Awards season = the BEST week in fashion eveerrrr. And the best red carpet report, duh. In this week’s episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly Katz reviews the 2025 Oscars red carpet looks, breaking down the best and most memorable fashion moments of the night. Be sure to watch this episode on our You-Tube channel and follow along on Holly’s Pinterest Board for all the looks mentioned this week! From the fabulous to the "what were they thinking?", here’s an outline of the superlatives and honorable mentions from our picks. Listen to the episode for the full report! Holly’s Red Carpet Favorites Keltie Knight- BEYOND! o Look: Strapless tea-length white gown with beading on the bodice. o Designer: Paolo Sebastian o Why It Stood Out: A stunning, beaded masterpiece that made a bold statement. The gown's elegance was undeniable, with intricate beading that added depth and texture. Stacy Martin- Honorable Mention o Look: Beaded Louis Vuitton spaghetti strap triangle top dress. o Why It Stood Out: A sculptural, princess-seamed dress that was unique in its design. As we're sure this was much prettier in person, the intricate details and couture nature of this dress were truly so different from any other dress on the carpet. Snaps all around. Storm Reid- YYYAASSSS QUUUEENN o Look: Short red dress with a matching cape and belt. o Designer: Alexandre Vauthier Couture. o Why It Stood Out: A bold, striking choice for her first Oscars, showcasing a confident fashion-forward look; with a belt! Loving this on her. Ariana Grande- DYING. DEAD. DECEASED. o Look: Count them. Not 1 but 2 custom sculptural dresses. One red gown for the performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and one for the red carpet. -Designer: Schiaparelli SS25 Couture o Why It Stood Out: The structured peplum, sweetheart neckline, and crinoline were just mesmerizing on the red carpet gown. The performance gown was a mix of elegance and theatricality, complete with a 3D shoe illusion on the back. Whhaaatt? Fabulous times a gajilliion. Yasmin Finney- WOW: okay what am I looking at? o Look: Black mermaid dress with 3 foot sculptural feathers way above her head. o Designer: Harris Reed FW24 RTW o Why It Stood Out: A unique, avant-garde style that caught our attention for its boldness and creativity. It was so wacky that it took chic to another level. TOTAL badass proving fashion is about pushing boundaries. Charlotte Lawrence- Like I can't even. o Look: Pink beaded gown with low V-neck and bow at the waist. o Designer: Valentino SS25 RTW. o Why It Stood Out: An ethereal, fashion-forward look with delicate details, the gown made a powerful statement with its fresh, romantic vibe. JUST GORGEOUS. Demi Moore- ABSOLUTELY AGELESS. o Look: Silver beaded spaghetti strap dress with a low V-neck and train. o Designer: Custom Armani Privé. o Why It Stood Out: Demi brought the old Hollywood glamour with this masterpiece. The ruching on the hips totally cinched in her waist and accentuated her bust. Complete hourglass. Fashion "Don'ts" and "Like, really?" OYE. 1. Whoopi Goldberg- Just why. o Look: Shimmery plastic-looking off-the-shoulder shiny A-line dress. o Designer: Christian Siriano Fall 2025. o Girl, no: While a bold choice, the dress looked weird as it was too hip and youthful for her, leaving us wondering how this dress found its way to her. 2. Zoe Saldana- Nooooooooo.....(light sobbing in the background.) o Look: Burgundy tiered bubble dress with mesh bustline. -Designer: Custom Saint Laurent o Girl, no: A multi-tiered upside-down mushroom design that left her looking shapeless. The addition of sheer gloves only added to the awkwardness. Different? Yes. Flattering? No. 3. Sarah Paulson- I mean, help me understand, queen. o Look: Inflated red circus dress. -Designer: Marc Jacobs SS25 RTW o Girl, no: The exaggerated shoulder pads and over-the-top volume made it hard to appreciate the design's beauty. It looked like something out of Alice in Wonderland, on acid, inside of a dumpster fire, inside of a tornado. Like how could she go to the bathroom in this?!? 4. Goldie Hawn- Very, very sad. o Look: Gold strapless beaded dress with a cape. -Designer: Dolce & Gabbana o Girl, no: It felt dated and was a color that didn't go with her skin tone. Bad hair, the same color as the dress with plastic surgery gone wrong. Closing Thoughts *Don't forget to watch this episode on our You-Tube channel and follow along on Holly’s Pinterest Board** The extravagant gowns and bold red carpet choices seen at the Oscars for 2025 did NOT disappoint! Carolina Herrera by Wes Gordon: A Floral Dream o Trend Highlights: Wes Gordon’s Carolina Herrera collection brought an enchanting garden to life, with 3,000 cherry red ranunculus flowers blooming from the runway floor. Dramatic, sculptural flower brooches adorned belts, dresses, capes, and jackets. His bold, vibrant colors exude power and confidence, just like his clothes on the women who wear them. o Most designers like Sergio Hudson created menswear-inspired designs, such as long zippers on pencil skirts and vests paired with men's ties. All while having sleek, tailored finishes that could easily be styled for both work and weekend. 4. 🎙️ Fashion besties, buckle up because we’ve got an incredibly special guest this week! Meet Patrick Carrow, the creative genius behind Patrick Michael Accessories , the one-of-a-kind handbag brand that takes sustainable luxury to a whole new level. 💡 Make sure you tune in and subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch the video and see all of the products described in this episode.** From his background in fashion design at Drexel University to interning with the legendary Alexander McQueen, Patrick’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. His handbags —crafted from upcycled, discontinued, deadstock upholstery fabrics — are wearable art pieces that are as eco-conscious as they are stylish. If you love unique accessories that make a statement and don't exist anywhere else in the world, this episode is for you. Plus, Patrick’s Philadelphia storefront is a creative haven for local artists, proving that small businesses can thrive through collaboration. 