×Two men have been fined and ordered to do unpaid work after vandalising a statue of Paddington Bear. Pronouncing sentence, the judge told them that they were the antithesis of everything the bear stood for – kindness, tolerance and acceptance. While the label on Paddington’s coat reads ‘please look after this bear’, the behaviour of the men in question had demonstrated the very opposite. The two are now said to be extremely ashamed. This time it was the statue of a bear, but all too often we show unkindness to our fellow human beings with far worse consequences. It was Cain in the Old Testament, who, when challenged about the murder of his brother Abel, said ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ The answer should have been yes, and the fact that it wasn’t demonstrated how far he was failing to reflect the image of God in which he had been made. Surprising as it may seem being kind doesn’t come as naturally as we might think. More often than not we are governed by our own self-interest. Paddington’s character shows us the way, but we need more than a good example to follow. We need power to change and only Jesus can give us that. In 2019 Edward Spencer-Churchill reviewed the security arrangements for a solid gold toilet at Blenhiem Palace. It was part of an art installation. He announced that it would not be ‘the easiest thing to nick’. Sadly, he was wrong as thieves broke in and made off with it during a raid lasting less than five minutes. Fast forward nearly six years and the thieves have this week been convicted of burglary. Toilets and thieves once combined in some important teaching Jesus gave to his friends. Obsessed at the time with not eating impure foods he pointed out that it’s not what we eat that makes us unclean. While food passes through our digestive system and is flushed away it’s what comes from our hearts – evil thoughts, theft, murder, greed, deceit and the like – that really pollute. And like the thieves who stole the toilet one day we will have to give an account of ourselves. The good news is that Jesus not only pointed out the problem but also provided the answer. He took to the cross all of our sin and wrongdoing and, as the perfect Son of God, paid the price that should have been ours. It’s like they were just flushed away. In a recent interview Lady Gaga admitted that for many years her biggest fear was of being alone. In 2017 she confessed ‘I go from everyone touching me all day and talking at me all day to total silence.’ She said, ‘I think my biggest fear was doing life on my own’. She’s now happily engaged, and those days of loneliness are a thing of the past. But her experience is not uncommon – to be in the middle of a crowd and feel lonely. In Luke’s Gospel we read of a woman who found herself in just such a situation. On the edge of a crowd, she suffered with a health condition that meant she was isolated and alone and had been for many years. The man of the moment, Jesus, was at the centre of the crowd. If only she could get to him perhaps things might change. In her desperation she pushed through the crowd, touched his robe and knew, instantly, that she was healed. Immediately Jesus stopped the crowd and welcomed her. ‘Daughter’, he said, ‘your faith has made you well’. If you are feeling lonely today remember that Jesus is still the same. If you reach out to him he will stop the crowd and come and find you. The post Stop the crowd appeared first on Turn the Page .…
‘It’s going to be a spicy one’. So said Russ Cook, otherwise known as the Hardest Geezer, as he announced his latest challenge – to run the length of New Zealand. He earned his nickname after running the length of Africa in just 352 days – a gruelling journey through sixteen countries over mountains and deserts (not to mention being robbed at gunpoint). Struggling at one point with severe back pain but with no damaged bones, he decided ‘to stop mincing about like a little weasel and zombie stomp road again’. No doubt it will be that brute determination that will propel him along the 3,000km length of Te Araroa Trail when he sets off again in March this year. I’m reminded of the apostle Paul who travelled thousands of miles around the middle east telling people about the good news of Jesus. Along the way he was imprisoned, beaten, whipped, shipwrecked and in constant danger from pretty much everyone. But his determination was extraordinary. He wasn’t a man running aimlessly but, like Russ Cook, had his eye on the prize – the joy of offering eternal life to others. In a final letter to a young friend he wrote, ‘I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.’ Perhaps then the very first hardest geezer! The post Hardest geezer appeared first on Turn the Page .…
When 18-year-old Donovan Shears sent a text message to a number he had just made up he wasn’t expecting a reply. It was 1998 and he had his first mobile phone that could send text messages. So, he made up some numbers and fired off the simple greeting ‘hullo’. One recipient was another 18-year-old called Kirsty who thought the message was from a friend whose number she hadn’t stored on her phone, So, she replied with another simple greeting ‘hi’. Those first messages were followed by many more, and then a meeting and then a marriage and, in their own words, ‘years of love, laughter and partnership’. In a similar way many years ago, I said ‘hullo’ to a God I wasn’t sure existed. To my surprise and in an unmistakeable way, he replied ‘hi’. Those first exchanges were followed by many more, and then a meeting and then my decision to live wholeheartedly for Jesus. It’s now been decades of love, laughter and partnership. As you’re reading or listening to this you may never have thought much about God, in the same way Donovan Shears wasn’t thinking about a relationship when he sent that text. But like Donovan, if you dare to say ‘hullo’ you might be surprised to get a reply. The post Call me appeared first on Turn the Page .…
