Lost Cultures: Living Legacies

On the Season 2 debut of Lost Cultures: Living Legacies , we travel to Bermuda, an Atlantic island whose history spans centuries and continents. Once uninhabited, Bermuda became a vital stop in transatlantic trade, a maritime stronghold, and a cultural crossroads shaped by African, European, Caribbean, and Native American influences. Guests Dr. Kristy Warren and Dr. Edward Harris trace its transformation from an uninhabited island to a strategic outpost shaped by shipwrecks, colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the rise and fall of empires. Plus, former Director of Tourism Gary Phillips shares the story of the Gombey tradition, a vibrant performance art rooted in resistance, migration, and cultural fusion. Together, they reveal how Bermuda’s layered past continues to shape its people, culture, and identity today. In this episode, we slice deep into The Slasher Era —from its gruesome birth in the late ’70s to its bloody reign through the ’80s, and why it’s legacy still haunts pop culture today. We break down the rise and fall of the slasher sub-genre, the evolution of legendary villains like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, and what makes the “Final Girl” trope such a lasting symbol of survival and empowerment. Plus, we share our favorite kills, chat about the most faved movie, and debate which slasher film we’d actually want to survive. Sharpen your blades—this one’s a killer. Mind Your Beeswax is a fun title for a podcast episode! Bee keeping, farming, movies and Etsy sales on this, the 26th episode of the Have Coffee Will Travel Podcast. We start off with a movie review. It has been some time since we dedicated an entire episode to a movie review. This review is quick. Shawn and Leah watched Long Legs, starring Nicolas Cage. Reviews said it was the best serial killer movie since the Silence of the Lambs. Far be it from us to disagree with the critics, but the movie kinda sucked. Nicolas Cage gave a great performance, but the story was mediocre, and the logic was not logiccing. Next up, is the farm auction we went to. Shawn’s dad sent out an invite to check out a rural farm auction. After about an hour of driving we made it to our destination. If you’re into farming, this was the place for you. Most of the bidders were local Mennonites. Not being overly familiar with this group, the day was a treat. Interacting with a new culture is always a great thing. Trying to play with the horses and cows was another highlight. Leah did something different this past weekend. She took an introductory to bee keeping class. Learning about maintaining a hive was the major focus. However, Leah also learned about tools and equipment, what to wear and a whole lot more. It is possible she will start up her own bee hive some day. For now, she needs to focus on education before she takes on such a commitment. Mind your beeswax indeed! ETSY Shop round-up! We discuss some new additions to our stores. We also talk about some recent sales. Flopcast episode 681! It’s a simple plan this week: We’re just looking at what was on television in late May of 1981. Including: A bizarre Happy Days musical, a horrifying Waltons episode, Mork in a bubble, skydiving Hulk, something called “Women Who Rate a 10,” Bo Duke with amnesia, Daisy Duke on Enos, Batman on Fantasy Island, a Muppet on a medical drama, a dead parrot at Mel’s Diner, and way too many variety shows (from Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Robert Klein, the Gatlin Brothers, and the Mandrell Sisters). It all sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? You should probably cancel Netflix and invest in a time machine. Episode 681 complete show notes and links at www.flopcast.net! We’re watching Star Trek: Enterprise Season 2, Episode 5 “A Night in Sickbay,” but only Jamie has actually watched the episode. Archer brings his dog to the planet of easily offended people, despite it very obviously being a bad idea, and then has a temper tantrum when asked to apologize. Also, Porthos is sick, there is an escaped bat, and for some reason chainsaws are involved (?!). Plus, we have a special guest, medical expert Topher (Bluesky: @anisotoph ), that we get to torture with the medical “science” in this episode. Rikermendations: Maria: Deli Boys (tv show) Bill: My New Boss is Goofy (anime) Topher: The Salvagers series by Alex White (book series) Jamie: Ugly Betty (tv show) Sound assistance by K.O. Myers at Particulate Media If you enjoy the show, follow us on Facebook or on BlueSky or send us an email to enterprisesplaining@gmail.com .
