In 2021, Scott D. Anthony, was named the World’s 7th Most Influential Management Thinker by Thinkers50. Today’s turbulent times present unique and persistent challenges. Leaders are in a thick fog. Data to justify a decision comes in when it is too late to decide. Yesterday’s strengths become tomorrow’s weaknesses. Seemingly conflicting demands – purpose/profits, life/work, empowerment/decisiveness, meritocracy/inclusivity—feel paralyzing. When the fog of uncertainty descends, it is natural to want to slow down. The right mindsets, mental models, and approaches can allow leaders to navigate disruptive change, and own the future. Scott D. Anthony is passionate about helping individuals and organizations thrive in today’s world of never-ending change. He is a Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, where he teaches a course called “Leading Disruptive Change,” and a Managing Director and Managing Partner Emeritus at Innosight, where he helps leaders design new growth strategies, build innovation capabilities, navigate disruptive innovation, and manage strategic transformation. 2022 PEO Leadership Conference Keynote. Over the past decade, globalization, demographic shifts, and technology have changed the very landscape in which businesses are operating. The speed of change continues to accelerate with the third connected-age technologies of AI, Voice, 5G, and cloud computing. To further add to the uncertainty of the future, the economy is highly volatile and the world is facing geopolitical strains not seen in a lifetime. Rishad will distill this uncertainty and confusion into the key drivers leaders should focus on to prepare them and their companies for the Great Re-Invention. He will reveal how new scale is replacing old scale, why data is key but like electricity, not really a differentiator, how the rules of brand building require an understanding of “God-like” power, and how to separate the signal from the noise. Rishad Tobaccowala is a Senior Advisor to the Publicis Groupe where he has spent his entire 38 year career, most recently serving as the Groupe's Chief Growth Officer and Chief Strategist. Tobaccowala was named by BusinessWeek as one of the top business leaders for his pioneering innovation and TIME magazine dubbed him “1 of 5 Marketing Innovators”. He is in the Ad Age Interactive Hall of Fame and received a lifetime achievement silver medal from the Chicago Ad Federation. Rishad is also the author of “Restoring the Soul of Business: Staying Human in The Age of Data” which helps people think, feel and see differently about how to grow their companies, their teams and themselves to remain relevant in transformational times. We are very excited to have Fred Reichheld , the creator of the Net Promoter system of management and the founder of Bain & Company’s Loyalty practice , as our special guest on The Way Forward podcast series. Fred is known for “putting loyalty economics on the map” and is a trusted expert in customer loyalty. Two thirds of the Fortune 1000 now use Net Promoter Score (NPS), the world’s leading customer success and loyalty framework. Companies that achieve the highest NPS in their industry consistently beat the stock market over the past decade, with annual returns of 26%+ , and outperform the vast majority of private equity funds. The very best return across the universe of funds and ETFs tracked by Morningstar barely reached 19% over the decade. The issue at hand is that a July 2021 Bain & Co. survey of business executives revealed that only 10% of business leaders believe the primary purpose of their company is to enrich the lives of their customers . 90% of today’s executives dismiss the unbeatable advantages of a customer-centered purpose, which is sine qua non of loyalty leadership. In his latest book, Winning on Purpose , Fred Reichheld shows why all businesses should make enriching the lives of customers their primary purpose. It’s the best way to ensure sustainable growth, happily fulfilled employees, and robust investor returns. He unveils Net Promoter 3.0 – updated for our current business and social environment and introduces Bain’s latest invention, Earned Growth , which provides an accounting-based twin for Net Promoter Score.…
We were extremely excited to have Stephen Poloz, the former Governor of the Bank of Canada, kick off our 2022 Eye of the Executive In-Person Series in partnership with Focus Asset Management, on April 6th, 2022. Stephen is a widely recognized economist with nearly 40 years of experience in financial markets, forecasting, and economic policy, including 35 years in the public sector. The economic ground is shifting beneath our feet. The world is becoming more volatile, and people are understandably worried about their financial futures. Stephen Poloz maps out the powerful tectonic forces that are shaping our future, and the ideas that will allow us to master them in his new book, The Next Age of Uncertainty: How the World Can Adapt to a Riskier Future. These forces include an aging workforce, mounting debt, and rising income inequality. Technological advances are adding to the pressure, putting people out of work, and climate change is forcing a transition to a lower-carbon economy. The implications of these tectonic tensions will cascade through every dimension of our lives—the job market, the housing market, the investment climate, as well as government and central bank policy, and the role of the corporation within society. The pandemic has added momentum to many of them. PEO Leadership provides its business community the ability to leverage its collective knowledge, experience and network; to challenge and be challenged in a high disclosure, objective and trusted environment through a combination of Peer Advisory Boards, One-on-One Coaching, and Thought Leadership Executive Networking Events - all for the purpose of enhancing the personal and professional lives of its members.…