💡 What You’ll Learn in This Episode: From Passion to Purpose: Patrick’s Fashion Journey - Patrick took a non-traditional route into fashion, enrolling at Drexel University later in life, where he discovered his passion for design. - The career-defining moment? Interning with Alexander McQueen in London, where he experienced a creative awakening that set the tone for his brand. - His upbringing in a creative household (his mother was a cake decorator and quilter!) played a huge role in his artistic approach to design. The Art of Sustainable Handbag Design - His passion for NOT contributing to the global overconsumption fashion crisis led him to source outrageous, discontinued upholstery fabrics, preventing excess high-quality materials from ending up in landfills. "Every handbag is one of a kind — no two pieces are ever the same..."-Patrick Carrow - He started with wallets and expanded into clutches and structured bags in various sizes, all with signature cabinet pull closures as bag handles. - His design process is deeply personal—he lets the fabrics dictate the shape rather than sketching designs first. The Business of Handmade Fashion - Patrick’s business started at street festivals before evolving into a brick-and-mortar store where he collaborates with other artists and designers in Phily's "Restaurant Row" neighborhood. - The 10 local artists that showcase their products foster a true creative community that gives their customers shopping experiences you won't find anywhere else. Supporting small brands and shopping small is the name of the game! - One of his most heartwarming collaborations? His 83-year-old mother’s quilted "cozy bowls", a microwave-safe fabric bowl that keeps your hands safe from hot dishes! Styling & Fashion Advice from a Handbag Designer - Let the bag be the statement piece — style your outfit around it! - Versatile fashion is the basis of creating interesting and unique looks — his clutches can be dressed up for a wedding or evening event in addition to denim for any casual-chic outfit. - Future Fab GNO Idea: His upcoming bridal party "Build-A-Bag" events allow brides and their parties to customize their own handbags while sipping champagne. #fabbuullouuuss - His work has gained recognition at the Philadelphia Art Museum’s Contemporary Craft Show— and his next goal? The Smithsonian Craft Show! #yyyaaassss What We’ve Learned This Week Patrick Carrow is the definition of creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship. His one-of-a-kind handbags are proof that fashion can be both stylish and eco-conscious, and his commitment to supporting local artists is exactly the kind of energy we love at Fashion Crimes Podcast. Enough to go around the world like, over 5 times. o Shocking truths about donation centers: the majority of clothing doesn't get resold. Instead, it's bailed, burned, trashed, or shipped overseas, often creating additional environmental and social issues for other countries. 3. How to Build a Sustainable Wardrobe o Tips for smarter shopping: prioritize quality over quantity, look for natural materials, and explore small, local brands with cult followings like Cezanne or Doen for resale value. o Partner with local resellers to ensure your preloved items have the best chance at a second life. 4. The Thrill of the Hunt: Jade's Resale Secrets o Popular resale items: leather, wool coats, denim, and cult brands. o Why plus-size resale remains a challenge and how the resale industry is adapting. 5. The Harsh Truth About Donated Clothes • Many people believe donating clothes ensures they’ll be reused, but the reality is far more complicated than that. Once it leaves your hands, you have no idea where it will end up, unless you resell directly to one person. • Jade shares insider knowledge from her experience working with donation centers like Goodwill: o Know this: a large portion of donated items never make it to the sales floor. In addition to being bailed and shipped out, items often end up in landfills. #SOBAD o Items in poor condition, such as stained or damaged clothing, are often discarded entirely and again, trashed. o Even well-made or high-end items may be undervalued or mispriced due to a lack of training among staff. #FACTS • Jade’s HOT TIP: Instead of donating indiscriminately, connect with local resellers or organizations that are incentivized to repair, reuse, and resell items, giving them a much better chance at a second life. Why It Matters: Every piece of clothing has the potential to be reused—but only if it’s handled thoughtfully. By being more intentional with where you donate, you can ensure your preloved items avoid becoming waste and find new homes with those who will truly cherish them. Listening and watching the video will help you understand the practical, empowering, and eye-opening insights on how to NOT contribute to the overconsumption crisis. Fashion besties-it's Friyyaayy! This week, Holly dives headfirst into the hottest Spring 2025 trends you need to know. Whether you’re a trend enthusiast or just trying to stay relevant, this episode is packed with style tips, insider knowledge, and plenty of laughs. It's your RIGHT to look fabulous for the upcoming season! LISTEN NOW! And follow along on this week’s Pinterest Board ! What You’ll Learn in This Episode: 1. Slim Sneakers & Sporty Chic: Sneakers continue their reign, but this year it's all about slim silhouettes. Think lightweight styles like Pumas, Adidas, and boxing-inspired high-tops. Pair them with flowy skirts or romantic dresses for a modern twist. Sporty chic also takes center stage with bold motorsport-inspired graphics, silk anoraks, and track jackets. Sporty Spics is BACK. Don't forget to keep an eye on collections from LVMH brands influenced by the Paris Olympics for high-fashion takes on this trend. Professional athletes are also in the fashion hot seat as brands are turning to them for strong brand influence. 