American basketballer, Nate Shafer, came over to Ireland on a Victory Scholarship in 2020. Covid meant he was unable to take up the scholarship but he reapplied the following year and was accepted. He played with IT Carlow. He had some great days but there were disappointments as well. For him, it was all part of the "fun".
In the National League, some of his colleagues were married with children and he says he was humbled to stand beside players who gave up their time away from families to play the game they loved.
American basketball might be superior but Nate says Irish basketballers play with their instincts and a sense of impromptu which can allow the game to flow.
He has not ruled out coming back to Ireland again.
