In this episode, we talk about getting back to 40K basics with Garagehammer. Garagehammer is the term the community uses for playing at home rather than at a store or an event. It’s what many of us started doing, and with the current situation its what many of us find ourselves doing again. We discuss how to get started, the benefits and drawbacks, and our plan for the future. We also discuss our upcoming Battlehosts Crusade campaign. Episode 125

Introduction

Our experience with Garagehammer

Why Garagehammer?

It’s unlikely there will be any events soon, and the game is too fun to NOT play; there is only so much painting and bat reps you can watch; with the new edition, it’s time to play again and that means very small groups outside of public spaces.

How to get started

Table, luckily the board size is smaller so your dining room might actually work! 44” x 60”

Other alternatives: multiple folding tables, some companies that build them specifically for 40K.

In the past, 4×6’ was a really awkward size to make work without custom building, more options now.

Mat as a playing surface. Painters tape to make smaller/chalk line, felt.

Terrain: this is where you can really make it work for you, lots of options!

  • At least 2 big ruins/obscuring pieces of terrain
  • 2-4 smaller pieces of ruins/obstacles
  • Dense cover: forests, structures, etc.
  • Smaller hills for movement/scenery/decoration.

Create a few different variations after you have an idea of what you can do so its not the same each time.

COVID Precautions

Benefits

No pressure to build/play armies for events. The “meta” is the garage, which means you can always control how the games turn out.

Play what YOU want to play; it’s really a back to basics approach.

You have access to all the food and drink in your house!

Take all the time you like to finish games.

Can talk through each of the rules/units and understand what is happening in game. Plenty of time to talk after the game and plan for the next one.

Drawbacks

Not as easy to coordinate, have to get a space prepared and sometimes your house is just not set up to host it.

Rules issues? May get rules wrong without knowing it.

Can easily be an unbalanced game unless both players understand what they should take compared to what their friend will be taking.