2. Animal Prints & Stripes: (never gets old) Animal prints, including zebra, tiger, and snake patterns, are timeless yet reinvigorated for Spring 2025. Any of these prints as an accessory, such as a leopard-print shoe or scarf can instantly elevate your outfit and take it to the next level. Stripes are equally versatile, with bold options layered in contrasting widths and colors. Days of the boring horizontal striped t-shirt have new life again with this trend. Try layering different types of stripes for an unexpected play-on pattern. Designers like Proenza Schouler and Dior showcase this preppy-meets-edgy vibe beautifully. 3. Plaid and Preppy: Plaid remains a key player in the preppy fashion resurgence, but Holly’s rule is clear: less is more. Opt for plaid as an accent rather than the focal point—think flowy skirts, tailored layers, or abstract plaid dresses as seen in Ralph Lauren’s recent runway show. Pair plaid with skirts, jackets, loafers, or oxford shoes to nail the preppy look. Men's neckties on women are making a huge comeback as well. When in doubt, try a plaid bag or scarf to add some color to your look. Think of it as a neutral that can go with anything. 4. Fringe & Ruffles: Fringe isn’t just for country looks anymore. From leather jackets to car-wash-inspired fringe dresses (like Holly’s burgundy stunner from Toccin ), this trend adds drama to any outfit. Ruffles are another standout, seen in Zimmerman and Cynthia Rowley collections. Be mindful of fit—ruffles can either highlight or overwhelm, depending on placement. For a twist, try an asymmetrical version- this usually compliments the body to draw your eye down to create a longer, leaner look. 5. The Jeans Conundrum: Baggy jeans, dad jeans, and slim-straight styles are all the rage, with brands like Proenza Schouler and Pistola Jeans leading the charge. Acid washes, barrel silhouettes, and wide-leg fits offer plenty of options for every aesthetic. Let us help you navigate the confusion and choose the perfect pair for your shape and style. 6. Bubble Silhouettes: This playful, voluminous shape makes a comeback in both sophisticated and casual designs. From Jonathan Simkhai's elegant bubble dresses to Reformation's more accessible bubble miniskirts, this trend is back from OVER 30 years ago and is super popular right now. 7. Accessories Galore: Welcome to the era of "excessive accessorization"! Glamour Magazine’s term for this trend encapsulates stacked necklaces, statement earrings (check out brands like Lelet NY ), and bold scarves. Bags also get a refresh—think oversized totes, sleek daytime bags, and timeless clutches. Hot Tip: Remember, accessories are the key to taking your outfit to the next level. Whether you’re a minimalist looking for key pieces or a maximalist ready to go all out, Holly has all the styling tips and tricks to make these trends work for you. Why You Need to Listen This Week! Fashion Besties, this week we’re kicking off 2025 with an episode packed full of must-know tips and practical advice to elevate your online presence. Whether you’re updating your professional headshot, revamping your LinkedIn profile, or perfecting your dating app pictures, this episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast is here to help you put your best face forward! Tune in for expert advice, actionable steps, and, of course, a little Holly-style humor to keep you inspired. LISTEN HERE! Your profile picture is your virtual first impression, and we’re diving deep into how to make it count. If you’ve been putting off updating your photo or are unsure where to start, this episode is exactly what you need. 2025 will be the year you show everyone just how good it can get if they hang with you. Key Talking Points 1. The Importance of a Great Profile Picture Your profile photo sets the tone for how others perceive you online, whether it’s for business, casual relationships, or dating. It’s a non-negosh to have a current, high-quality image that reflects both your personality and professionalism for who you are today. Not 5 years ago or not next year when you lose weight. Today. Avoid outdated headshots that no longer represent you or unprofessional casual snapshots that won't do you any favors. We all have those floating around somewhere. 2. What Makes a Perfect Professional Headshot Invest in a skilled photographer who specializes in headshots. This is not the time for DIY attempts or relying on coworkers or family members to shoot your picture in the backyard. Wardrobe tips: Choose outfits that reflect your industry but also inject some personality—think bolder colors and structured clothing that will flatter your figure. No thin, clingy, or stretchy fabrics that can show problem areas or clothing that is too revealing. On the flip side, stay away from boring, predictable white shirts and blue blazers. Color = confidence. Hair and make-up: Think "camera ready". This means more hair styling and make-up that you would normally wear that will show up on film. Hair and make-up styling by a professional is key. The proof is in the final images. You won't regret taking this extra step. 3. Crafting a Memorable Dating Profile Picture Dating photos should exude warmth and personality without crossing into professional territory. Just say no to using your office headshot! #Dontdoit Recommendations: Start out with an updated picture of you from the waist or from your bust line up, in a well-lit environment. You can never go wrong with using pictures of you shot outside with natural light. Using additional pictures to showcase hobbies or interests, like outdoor activities or social events is always a good idea. 4. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them BUSINESS photos for PERSONAL profiles: Avoid using your office headshot on dating profiles. People want to know you outside of work. Keep the tone casual and approachable with personal pictures. Ignoring updates: If your photo is more than three years old, it’s time for a refresh. #FACTS Lack of wardrobe preparation: Holly advises always having versatile, stylish options in your closet to avoid last-minute shopping panics. Listen to the full episode for wardrobe suggestions! Closing Thoughts Your profile picture is more than just a photo; it’s a key part of your personal brand. A thoughtfully updated image can open doors, create connections, and help you stand out—whether you’re looking for career growth or meaningful relationships. #TRUTH THE TIME IS NOW. It's time to book your photographer, prep your wardrobe, and show the world you look too good to be ignored. #YAASSSS HOT TIP: Go back and listen to Episode 180 for more headshot tips, and check out Holly’s Pinterest Board for that episode. Regardless, let us help you put your party pants on. If you’re attending a glamorous party, hosting an intimate gathering, or looking forward to going to bed, (#justsayin), your outfit should make you feel fabulous and festive. In this week’s episode, Holly Katz is dishing out everything you need to know to slay your New Year's Eve look—from the hottest colors and trends to outfit formulas that will make everyone envious of your style. #duh Download this episode now, because no one wants to commit a fashion crime on the most glamorous night of the year! (LINK) Also: Don’t Forget to check out Holly’s Pinterest board ( What to Wear for New Year’s Eve ) for her curated inspiration! Key Talking Points 1. Trending Colors for New Year’s Eve • Merlot (Oxblood/Dark Cherry): A rich, sophisticated hue perfect for elegant sweater dresses, wax-coated jeans, or knee-high leather boots. Featured brand: Toccin . • Mocha Mousse: The 2025 Pantone Color of the Year , a velvety, light brown that pairs beautifully with navy, cream, or gold. Get on it! • Electric Blue: A bold alternative to black, ideal for standing out in stunning sets like Clara Sunwoo’s liquid leather collection. • Seafoam Green: A refreshing throwback with modern appeal. Check out ostrich feather jackets and leather pieces at Alice + Olivia . 2. Sequins, Metallics, and Statement Pieces • Sequins during the day? Yaassssss. And always a wise choice for New Year’s Eve. Beware of fake sequins- #fashioncrime (no glued-on glitter allowed!). • Metallic leather pants or sequin joggers? Always a good idea. • Holly’s styling tip: Pair metallics with neutral outerwear-timeless and classic. 3. The Ultimate Outfit Formula • Step 1: Blank Canvas – Choose a foundational piece like a dress, jumpsuit, or top. • Step 2: Layering Piece – Add a turtleneck, blazer, or even a lacy bra to create interest and texture. • Step 3: Outerwear as a Statement – A fabulous coat is a non-negosh for chilly weather. Don't be afraid to rock a pattern or brightly colored dress coat. Outerwear like these will totally stop the room when you enter. PRO TIP: (never!) Accessories are a must. Jewelry and shoes should enhance—not overpower—your outfit. 4. Avoid These Fashion Crimes • Sneakers on New Year’s Eve: Hard pass. Opt for metallic boots or sparkly heels instead. • The “Everyday Look” Trap: Don’t wear the same old jeans and sweater. Treat yourself to something special, even if it’s just for a casual gathering. The goal is to be the best dressed in the room. As always. 5. Welcome, Fashion Besties! It's officially the most fabulous time of the year, and this week, we’re serving you the ultimate holiday and winter trend guide for 2024. Whether you're planning your holiday outfits, updating your winter wardrobe, or simply avoiding seasonal fashion pitfalls, this episode is your stylish survival kit. Host Holly Katz dives into the must-haves of the season, the brands and boutiques to know, and—of course—identifies the most egregious winter fashion crimes to help you stay ahead of the curve. Trust and believe, this episode will make you the best dressed at every event and sleigh all day, (and all winter long!) #DUH (link) HOT TIP: Head on over to Holly’s Pinterest board for this episode and see all products discussed in the flesh for your shopping pleasure. Key Talking Points 1. Sweater Weather Must-Haves #nonnegosh Holly shares her love for cozy yet chic sweaters from brands like Toccin and Favorite Daughter , highlighting timeless pieces like cashmere pullovers and chunky knits. You can't go wrong buying one for you and one for someone else. #TRUTH She also adores Lingua Franca's custom embroidered sweaters with phrases like “Aprés All Day.” These pieces are not just warm—they're wardrobe investments that elevate your winter style and are hot-ticket gift items for past seasons that are still going strong. 2. Boot Trends That Work for Every Occasion Winter boots are a wardrobe staple that will never die. Classic riding boots, cowboy boots (short or mid-calf styles), and heeled boots in fun colors like burgundy or navy are here to stay. Get on the boot train; it won't let you down. Brands like Dolce Vita , Freebird , and Nordstrom's curated collections take center stage. Think you can get by without these winter essentials? Fashion. Crime. #weloveboots 3. Hot Blazers & Chic Outerwear The blazer game is strong this winter as it's been in past seasons, with leather and cropped styles leading the charge. Holly calls out Princess Polly for affordable faux leather options and highlights a chic tweed blazer from Anine Bing . She also warns against oversized, long shapeless jackets that add unnecessary bulk—a fashion crime we can all avoid with the right alterations. 4. Holiday Party Dresses Sparkly “festive tops”? No, ma’am. Show-stopping dresses from boutiques like Reformation , Saks , and Alice & Olivia ? Yes ma'am. Off-the-shoulder A-line dresses, pleated full skirts, and leather midi dresses are some of our top picks for the festive season. Let us help you get out of your comfort zone. Pair them with statement earrings and an evening clutch for full-on glam. Worried about a shoe? You can't go wrong with a metallic. They go with everything. 5. Accessory Alert: Bags and Belts These three main bags should be in your closet...and your life: a boss tote, an everyday handbag, and a metallic or fun-colored evening clutch . #DOIT She also insists on having at least two belts— one skinny and one wide —to instantly upgrade any outfit. Black and brown are the basics. Extra credit for white or a fun color. 