Most of us women are very good at giving our time, energy and props to others but when it comes to accepting compliments, acknowledging our victories and all around relishing in success, we are excellent deflectors. Whether it's because we've been raised to not be "selfish" or because we don't believe in our self worth, it's sometimes easier to give appreciation and attention to everyone else rather than bask in our own accomplishments or worthiness. I got a taste of this recently when I received the print version of my first book. I felt a push to not enjoy the moment, to not share the news with friends, to not take a moment to say "Wow, I wrote a book!". Then I stopped for a second and thought, "What? Why is it tough to accept a compliment? Why do I want to push away a good moment." And those thoughts brought to mind the overall pushback we feel when the attention is on us.