Both outgoing and incoming American Presidents have been generous with their displays of forgiveness. Four years ago, the clear up was in full swing after the storming of the Capitol on 6 th January 2020. Some 1,600 people were convicted, some for violent assault. Now Trump has set them all free. Perhaps even more surprising, however, is Biden’s offer of pardons for family members and key officials including the members of the House Select Committee who investigated the Capitol riot. These pardons are remarkable for the fact that none of those pardoned have yet been accused of any wrongdoing! No doubt many will cry foul at convicted felons being set free, and others being given immunity from wrongdoings yet to be uncovered. But that’s often the nature of forgiveness. It can seem so unfair when the guilty are either never held to account, or, when they are, set free. It’s why the grace at the heart of the Christian faith seems so offensive. On the cross Jesus took on himself all of my sin and wrongdoing. He paid the price and spoke forgiveness from the cross over those who put him there. His sacrifice sets me free. And if you wish, it can set you free too. The post Forgiveness for all! appeared first on Turn the Page .…

As we know the universe is governed by certain laws. One concerns putting away Christmas tree decorations: only when you have packed them all away will you find one you missed. I have done this so many times that I have grown wise. I pack the boxes and then wait several days. I just know I’ve missed something. This year it was a green sparkly star found on the doorstep after dragging out the tree. The lesson is a simple one: don’t be too quick to pack Christmas away. It’s made me think that perhaps we are all too quick to pack Christmas away. For a few brief weeks our homes have been filled with reminders of the reason for the season – trees that speak of eternal life, lights that shine in the darkness, gifts that remind us of the joy of giving, and carols that proclaimed a Saviour. But now we’ve packed it all away and the signs of God’s good news will quickly fade from our consciousness. Perhaps then we should just accept the law concerning tree decorations, put them away, and when we find the one we missed keep it out as a reminder of why we were celebrating in the first place. With Gen Z leading the charge 2024 is going to be another year where the cost of Christmas is loaded onto credit cards. But when did our love affair with credit begin? Back in the 1950’s the Bank of America sent an unsolicited credit card to every one of its 60,000 customers. Known as the ‘Fresno Drop’ it was a spectacular success, and within two years a million cards were in use. As we all know, however, the downside of credit cards are the huge debts and interest payments that can accrue over time, earning a lot of money for the lender. The ‘Fresno Drop’ was not the generous act of a big-hearted bank that it might have seemed. At Christmas we remember that God also loves to give credit. But the credit he offers is a free gift and the only interest involved is his interest in restoring our relationship with him. The ‘Jesus Drop’ of 2,000 years ago suddenly made this credit available to all. The Fresno and Jesus credit drops do have one thing in common and it’s this: ease of acceptance. Fresno customers just had to open an envelope and sign the card, and all we need to do is say yes to Jesus. The post Free credit at Christmas appeared first on Turn the Page .…
You won’t be surprised to discover that we spend a lot of our lives waiting for things. According to some research, we spend on average 20 minutes a day waiting for a bus or train, 32 minutes every time we visit the Dr, 13 hours a year on hold, and 38 hours a year stuck in traffic. So, what do we do while we’re waiting and in the end is the wait worth the time we’ve spent? Advent is a season for waiting and for most of us the wait is for Christmas Day. For adults the days will pass too quickly with our endless to-do lists, while for children the days will drag. But when the big day finally comes will our hopes have been fulfilled or will be left with feelings of emptiness and disappointment? For hundreds of years people waited for the first Christmas, the birth of a promised saviour, and they were not disappointed. Jesus came as God made flesh to dwell among us. The greatest gift ever given he alone brings the fulness of life we all long for. For Christians Advent is a season with a guaranteed outcome, the celebration of a perfect gift once given, and the anticipation of his soon return. Reporting on the resignation of Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, a BBC reporter referred to the Church of England as a ‘fading institution’. A cursory glance at the statistics from the last few decades surely bears this out. Perhaps we should not be surprised. Over the centuries church institutions have come and gone, not least when they abandon the Biblical authority which gave them birth. But I for one am not unduly concerned. Following more negative headlines about the church some years ago a wise friend of mine responded by asking ‘Is Jesus still on his throne?’ The answer is emphatically yes! The risen, ascended and glorified Jesus is indeed still on his throne and will one day return to judge the world. When church institutions fail and fade it is time to remind ourselves that Jesus didn’t call people to build an organisation but very simply to follow him and live the life that he revealed. So, while the Church of England as an institution continues to fail and fade, Jesus as the Lord of heaven and earth will continue to call people to follow him and, in that way, build his church. As the prophet Isaiah reminds us, ‘of the increase of his government there will be no end.’ (Isaiah 9:7) The post A fading institution appeared first on Turn the Page .…
Jesus once got lost. At least that’s what his parents thought. They were returning from a festival in Jerusalem to their home in Nazareth and travelling with a large company of family and friends. Jesus told a story about a man who had two sons. One day the younger son demanded his inheritance, in effect telling his father ‘I wish you were dead!’. Surprisingly his father agreed, and the son was soon far from home and splashing the cash on parties for his newfound friends. Before long, however, the […] The post No way back? appeared first on Turn the Page .…
Many years ago, I volunteered at a night shelter for the homeless in Bristol. One man in particular stayed in my mind. When the USS Enterprise launched in September 1966 ‘to boldy go’ where no one had gone before, it didn’t actually go very far. The premature death of someone we love is one of the hardest griefs to bear. We are left with the haunting and unanswerable question ‘Why?’ It seems so unfair and makes no sense. How could a good God allow such a thing? A while ago a friend of mine had to grapple with this question […] The post Where not why appeared first on Turn the Page .…