6. Tops That Elevate Your Wardrobe Versatile, high-quality tops that can effortlessly transition from casual to dressy will never let you down. Don't compromise color or price for fit. You get what you pay for. Everlane and Hampden Clothing are great options for stylish blouses with clean lines and unique fabrics. Start small and figure out what looks best for your body type. Suggestions include but are not limited to: silk or silk-blend tops, billowy sleeves, and cap-sleeve blouses that layer beautifully under jackets or sweaters. It's a must for a cohesive wardrobe whether you're working from home or not. Fashion Crimes to Avoid • Using a cheap, distorted mirror as your “style guide.” Invest in a proper full-length mirror with adequate lighting! • Opting for boring, too-long, oversized blazers that you think hide your figure. Get them altered to emphasize your waist. • Settling for predictable “festive tops” and clothing that you feel you can only wear once a year at holiday parties. Opt for a fab dress and don't be afraid to be the best dressed person in the room. Also? Sequins during the day with jeans? Yes, please! Wrap-Up HOT TIP: Head on over to Holly’s Pinterest board for this episode and see all products discussed in the flesh for your shopping pleasure. Thank you so much for joining us in this stylish celebration of the season while addressing the pitfalls that can sneak into your winter wardrobe. Holly: "What do you consider the number one issue people face when they come to you for styling help?" Stacey: "For women between 40 and 70, it’s often about navigating midlife transitions. There’s a shift, and many feel a bit lost as to who they are and how to express that through their style." Whether you're navigating new life stages or simply seeking wardrobe inspiration, Stacey’s insights are exactly what you need! KEY TALKING POINTS **Stacey Bell’s Journey to The Style Sanctum** Stacey's love for fashion started with her grandfather, a men's clothier, and grew as she worked in various retail environments. After moving to Atlanta, she founded The Style Sanctum—a serene, private space where clients can comfortably explore new styles with her expert guidance. She understands the unique challenges of this age group, such as body changes, shifts in lifestyle, and evolving fashion needs. Stacey's goal is to make her clients feel purposeful and confident in their wardrobe choices, turning what can often feel like a chore into a transformative experience. **Conquering Body Image and Finding Confidence** Body image is a common struggle, especially post-menopause. Stacey shares her personal experiences and offers practical advice on how to dress in a way that embraces rather than hides your body. She believes that confidence stems from wearing clothes that fit well and align with your personal style, which can radiate positive energy and uplift your entire outlook at home, work, and around your peers. **Fashion Financials: Smart Shopping Tips** Do you have a financial block when it comes to buying clothing? Fashion doesn’t have to break the bank. Stacey and Holly discuss the realities of rising costs in the fashion industry and how to shop smarter. Stacey’s philosophy is rooted in finding high-quality pieces at reasonable prices, which is one of the many gifts that she brings to the table. She helps clients navigate their budgets without compromising on style, teaching them to prioritize investment pieces that offer longevity and versatility. **The Power of Personal Style and Jewelry** Stacey emphasizes that fashion should be about personal expression, not following trends blindly. Jewelry plays a pivotal role in completing a look, offering endless possibilities for self-expression. She encourages clients to explore different pieces, experiment, and have fun, reminding them that there’s no right or wrong way to accessorize. **Vulnerability in Styling** Fashion can be deeply personal, and Stacey embraces the vulnerability that often comes with restyling oneself. Fashion Crimes Podcast

Fashion Besties it's Friyyyyaaayyyy and you will not regret spending the next 30 with us. Welcome to Episode 221 of the Fashion Crimes Podcast. This week, we're diving deep into one of the most versatile and timeless wardrobe staples: DENIM! What you need, what you don't need; what's hot and what's trending. Whether you're a jean queen or hesitant to hop on the denim train, this episode will convince you why having the right denim is a game-changer. #trustandbelive From light washes to dark rinses, ripped to raw, we’ve got the ultimate guide to elevate your jean game. So, stop what you are doing, and let’s talk denim! It's all the rage right now, and not going anywhere anytime soon. HOT TIP: Follow along with Holly’s curated denim Pinterest Board! Lots of examples to inspire you there. KEY TOPIC POINTS Jeans will never go out of style and haven't for the past 150 years. So, here's the thing: if you hate jeans, this just means that you haven't found a pair that fits your body correctly. This is important. To find the correct fitting jeans, you must identify your body type and where you need the most support. It's worth the effort to find that fit because they will be in your wardrobe forever. You won't be sorry. “Denim is something that can sustain you for several years and is one of the most durable clothing items you will ever own.” – Holly Katz, your favorite personal stylist **The Must-Have Trio** Every wardrobe deserves these three staples: light and, dark wash, black and a white pair for extra credit! These pieces will effortlessly carry you through casual Fridays, chic brunches, date nights, and so much more. Think of them as the foundation of your denim arsenal. Think of it this way- a great-fitting pair of jeans can make you look YOUNGER. (#facts) It's all about the fit. It's a foolproof plan. **Holly’s 5 Factors to Consider When Buying Jeans** Before you swipe that credit card or buy the first pair you try on, let's keep these five factors in mind: 1. Rise: High, mid, or low? The rise determines where your jeans sit on your body and how they flatter your waistline. 2. Stretch: Look for elastane or spandex in the fabric blend for comfort and movement. Always do the sit-down test to ensure they aren't too low in the back or baggy in the front (too big) before committing to purchase. 3. Support: If you need extra shaping-you've come to the right place. Brands like Spanx NYDJ, or Good American can offer tummy control and butt support in a variety of styles. 