“I used to be the largest dairy consumer on the planet. I used to eat so much dairy and meat. The more that I looked into the dairy industry, the more that I saw that it was the singular, most inhumane industry on the planet, that we've all been lied to, including myself, for years. I always believed that the picture on the milk carton, the cow standing next to her calf in the green field with the red barn in the back was true. It’s certainly the complete opposite.” – Richard (Kudo) Couto Richard (Kudo) Couto is the founder of Animal Recovery Mission (ARM), an organization solely dedicated to investigating extreme animal cruelty cases. ARM has led high-risk undercover operations that have resulted in the shutdown of illegal slaughterhouses, animal fighting rings, and horse meat trafficking networks. Recently, they released a damning investigation into two industrial dairy farms outside of Phoenix, Arizona supplying milk to Coca-Cola’s Fairlife brand. What they uncovered was systemic animal abuse, environmental violations, and a devastating betrayal of consumer trust. While Fairlife markets its products as being sourced "humanely," ARM’s footage tells a very different story—one of suffering, abuse, and corporate complicity. Despite the evidence, this story has been largely ignored by mainstream media—likely due to Coca-Cola’s massive influence and advertising dollars.…

What Makes You Howl? What Hisses You Off? These pet podcasts on Pet Life Radio shine a light on hot-button pet issues that make owners growl, wag and purr, or bare their teeth. Host Amy Shojai brings together an array of top animal experts to discuss, explain--and sometimes argue about--common and not-so-common pet peeves. Do you have an opinion about breed bans? What about declawing cats, or keeping “exotic” pets? Has your city limited the number of critters you can keep? Opened a dog park? Closed the shelter? Maybe pet food choices raise your hackles, your nasty next-door-neighbor critters potty in your roses, or Mom treats her Chihuahua better than you. Do “whispering” dog trainers make you shout with joy--or scream with frustration? When does veterinary costs become too rich for your (pure)blood? People love pets with a passion, but not all passionate pet lovers agree. PET PEEVES showcases pro and con opinions about deadly-serious to seriously-funny issues that irk pet-aholics of every purr-suasion. Dare to join host Amy Shojai each week for lively discussions that (gasp!) may even change your mind. Prepare to be challenged, entertained, and potentially PEEVED... but never, ever bored... on Pet Life Radio.

Service dogs have become a very public and vital part of our society. But there’s another area that doesn’t get quite as much hand-waving. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) includes companion animals as a part of the patient’s therapy in a treatment plan designed by a health care professional. For instance, a child might be more willing to toss a ball for the dog to fetch, than follow a human therapist’s instructions to rehab a painful injury. A pioneer in the field, Nancy Stanley first introduced "Animal Therapy" to severely handicapped children and to convalescent hospitals for the elderly in 1982 after founding Tender Loving Zoo, a nonprofit organization. She talks about her experiences, the benefits of pet therapy, and new gift book PILLOW WITH A HEARTBEAT, narrated by therapy dog Truffles. Dog-loving owners can have unrealistic expectations, and can easily misunderstand normal dog behaviors. They believe dogs purposely act "bad" to get back at the owner, or blame problems on the dog’s stupidity. Too often, these socially inept canines end up in shelters! Yet dog training CAN be easy and fun-- and literally can save your dog’s life and your relationship. To counter this trend, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APBT) has declared January to be National Train Your Dog Month, and Mychelle Blake joins Pet Peeves with all the insider details! In recent shows week, I’ve talked with ATF canine handlers partnered with accelerant detection, explosives detection, and tactical dogs. I’ve been impressed by the dedication of the handlers, and applaud the ATF’s position on positive dog training. Today we’re completing the series with a canine trainer for the ATF, Shawn Crawford. And while the ATF embraces positive training techniques, hopefully Mr. Crawford can shed some light on the puzzling issue of why the ATF hires "contract trainers" who may use less than positive methods to train tactical dogs and handlers. While I hate the thought of guns, I understand how hunters and sports-folk have a passion for them. And I also recognize the need for firearms in law enforcement to counter all the bad guys out there using deadly force. But I really like the idea of canine officers trained to assist their human partners. Because once that trigger’s pulled, there’s no calling the bullet back-- not so, with a tactical canine officer. Recent shows featured arson and bomb detection canines, and today I talk with Special Agent Mark Murray about his tactical canine partner, Barron. I had the privilege to see Barron and SA Murray give a demonstration at Thrillerfest 2009 in New York and am delighted to share some insights into this special partnership. Hurting animals is not only unethical, society agrees it’s sick. Appalling news reports of children torturing and killing cats and dogs makes pet lovers’ blood run cold. Such crimes demand more than a slap on the wrist, and not just to protect animals. Because abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people. Cat lover Dr. D.P. Lyle, the Macavity Award winning and Edgar Award nominated author of many how-to writing books including Forensics for Dummies discusses the link between animal abuse and serial killers. When an animal companion is "bad" we just want the behavior to stop. But waving a wand that makes the critter "act nice" could be compared to inserting a cork when diarrhea develops, without addressing the "why" of the symptom. We short-change our pets by not looking deeper into why they misbehave. Dr. Susan Friedman says we all behave for an effect, and it’s important to understand what prompts an action in order to address it.
