Your Church Friends Podcast was started in hopes of helping Christians and non-Christians alike see God, Jesus, and the church through a Biblical lens. We cover a multitude of topics, ideas, theologies, and thoughts. We try our best to have honest and genuine conversations about them all. We enjoy taking a side by side look at what has been taught or is being taught and comparing it to what the Bible says. As Your Church Friends, we hope that our podcast helps all our listeners to listen to ...

My name is Steve Weaver. I am a church historian with a PhD in Church History. Along my academic and spiritual journey I have been blessed with God with many friendships that have made an impact on me. I want to host conversations on this channel with some of my friends who happen to be church historians. We'll talk about how we met, how our lives and academic careers have intersected, and discuss history. Hopefully, others will find it interesting, but, regardless, I will enjoy it!

Speaker: Jeff Jarvis Throughout history, religious beliefs have been a double-edged sword, offering solace and guidance while also igniting conflicts and division. They’ve inspired acts of compassion, charity, and unity, yet have also fueled wars, persecution, and discrimination. In this final week of our current series, “What Ends Wars”, we’re goi…

We're going way back in the time machine to a conversation between Chris and Special Guest Rogelio Rodriguez Jr that took place in 2021. This conversation served as a follow-up to Season 1, 'The Sermon on the Mount.' In it, they discuss: What are the Beatitudes? How does Jesus' use of the word 'blessed' differ from our understanding of 'blessed'? H…

Speaker: Vince Klassen In recent weeks, we’ve delved into various scenarios shedding light on the What Ends Wars. From realizing that peace seldom emerges solely from victory to grappling with the internal battles we face. This week, we’re steering toward a slightly unconventional path. We’re set to scrutinize a deeply ingrained belief prevalent in…

Speaker: Jeff Jarvis Watching the innocent casualties of war is hard. People being forced to flee with very few belongings, often grieving the loss of loved ones. The suffering is hard to imagine. It’s always comforting to see countries and organizations willing to help step in and offer support in times of crisis. There’s something that feels so r…

Where did baptism come from? It’s not practiced in the Old Testament, but then you enter the New Testament and there is John baptizing in the Jordan. Where did he get the idea to baptize people in the Jordan for the forgiveness of sins, and what was the purpose of Jesus being baptized? Join Your Church Friends as they closely examine the origins of…

Speaker: Jeff Jarvis & Vince Klassen If you think about the foes you’ll wage war against in your lifetime, none of them will likely be as powerful and potentially as immobilizing as the voice(s) within you. You’re likely well acquainted with this voice. Sometimes we refer to it as our “Dark Passenger”. It can remind you of the ways you’ve screwed u…

Speaker: Vince Klassen After our discussion last week about how victory doesn’t necessarily lead to peace, we’ve been feeling somewhat disheartened. So, how do we actually foster peace? Our current cultural mindset heavily emphasizes victory – whether it’s a particular group, ideology, or even ourselves prevailing – as the path to peace. So, it’s c…

Out of the desert came a man with a message of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. That man was John the Baptist, and he did not shy away from telling people God’s truth. In fact, his first words in the Bible are, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?” So, if repentance was so important at the establishment of the …

Speaker: Jeff Jarvis Cathy and I have been married for over 33 years. You would think by now that we would never argue. Lol. There seems to be this subconscious moment, in the midst of our arguments, when I begin to imagine what it will feel like when I “win” the argument. When I hit that sweet spot and prove my point. Do you do this? I think to my…

Speaker: Trevor Dreher Recently, I heard a tale of an affluent elderly couple with a longstanding desire to witness the vibrant colors of autumn out east. Despite having the financial means to indulge in this dream without any repercussions, they consistently postponed the trip over the years, citing its potential cost. In truth, they could have un…

Speaker: Jeff Jarvis We’ve spent the last two weeks explaining where much of the toxic messaging around pleasure has come from – at least within the Christian tradition. Hint: we don’t think it comes from the bible. We’ve also made the case that pleasure needs to be accessed and celebrated in our lives. However, this raises questions, and likely it…