4. Rinse: Dark washes can make you look slimmer (#truth) if that's what you're going for. Lighter washes are great for a laid-back vibe in the warmer months. Don’t be afraid to try colored or wax-coated denim for a fun twist-you might be pleasantly surprised. 5. Price: Whether you’re splurging or saving, fit is king. Vintage and secondhand stores can be goldmines for quality denim at a fraction of the cost. Make sure you TRY ON before purchasing and get familiar with return policies. A size 28 today might not be the same size 28 from a few years back. #justsayin **Brands That Love Every Body** For those seeking comfort, style, and the perfect fit, here are some Holly-approved brands: - Levi’s : A timeless classic. Start with the iconic 501s and build from there. #greatprices - Mother : Known for buttery-soft fabrics and flattering cuts. #alwaysfab - Good American : Inclusive sizing and their famous gap-proof waistband. #signmeup - NYDJ : Perfect for a little extra support and tummy control. #greatsupport Remember: Fit first, style second. Try before you buy! #foreverandalways Listen to the episode for more brand suggestions! **Distressed Denim: Still in Style?** Yes, ripped and distressed jeans are here to stay and aren't going away anytime soon! Luxury brands are even upping the ante, charging top dollar for that artfully tattered look. But if you’re not looking to splurge, distress them yourself for a unique, personal touch. **Is there a Denim Fashion Crime?** The only possible denim crime, in Holly’s view, is “jeggings.” Either wear leggings and work out, or wear jeans like a grownup. Please feel free to tell anyone who might need to know this. Also? Ill-fitting jeans that are too tight on your waist and cause “overage” and low-rise jeans that let your backside hang out. Come on Ladies (and Gents), no one wants to see either. Again, please feel free to tell anyone who might need to know. #ucandoit **Care Tips for Longevity** Don’t over-wash your denim. Every 3-4 wears is ideal and always air dry to maintain the fabric’s integrity. HOT TIP: For a quick refresh, try the freezer method—yes, really! It helps kill bacteria without breaking down the fibers. Don't forget to follow along with Holly’s curated denim Pinterest Board! Share with someone who just needs to know. Quick Personal Update Holly’s health journey: She is on her way to a bone marrow transplant on deck this week to treat a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. Hair will be gone but wig will be on! (Feel free to put that on a pillow). Her wig is cocked, locked, and ready to rock. Holly is feeling strong and positive – and a huge thanks to all our besties who’ve sent so much love and support—you keep Holly going! --- **Final Word for Our Fashion Besties** Ladies over 40, remember this: fashion is a tool, not a rulebook. Invest in pieces that make you feel confident and are authentic to who you are today. And never forget, we are *the best fashion friend you never knew you needed*. Holly will be lying around getting better and recovering for the next few weeks, so hit her up on her social with your fashion questions! Let me check her schedule...Yep, all clear. Welcome back to another fabulous episode of the * Fashion Crimes Podcast * with your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz! This week, we're diving into one of the hottest topics in fashion: “Building a Sustainable Wardrobe.” Whether you're eco-conscious or just want to make more intentional shopping decisions, Holly breaks down the essentials of ethical fashion, why fast fashion should be avoided, and how you can start curating a wardrobe that not only makes you look good but also feel good about your impact on the planet. Ready to level up your style game sustainably? Tune in for expert advice, personal insights, and the ultimate guide to shopping consciously! KEY TALKING POINTS: 1. What is a Sustainable Wardrobe? A sustainable wardrobe isn't just a buzzword—it's a thoughtful collection of clothing made with eco-friendly materials and produced in ways that minimize waste and pollution. Holly explains how it’s not about having less but about shopping with intention and choosing items that align with ethical values. 2. The Dark Side of Fast Fashion Holly pulls back the curtain on the fast fashion industry, which is the second-largest polluter in the world (after the oil industry!). #notagoodlook She discusses the social and environmental costs of fast fashion, from underpaid workers in unsafe conditions to the massive waste generated by cheap, disposable clothing. 3. Shopping Vintage and Second-Hand Want to make a difference? Holly recommends starting with vintage and second-hand shopping. She highlights some of her favorite stores like “ Madison & Fifth ” (Episode 179), and “ Ensemble Consignment Charleston ” (EP 209). By choosing preloved items, you're giving new life to garments and reducing demand for new production. 4. She learns the difference between synthetic and real hair wigs, and why you might want to invest in a wig that looks close to your natural hair if you’re aiming for a seamless transition. 3. Top Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wig Whether you're considering a wig for the first time or just looking to refresh your current style, this advice is solid gold. She encourages trying a variety of styles and even pushing your own boundaries a bit. If you’re daring, try something completely different, like going blonde—but remember, wigs are personal, and staying true to your comfort zone is always a great choice. HOT TIP: Understand return policies IN DETAIL and try on wigs on in person, because what looks good online may not suit your skin tone or face shape. Purchasing a wig virtually is a little bit more labor-intensive and risky, but can be done with the right guidance from a wig stylist at the boutique of your choice. 4. Wigs Aren’t Just for Hair Loss One surprising takeaway? Wigs have become a staple in the fashion world even for those who don’t need them for medical reasons. From celebrities to everyday fashionistas, wigs are increasingly popular for switching up your style. Who knew?!? Making this new world feel more approachable and fun, Holly gives the 411 on the wig process that can help anyone considering if a wig is a smart style choice. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Whether you're considering a wig due to hair loss or just looking to add some versatility to your wardrobe, Holly’s advice is empowering: “You can do it, and no one even will be able to tell!" She reminds us that, in fashion and life, it's all about confidence, and finding a wig that makes you feel fabulous is just one more way to express yourself. If you're looking to elevate your style game and stay ahead of the fashion curve, you don't want to miss her insider scoop on what’s hot and what’s not. Get a sneak peek at Holly’s top trend picks on her Pinterest Board ! Even though the shows were geared toward the Spring 2024 season, Holly’s keen eye reveals how many of these trends are already making waves this fall and winter. Know this: these trends are ageless and can work for any body type. So grab your favorite top-handle bag, buckle up with those trending wide belts, and tune in as Holly spills the tea on everything from oversized scarves to nautical vibes, all while helping you avoid those dreaded fashion crimes! Key Topics: **Fringe, Oversized, and Deconstructed Styles** Fringe was everywhere this season, from carwash skirts to capes, and it's a trend that’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Holly highlights how oversized everything—scarves, jackets, and lapels—is making a bold statement for both men and women this fall. She also discusses the rise of deconstructed clothing, like unfinished sweaters sewn onto shirts or jackets with extra lapels, double belts, and waistbands. These playful, edgy looks are perfect for those who love a more interesting, conversational style. **Early 2000s Nostalgia – The Return of Dress Over Pants** Love it or hate it, the dress-over-pants combo is back in full force, with sheer slacks and layered sheath dresses leading the way. Holly reminisces about rocking this look 25 years ago, (still love it), and she's here to help you embrace this trend for a modern twist. **Nautical & Western Themes** Holly reports a heavy nod to nautical styles on the runway, featuring everything from sailor knots and caps to navy-and-white stripes. Western influences also held strong with cowboy-inspired denim, patchwork, and distressed looks. If you're a fan of flowy peasant tops or chain belts with bold links, this is your season to shine! **Bold Colors and Rich Textures** This season is all about contrast and texture. Holly highlights bold black-and-white combos, deep jewel tones like jade green and navy, and neutral shades like cream and khaki. Crochet is making a statement, paired with sheer fabrics, while beading adds flair to coats and denim. Whether it's crochet or textured layers, the options for mixing colors and fabrics are endless! **Accessories Take Center Stage** The star of the accessory world this season is the top-handle bag. Medium-sized bags with structured handles were spotted everywhere, along with belts taking a lead role in fall outfits. Holly notes the revival of charms—both on jewelry and handbags—as well as bold hair accessories, making these must-haves for any fashionista looking to level up their look. **Fashion for Women Over 40: What Holly Saw at NYFW** For all the fabulous women over 40: a trend doesn't have to be conforming or "too young" for you to pull off. Many designers this season have created wearable looks that don’t just belong on the runway but are perfect for real life. #YAASSSS. From crop tops to structured blazers, there’s no age limit to pulling off these fresh styles. You can absolutely make it work for you. This season’s shows offered plenty of ways to incorporate trends like oversized scarves, wide belts, and utility jackets into your wardrobe, all while keeping comfort and sophistication front and center. HOT TIP: Don't forget to follow along on Holly’s Pinterest Board to see her picks from NYFW! And let’s not forget Ralph Lauren’s masterful show in the Hamptons—Holly was particularly impressed by the timeless, American-inspired looks that work across all demos and lifestyles. It was denim, denim and double denim paired with classic nostalgic 1990's colors, styles, and accessories. With what seemed like over 100 looks to choose from, Ralph Lauren had the most incredible, wearable styles that we loved so much. Fashion Crimes of the Week: Let’s Learn from Them! Holly couldn’t help but spot a few fashion crimes in the wild this week, but don’t worry—she’s here to guide, not judge! On this week’s episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast , Holly Katz takes us back to her summer road trip to Charleston, South Carolina, where she visited the charming new brick-and-mortar store of the * Goldbug Collection * on Spring Street. Founded by sisters Mini Hay Avant and Kathleen Hay Hagood, Goldbug is a local jewelry line born out of Croghan’s Jewel Box , their family’s iconic jewelry store in Charleston. As fourth-generation jewelers, these sisters have reimagined Southern charm with their unique costume jewelry, sending their bug-inspired creations all over the country. In this episode continuing her #womensupportingwomen series, she stops in and sits down with the Goldbug Collection team member Riley Steinhour while Mini and Kathleen were away to learn all about the brand’s inspiration, how it came to life, and why Goldbug is taking Charleston by storm. Be sure to head over to our YouTube Channel to watch this fun in-store interview! KEY TOPICS: The Goldbug Story: From Family Tradition to Fashion Forward Mini and Kathleen, raised in a family of jewelers, began designing jewelry inspired by Charleston’s low country beauty. From palm fronds to local bugs, the sisters turned their love for nature into a costume jewelry line that blends nostalgia and playfulness. #bugstobeautiful Holly and Riley explore the roots of the brand, which started in Croghan’s Jewel Box, a century-old jewelry store in Charleston, and how their family’s engraving expertise has added a personalized touch to their pieces. The Charm of Bug-Inspired Jewelry Holly and Riley dive into one of Goldbug’s signature elements: jewelry inspired by Charleston’s Palmetto Bug. While this Southern roach may not seem like a likely