PEO Leadership's Michele Calpin sits down with Vanessa Bohns to discuss why we fail to recognize the influence we have, and how that lack of awareness can lead us to miss opportunities or accidentally misuse our power. Vanessa Bohns is social psychologist and professor of organizational behavior at Cornell University. She argues that despite the popular opinion that we need to gain influence in order to get what we want, we actually already have it — we’re just not using it mindfully. If you’ve ever felt ineffective, invisible, or inarticulate, chances are you weren’t actually any of those things. Those feelings may instead have been the result of a lack of awareness we all seem to have for how our words, actions, and even our mere presence affect other people. Weaving together compelling stories with cutting edge science and original research, Bohns offers science-based strategies for observing the effect we have on others, reconsidering our fear of rejection, and even, sometimes, pulling back to use our influence less.…

Runaway climate change and rampant inequality are ravaging the world and costing a fortune. Who will help lead us to a better future? Business. These massive dual challenges—and other profound shifts, such as pandemics, resource pressures, and shrinking biodiversity—threaten our very existence. Other mega trends, such as the push for a clean economy and the unprecedented focus on diversity and inclusion, offer exciting new opportunities to heal the world, and prosper by doing so. Government cannot do this alone. Business must step up. Sustainable business guru, Andrew Winston will explore: How addressing these challenges presents the greatest economic opportunity of our time; The repercussions of businesses not taking action on social issues; How leaders must rethink what business is, how it grows and profits, what its purpose is, and how it drives change in the world. This is no utopian fantasy. Courageous leaders are already making it real—and the stakes couldn't be higher. With bold vision and compelling stories, Net Positive sets out the principles and practices that will deliver the scale of change and transformation the world so desperately needs.…
To achieve success and happiness in the workplace, it’s not about changing what you do, but how you do it. People who use humor at work are more productive, less stressed, and happier. In our fall opener of PEO Leadership's The Way Forward Live Webcast series, we hosted a conversation with Andrew Tarvin , humor engineer, leadership expert and author of Humor That Works . The current way of working isn’t actually working. 83% of Americans are stressed out at work, 55% are unsatisfied with their jobs, and 47% struggle to stay happy. Today, 18 months into this pandemic, workers are quitting their jobs in record numbers. What are you and your leadership team doing to retain, inspire and engage your people and attract great talent? The purpose of Humor That Works is to provide you with a compact, cohesive resource for understanding the ‘ what ’, ‘ why ’, and ‘ how ’ of using humor at work. The goal is to make you a better leader by implementing specific strategies, you’ll not only get better results, you’ll also have more fun. This is a way of working that is different and effective. Choosing a humor mindset means understanding the various styles of humor and knowing which are appropriate for the workplace. In this session, Andrew Tarvin will discuss how to use humor to: Be a better leader To think more creatively To execute with excellence To communicate more effectively To create better connections in your professional and personal life…
Research consistently finds that purpose may be the most powerful influencer of our behaviours, attitudes, and motivation in organizations, work, school, and life. Yet despite the increasing evidence of purpose’s power, many of the organizations, systems, and institutions which dominate human life aren’t built to elicit and leverage the fundamental human search for purpose and meaning. Zach Mercurio , a purposeful leadership expert and author of The Invisible Leader , joined The Way Forward webcast to help us figure out just these problems. In The Invisible Leader: Transform Your Life, Work, and Organization with the Power of Authentic Purpose , international purpose and meaningful work consultant and researcher, Zach Mercurio, shows business leaders, educators, students, athletes, and parents HOW to discover, clarify, and deliver their reason for existence―their authentic purpose. The Invisible Leader takes the next step and details both how purpose works and the research-backed practices to implement it in our lives, work, and organizations.…

Doing well with money isn't necessarily about what you know. It's about how you behave. And behaviour is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Listen to PEO Leadership's The Way Forward Live Webcast 's conversation with Morgan Housel , award winning columnist, financial behaviour expert and author of The Psychology of Money . Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don't make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. During this interactive and live session, you should expect to learn the following: Getting Wealthy vs. Staying Wealthy - Good investing is not necessarily about making good decisions. It's about consistently not screwing up. The importance of Room for Error - The most important part of every plan is planning on your plan not going according to plan. It's all about Freedom - Controlling your time is the highest dividend money pays. Tails, You Win - You can be wrong half the time and still make a fortune. Nothing's Free - Everything has a price, but not all prices appear on labels.…
