By 1984, Angela Lansbury had already been on American screens for 40 years, having made her film debut in 1944’s Gaslight, a film for which she earned her first Oscar nomination. As her big screen output began to wane, Lansbury did a lot more theater work, and then started to consider television roles, appearing in several miniseries in the early ’80s. But 1984 brought her the opportunity to do something she’d never done before: take the lead role in a television series. And what a series that turned out to be! Murder, She Wrote ran for 12 seasons and more than 250 episodes, re-establishing Lansbury as a household name. Before she died a few years ago at the age of 96, we had spoken to Lansbury many times about her distinguished career, and she told us why she felt Murder, She Wrote was the perfect thing for her to do at the perfect time.
