Round 24 of The Magic Sponge Podcast is here!

Brien (NRL Physio) and James will be running you through the analysis each week on all things NRL injuries. This will be your weekly one-stop shop for all things injury analysis in the NRL, aiming to be released the morning after the final game of the round each week.

This week we review all the injuries from Round 24.

Find the detail about concussive convulsion symptoms as mentioned on the podcast tonight:

Updated guidelines from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners: Concussive convulsions or impact seizures are occasionally observed following concussion in sport. These are usually brief in duration (<1 minute) and range from tonic posturing to full tonic-clonic seizures. Brief concussive convulsions are benign and have no adverse clinical outcomes. Consequently, investigations are not required, anti-epileptic treatment is not indicated and prolonged absence from sport is not warranted in most cases.

Sport related concussive convulsions - a systematic review 2018. Patient care - A significant amount of research has been performed regarding post-traumatic epilepsy, but sport-related concussive convulsions are relatively understudied. Clinicians often extrapolate management guidelines from post-traumatic epilepsy to concussive convulsions. However, based on this systematic review, we propose that concussive convulsions should not be modifying factors in the management of a sport-related concussion (i.e., there should be no changes in the work-up or follow-up of patients in this population) given the low incidence of long-term symptoms, scans with abnormal features, and the use or need for anti epileptic drugs.