We - all of us - consistently exclude, underestimate, and underutilize huge numbers of people in the workforce even as we include, overestimate, and promote others, often beyond their level of competence. Not only is this immoral and unjust, it's bad for business. In a hugely impactful webcast with Kim Scott , leadership expert and author of Radical Candor , and Trier Bryant , diversity and inclusion expert, Leon Goren asked them about how a leader can use these teachings to change the culture of a workplace. Using examples and learnings from Kim's new book, Just Work: Get Sh*t Done, Fast & Fair , discuss a framework of how we can recognize, attack, and eliminate workplace injustice while transforming our careers and organizations in the process. Just Work reveals a practical framework for both respecting everyone's individuality and collaborating effectively. This is the essential guide business leaders and their employees need to create more just workplaces and establish new norms of collaboration and respect. He explains how we can stretch far beyond our capabilities, making impossible dreams much more attainable for all of us. We are all capable of so much more than we know. We all share the same biology, and the secret to peak performance is getting our biology to work for us rather than against us. In this interactive fireside chat, we cover: We are all capable of so much more than we know. Human potential is invisible especially to ourselves. There is a formula to achieve what you may believe is impossible. Learn how to get to a 'state of flow' - an optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best. Explore a quartet of cognitive abilities: motivation , learning , creativity and flow ; and why these skills are so crucial to peak performance. Learn about the defining moments of his life and career, the candid leadership and life lessons learned along the way, a bold outlook on the future of Canadian retail, office and residential real estate and receive an insider's perspective and entertaining anecdotes about working with Walmart. Mitchell is the founder, Executive Chairman and largest shareholder of SmartCentres REIT , a commercial and residential real estate company with 166 properties in each province across Canada. SmartCentres is publicly traded on the TSX with assets valued at $10.4 billion. Mitchell started SmartCentres with the vision of offering Canadians fair pricing on their weekly shopping needs. He put everything at stake to help Walmart enter the Canadian market, based solely on a handshake deal. That relationship deepened and he remains Walmart's only real estate development partner in the world. Mitchell's current focus is an unprecedented $12 billion transformation of SmartCentres' existing properties, from shopping centres to city centres. We kick off our 2021 The Way Forward Webcasts , with our good friend Dr. Jason Selk , CEO of Enhanced Performance and the former Director of Mental Training for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He helps business leaders, executives, and top sales people develop mental toughness, increase confidence and focus, and substantially grow their bottom line. Some of you may recall that Dr. Selk was our top speaker at the PEO Leadership Conference in 2013 - he was outstanding! He is recognized as one of North America's top performance coaches to both athletes and business executives. He helped the Cardinals win their first World Series in over 20 years in 2006, in 2011 he assisted the Cardinals in the historic feat of winning their second championship in 6 years and in 2013 he helped them once again make their way to the World Championships against the Boston Red Sox. Dr. Selk is a regular contributor to Forbes, ABC, CBS, ESPN, USA Today and NBC radio and television. His latest book Relentless Solution Focus will be published in January 2021. Here is what you should expect to take-away from our hour conversation and Q&A: THE #1 obstacle to mental toughness is our biological tendency to focus on the PROBLEM before the SOLUTION. As humans we tend to have a problem-centric focus (PCF) The opposite of a problem-centric focus is a Relentless Solution Focus replacing all negative thoughts about a problem with a solution based focused thinking. Relentless Solution Focus is confirmed and accomplished often with one simple question: " What is the one thing I can do differently right now that could make things better? " You should expect to walk away with some of the starting blocks of increasing your mental toughness allowing you to accelerate more effectively towards your professional and personal goals and objectives.…
