What have we done with our new freedoms after the transition? Are human rights still important in Eastern Europe? What explains the half-turn towards autocracy in these countries? Is there a social need for freedom, human rights, the rule of law and democracy 30 years after the regime change? We have examined these questions with our renowned panel on Human Rights Day: • András Bozóki, Professor of Political Science at the Central European University (CEU), former Hungarian Minister of Culture, • Thomas O. Melia, Washington Director of PEN America; former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State; program director in Hungary for NDI (National Democratic Institute) 1988-1993, and • Kim Lane Scheppele, Professor of Constitutional Law at Princeton University. The discussion was moderated by journalist Krisztina Bombera.