muse, Mini and Kathleen transformed it into an emblem of the region’s character and charm. #what?!?! The line also features okra-shaped pieces, peanuts, and fireflies, reflecting the beauty of everyday Southern life. Riley shares how these quirky pieces resonate with customers, turning Charleston’s pests into wearable art. The Craft of Customization and Engraving A hallmark of Goldbug jewelry is its customization. With engraving passed down as a family trade, Goldbug offers bespoke pieces that customers can personalize with initials, dates, or symbols. Riley showcases popular items like the “Forget Me Not” pendant and the baby puffy hearts, which make perfect gifts for loved ones. Whether it’s a charm that commemorates a special moment or an engraved token with sentimental meaning, Goldbug’s pieces are a fusion of family history and modern design. Mixing High and Low Jewelry Styles Holly discusses one of her favorite aspects of the Goldbug collection: its versatility in styling. Riley highlights how the costume jewelry can be easily paired with fine jewelry for an effortlessly chic look. Holly shares tips on mixing real and costume jewelry to create a bold yet timeless style. Whether it’s stacking bangles or layering necklaces, Goldbug pieces offer the perfect balance of playful design and classic elegance. Why We Love the Goldbug Collection: She wraps up the episode by expressing her love for the *Goldbug Collection* and why she is passionate about supporting women-owned, small businesses. #YYAASSSS Goldbug’s combination of family heritage, creativity, and Charleston flair makes it a must-visit destination for any fashion lover. But fear not—Holly is here to guide you through the hottest pre-fall styles so you can step into the new season with confidence. Make sure to check out some great pre-fall trends on your pinterest board for the week! Whether navigating warm days and cool nights or trying to fit in that last-minute vacation, this episode has everything you need to know about looking fabulous as you gear up for fall. >> Stop what you are doing now and watch this episode on YouTube ! Key Topics Discussed: Fall Suiting Trends from the Democratic National Convention Oprah Winfrey’s Show-Stopping Suit: Holly dives into the buzz surrounding Oprah's purple Italian silk crepe wide-leg pantsuit by Christian Siriano . Oprah's ensemble not only made headlines but also caught Siriano by surprise, as he didn’t know she’d be wearing his design on such a significant stage. Michelle Obama’s Navy Sleeveless Pantsuit: Holly applauds Michelle Obama’s choice of a navy sleeveless pantsuit by Monse, highlighting its military detailing and her signature bare arms—a fashion risk that only someone like Michelle could pull off so effortlessly. Kamala Harris’s Monochromatic Navy Suit: Kamala Harris made a powerful statement in a custom navy blue suit by Chloe, complete with peaked lapels and a matching pussy bow blouse. Holly highlights the significance of her color choice, noting that navy symbolizes the Commander in Chief, making it a bold move in a political landscape often dominated by white or purple ensembles. Pre-Fall Trends to Watch Liquid Leather: A favorite of Holly’s, liquid leather pants are the must-have item for the season. Whether you opt for real leather or a faux alternative, these pants provide a sleek, modern look that will carry you through fall. Chunky Jewelry: The chunkier, the better! Holly encourages listeners to embrace statement pieces, from bangle bracelets worn over sleeves to layered necklaces. It’s all about making a bold statement this season. High-Neck Tops: Turtlenecks and high-collared tops are back in a big way. Holly explains how to wear them to keep warm while staying stylish, including tips on scrunching your turtleneck for a modern twist. Suiting Trends: Whether you're inspired by the looks at the Democratic National Convention or just love a good power suit, Holly provides insights into how to rock a modern suit. She emphasizes the importance of fit and offers tips on mixing and matching pieces for a fresh, contemporary look. Pre-Fall Wardrobe Essentials: Jackets: Lightweight jackets are essential as we transition into fall. Holly suggests adding a denim jacket, pattern blazer, or a lightweight bomber style jacket to your wardrobe. These versatile jackets can be worn draped over the shoulders during warmer days or layered up as the temperatures drop. Boots: From tall boots to fold-over styles, Holly covers all the boot trends you'll need to know. She especially highlights oxblood and dark green as the colors to watch this season. Fall Florals: Perfect for weddings or dressy occasions, fall florals in darker hues are a fantastic way to transition your summer wardrobe into autumn. Holly discusses how to incorporate these into your style with ease. Fashion Crimes to Avoid: Round Toe Flats with Skinny Jeans: #Fashioncrime Fashion Crime Example: Holly warns against pairing outdated round toe flats with skinny jeans and a flowy top. Don't get sucked into the old flats from 15 years ago. Try a mesh or babydoll style flat instead. Matchy-Matchy Costume Jewelry: While it’s tempting to wear matching jewelry sets, Holly advises against this fashion faux pas. Instead, she suggests mixing and matching pieces for a more stylish and modern appearance. Logo T-Shirts: Holly firmly states that wearing logo T-shirts is a no-go unless it’s something truly meaningful. Keep it classy and avoid looking like a walking billboard. Plastic or Lucite Shoes: Say goodbye to plastic or lucite shoes, as they are a #fashioncrime. She includes Crocs and poofy cloud slides on her list of fashion don’ts. Stanley Cups as Accessories: In a surprising twist, we take a stand against the popular Stanley Cups. While functional, these cups are not chic and can take away from your overall look. Try upgrading to a more stylish water bottle if you must carry one in public. Final Thoughts: Now you can shop for your favorite pre-fall trends with your pinterest board and all of this free fashion content delivered straight to your inbox every single week. Please don't forget to share this with a friend or with someone you know who needs fashion help.