In this week's episode of The Way Forward, Robert Chesnut , former Chief Counsel and Ethics Officer of Airbnb and author of his new book Intentional Integrity: How Smart Companies Can Lead an Ethical Revolution , speaks with Leon Goren. In the talk, Rob argues that the “ do no evil ” mantra is no longer enough, and companies that do not think seriously about a crucial element of corporate culture – integrity – are destined to fail. Defining integrity is difficult. As our workplaces become more diverse, global, and connected, integrity matters more than ever. It requires leadership from the top, but it also requires that everyone in the company have a shared sense of what integrity means and a strong, empowered voice to put that integrity into practice. Sounds difficult to achieve, but through his 6 C’s, Rob shares how leaders can engage and empower employees to recognize and tackle integrity dilemmas as they would any other business challenge, by considering both short- and long-term consequences. Join us for our PEO Leadership Annual Conference . We are expecting 1,500 C-level executives, many with their entire leadership team, to join us on November 18th and 19th. There is nothing like a crisis to separate the great leaders from those that have been floating through good economic times. Most leaders know how to deal with certainty, but few understand the importance of being agile when uncertainty surrounds them. On July 28th, as PEO Leadership President and CEO, I will share some of my learnings over my 25 years experience of working with leaders from all over North America, as well as my observations of what has separated the great leaders from the rest of the pack over the last 4 months. I will be joined by special guest, Dr. J.P. Pawliw-Fry , world-renowned leadership expert, New York Time bestselling author, co-founder and president of IHHP , a Fast 100 company (Profit Magazine's fastest growing companies), who will moderate our webcast. When times are good, it's very difficult to distinguish between average and great leaders - it takes time and numerous interactions. In a crisis, leadership skills, or a lack thereof, become evident very quickly - it's black and white, there is no gray area. In fact, the impact of leadership skills over the last four months has been so substantial that many leaders will be asked to step down and will be replaced by individuals who rose to the occasion. This insightful webcast will provide you with the following takeaways: What differentiated great leaders from the rest of the pack? The importance of EQ and FQ. The importance of having spent the time building the right connections and relationships well before the crisis. How the first 3 weeks of the crisis set the stage of whether a leader would succeed? Why the following 90 days won't get any easier?…
On February 16, 2020, I wrote an article titled: Pull Your Head out of the Sand - Something's Gotta Give . The first paragraph opened as follows: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, ..." so goes the famous opening line by Charles Dickens in March 1869. That line from A Tale of Two Cities perfectly captures where we find ourselves today. Its time to start thinking about reducing your risk exposure in both your business and investments and prepare to take advantage of various opportunities as they arise. A month later the S&P 500 collapsed just over 33%. No one can call the timing of any collapse but in this case the writing was on the wall. Today we are in the midst of a V shaped recovery, with the market as of June 18th, recovering just over 30%. Yet there exists almost as much uncertainty in what the future holds as we noted back in February. Should we be jumping on the exuberant momentum or derisking our portfolios and heeding Warren Buffet's wisdom "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when other are fearful". Thane Stenner , Managing Director of the StennerZhony Group, part of Morgan Stanley's Wealth Division and Chairman Emeritus of TIGER21 joins us in our The Way Forward Webcast Series for a fireside chat on July 17th. The StennerZohny Group has been recognized in Barron's 2020 Top 50 Institutional Investment Consultants ranking #8 in all of North America and #1 in California. Our interactive conversation will focus on providing you with some market insights and confidence on how you should be managing both your wealth creation and preservation during these uncertain times. "To buy when others are despondently selling and sell when others are greedily buying requires the greatest fortitude and pays the greatest reward" as John Templeton is famously quoted. It's a session you won't want to miss as we explore the following: What's happening in the markets and why the dislocation between the real economy? Are we in a "V" shaped recovery or is this really a lazy W with a slow recovery? The importance of having a well diversified asset allocation to ensure you don't lose those hard earned dollars. Why are there so many well-known value investors sitting on the sidelines? Are we in for another market reckoning?…

Now more than ever, leaders are faced with the challenges of finding balance in their lives. As the lines between personal and professional lives are blurred, prioritization of what is important becomes that much more complicated. Having written two best sellers, the first on how to become a values-based leader " From Values to Actions " and the second on how to build a values-based organization " Becoming the Best ", strategy and management expert, Harry Kraemer , realized that he was missing one very important pillar in his writing: how does one live a value based life? Harry's new book " Your 168: Finding Purpose and Satisfaction in a Values-based Life ", will help you work through the demands, distractions, and challenges that tend to never go away as a leader. Harry's insights will guide you to be able to identify the specific areas where all of your time, effort, and attention are spent - your life buckets - and reallocate them to reflect your priorities, choices, and unique circumstances.
