A vegetação do Cerrado diminuiu ao redor de 8 mil km2 de julho de 2019 a agosto de 2020. As perdas foram maiores nos Estados do Maranhão, Tocantins e Bahia. O desmatamento equivale a quase 5 vezes a área da cidade de São Paulo. As principais ameaças ao Cerrado ocorrem pela expansão da fronteira agrícola principalmente nos Estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia). Conhecido como a Caixa D’água do Brasil, por seu enorme potencial de coletar e armazenar água, o Cerrado já tem seus primeiros refugiados pela água. Populações que começaram a migrar, porque os riachos que serviam suas comunidades de origem simplesmente secaram. Mas antes da chegada da soja, antes que começássemos, como País, a olhar para as vegetações nativas do Cerrado como um “espaço vazio” a ser ocupado, milhares de pessoas já viviam neste bioma, existindo em meio à fartura do bioma, como por exemplo as quebradeiras de coco de babaçu. O Cerrado e seus frutos fazem parte da vida de muitos brasileiros e essa biodiversidade, os serviços maravilhosos que este bioma nos presta, é essencial para todos, de norte a sul. Em contrapartida, é um dos mais ameaçados: Já desmatamos 51% do cerrado brasileiro. O avanço da destruição no bioma vem sendo, inclusive, mais rápido que o avanço sobre a Amazônia. Isso é muito preocupante e é preciso entender suas causas e as alternativas a tanta devastação. Precisamos olhar com mais atenção para este bioma – o Cerrado.

On the other hand, it is one of the most threatened: We have already deforested 51% of the Brazilian cerrado. The advance of destruction in the biome has even been faster than the advance over the Amazon. This is very worrying and it is necessary to understand its causes and the alternatives to such devastation. We need to look more closely at this biome - the Cerrado.
