot in the line of duty, and the recovery process associated with her injuries, Laurie understands what it means to be resilient. Whether it was accepting her leg amputation, learning to walk with a prosthesis or recertifying to return to the line of duty, there isn’t a manual on how to bounce back from this kind of hardship.
Taking a realistic lens on important topics such as post traumatic stress, depression, suicide ideation, and other challenges faced by first responders every day, Laurie reminds us of the human behind the uniform.
