The property at 7658 Union Hill Road, near Avery Elementary, may now be available at a reduced price. County leaders, including Commissioners Steve West and Richard Weatherby, are exploring purchasing the land for a future park, though development would take years. The site was rezoned in March for office institutional use, despite mixed public feedback and a petition with over 950 signatures opposing the project. STORY 2: Cherokee Authorities Looking for 13-Year-Old Last Seen Monday The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is seeking help to locate 13-year-old Jamel Nalls, reported missing on April 21 near Bells Ferry Road by the Cobb County line. Officer Jesse Hamilton received the Civilian Lifesaver Award. The project covers 3.595 miles of roads, costing $941,199.89, with an additional 0.405 miles possible if funds allow. Funded by Local Maintenance and Improvement Grants and SPLOST, work includes Great Sky Parkway, Fountain Oak Way, and Laurel Canyon Parkway. Cherokee County also approved a $3.36 million contract for resurfacing 17 miles countywide, including Towne Lake Hills East. STORY 2: Nelson Buys 4 Acres From Cherokee for Public Works Building The city of Nelson will build a new public works facility on a four-acre parcel purchased from Cherokee County for $120,000. Construction, in partnership with the city of Ball Ground, begins in May and will take about a year, with intermittent lane closures. STORY 2: Canton Police Investigating Fatal Crash The Canton Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer and an SUV on Riverstone Parkway near the I-575 southbound on-ramp. Emergency responders quickly arrived, and the interstate was temporarily closed for investigation and cleanup. The roadway has since reopened, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation. STORY 3: Cherokee County Puts Pause on Gas Stations and Convenience Stores Cherokee County has enacted a 90-day moratorium on new applications for gas stations, convenience stores, and car washes in unincorporated areas. Commercial: WILDLIFE EXPO_REV_FINAL STORY 1: Georgia Supreme Court raises concerns about 2019 child custody law The Georgia Supreme Court has raised concerns about the 2019 Equitable Caregiver law, which allows non-parents to seek custody or visitation rights if they demonstrate a parental role and bond with a child. In *Dias v. Boone*, the court reversed a lower court's decision granting Abby Boone equitable caregiver status over Michelle Dias’s child, ruling the law didn’t apply as Boone’s relationship with the child predated the law. While the justices questioned the law’s constitutionality regarding parental rights, they did not strike it down, instead issuing a narrow ruling specific to this case. STORY 2: Man Charged With Murder After Shooting at Cherokee County Home A man, David Daniel, 44, has been arrested and charged with murder after Michael Kyle Reid, 42, was found dead from a gunshot wound in a carport on North Lake Drive near Canton on Monday night. Deputies responded to the scene around 10:22 p.m., where Daniel, the boyfriend of the homeowner, was present alongside Reid, an acquaintance of both. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Daniel is being held without bond at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center as the investigation continues. STORY 3: DeJoy Delivers Exit Notice to USPS After Five Years Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced plans to step down after five years leading the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The USPS Board of Governors will begin searching for his successor. DeJoy, whose tenure was marked by controversy, implemented modernization efforts to cut costs by $4 billion annually and increase revenue by $5 billion. Despite these changes, USPS expects a $6.9 billion net loss in fiscal year 2025. DeJoy praised the 640,000 USPS employees for their resilience amid challenges and highlighted ongoing efforts to improve service standards and competitiveness. Break: STORY 4: Cherokee County's Homestead Application Deadline is April 1 Cherokee County homeowners have until April 1 to file for real property tax exemptions for the current year. Available exemptions include the standard homestead exemption, which reduces assessed home values for county and school taxes, and a floating homestead exemption that freezes property values for county taxes. Seniors 62+ with a valid homestead exemption for five years now qualify for a 100% school tax exemption, per Senate Bill 388. Additionally, House Bill 581 introduces a statewide floating homestead exemption for fire district and city taxes. Residents are encouraged to apply to reduce their tax burden. STORY 5: Peach Cobbler Factory Opening in Woodstock This Spring The Peach Cobbler Factory is opening a new location in Woodstock this spring at 1426 Towne Lake Parkway, Suite 104, in the Towne Lake Center. Operated by local residents Steve and Tonya Riddick, the shop will offer a variety of desserts, including cobblers, cookies, cheesecake, and cobbler shakes, along with savory options like a chicken pot pie-style cobbler. The Riddicks aim to create a nostalgic, community-focused space for families to gather and enjoy sweet treats. STORY 2: Highland Rivers CEO Melanie Dallas Sworn In to Statewide Commission Highland Rivers Behavioral Health CEO Melanie Dallas has been sworn into Georgia’s Behavioral Health Reform and Innovation Commission by Governor Brian Kemp. With 37 years of experience, Dallas brings expertise in mental health and substance use treatment to the Commission, which focuses on improving Georgia’s behavioral health system. The Commission, established in 2019, has influenced key legislation like the 2022 Mental Health Parity Act. Dallas, a licensed counselor and CEO since 2014, expressed her commitment to enhancing behavioral health care for all Georgians. STORY 3: Cherokee County Remembers Pastor and Counselor James Kilgore James Kilgore, a beloved pastor, counselor, author, and columnist, passed away on Feb. 7 at 88. Known for his dedication to helping others, Kilgore served as a pastor for over 50 years, founded Lake Arrowhead Church, and counseled families for nearly 40 years. He authored numerous books, including his latest, *Escaping Anxiety*, and contributed columns to the *Cherokee Tribune* for over 30 years. Remembered for his kindness and faith, Kilgore leaves behind his wife of nearly 70 years, Ruth, two children, and a legacy of service. Break: STORY 4: State Senate weighing in on growth of data centers Georgia lawmakers are considering a bill to prevent Georgia Power from passing electricity costs for energy-intensive data centers onto residential and small-business customers. Sen. Chuck Hufstetler, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the need for data centers to pay their fair share due to their significant energy demands, which account for 80% of Georgia Power’s recent capacity increase request. While the Public Service Commission (PSC) has already implemented rules to address this, industry representatives argue the bill unfairly targets data centers. The Senate committee has yet to vote on the measure. STORY 5: New Coffee Shop Opening in Canton Stitch Coffee, a family-owned shop by Dave and Geralyn Hickey, will soft open on Feb. 21 in Canton’s Riverstone area, with a grand opening planned 60 days later. Inspired by Canton’s historic cotton mills, the shop aims to “stitch” the community together. Offering a five-bean signature blend and craft coffees from Crimson Cup, Stitch Coffee will also feature bakery items from Southern Creamery and other favorites from New York and New Jersey.
