The consumption of plastic is increasingly present in our lives. Packaging, PET bottles and disposable masks are part of everyday life, but their excessive consumption, wrong disposal and low recycling threaten the environment. Brazil is now the fourth largest producer of plastic waste: almost 12 tons per year, of which only slightly more than 1% are recycled. Despite the awareness that plastic is recyclable, a large part of the population does not correctly separate waste. This lack of awareness and educational programs coupled with weak legislation makes recycling difficult in the country. Single-use packaging - such as plastic bags - are the main villains in this scenario. Of the total 400 million tons of plastic produced worldwide each year, about 160 million tons are made of plastic bags. There is very strong propaganda by corporations to hold the individual responsible for recycling, while they continue to invest in increasing the production of plastics. Effective compliance with the policy, reduced production and product recycling are fundamental to changing this scenario.
