27:32In the 1980’s, things were a bit different. Coaches had sweet mustaches and they didn’t hesitate to pitch batting practice shirtless with a cigarette hanging from their mouth. And there was NO question about a team gathering after a game at a local restaurant like Barnaby’s and as us players knocked back our pizza and Cokes, our coaches enjoyed the fruits of their labor as they guzzled ice cold Budweiser... sometimes straight from the pitcher. In the last episode, you heard a few reasons why the original East Side Little League on McKinley Ave in South Bend, IN meant so much to us. In this episode, we share a few stories about some East Side Little League legends. Be sure to follow, like, or subscribe on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on. 40:35From the late late 1950’s to the early 1990’s, there was a small two field little league league park on McKinley Ave in South Bend, IN. Many kids on our side of town had a blast playing there, but the space was simply too small, with no room for expansion, so the original East Side Little League closed its doors and relocated. Therefore, all we have left are the fond memories that will be etched in our minds the rest of our lives. The majority of this episode is simply a collection of our memories about East Side Little League and while listening, you’ll get a feel for how much this place meant to us. Then at the end of the episode, my parents and I take it WAY back, back to the beginning. Even though the stories we share are from 30 plus years ago, you can tell from the excitement in our voices that East Side Little League was special place. 25:40There once were four dumb asses, Ignorant to heated, pressurized gasses. Can in the fire! Situation dire! They didn't even wear safety glasses! A 4TH OF JULY BLAST FROM THE PAST (originally aired July 2021) If you would have taken a stroll through our neighborhood, Sunnymede, in the early to mid 1990’s, you might have seen random firecrackers flying through the air, bottle rockets being used as projectiles, sporadic booms at odd hours, and the smell of slowly extinguishing campfires in the morning… except this was a neighborhood, not a campsite. In this episode, we share stories that are all based around fire, explosions, bottle rocket wars, and fireworks shows that lit up the night sky over Sunnymede and made many in South Bend mistake Wall St for the Las Vegas strip. Beavis and Butthead were watching an episode of us, when Butthead chuckled as Beavis chanted, “Fire, Fire, Fire” Be sure to follow, like, or subscribe on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on. As you heard in Open Lunches Part 1 "Pep, Pib, & a Race", it was sheer craziness that we were allowed to leave school at lunch & literally head anywhere our heart desired as long as we could cram it into the 45 minute lunch period. Challenge accepted. As you heard, safety was only secondary to getting the food we wanted. In this episode, we share that open lunches provided us with more than just food. Students learned many life skills and picked up many habits, good AND bad. Be sure to follow, like, or subscribe on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on. 44:01There once were open lunches. Ain’t talkin’ no fancy brunches! “We were immortal.” Jack did chortle. As his Festiva engine scrunches! Open lunches…. a high schoolers dream... a city and a school district’s nightmare. Open lunches were the decades long practice where high schools would simply open their doors up at lunch time and release hundreds of 14 through 18 year olds throughout the community to go wherever their little hearts desired, as long as they were back within the 45 minute lunch period. As you can guess.... we took FULL advantage of this in the 1990's at John Adams High School. As you'll hear, at the exact same time we were enjoying the freedom of open lunches, there was actually a large community debate to close them. Any reasonable human listening to this episode will understand why the debate ensued. Be sure to follow, like, or subscribe on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on. T’was a wild weekend that fall. Bad choices had come to call. Hank Jr. singin’ And cave wall clingin’. Single-digit IQs shown by all. When we purchased Hank Williams Jr. concert tickets our senior year of high school in September of 1995, we had NO clue that this weekend would be one that we will never forget. What you’ll hear in this episode, is my good friend Mike and I sharing the story behind our September 1995 trek from South Bend, to Bloomington, to Kentucky, to Bloomington, to Indianapolis, to Bloomington, to a cave, and back to South Bend, all……. in a little more than 48 hours. In this episode, you’ll hear us describe how things got out of hand. In a game of cat and mouse, we responded to the school administration’s new rules at pep rallies, not with obedience, but rather with outlandishness... including inappropriate chants, vulgar graffiti, and then things came to a head with an entire student body walk out. We end the episode with some armchair quarterback thoughts on how it could have been handled differently. Be sure to follow, like, or subscribe on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on. 34:15A few years ago, our buddy Todd texted us a picture of something that I hadn’t even thought of in 25 years. It was the picture of a t-shirt, a ratty t-shirt. The front of the shirt had the words written, "Phebus and Butthead", and the back had the words, “Stroke It” along with a cartoon depiction of the iconic cartoon character Butthead (of the duo, Beavis and Butthead) and our principal at Adams High School, Mr. Phebus, with his arm over Butthead’s shoulder. OBVIOUSLY, THIS SHIRT HAS A STORY. A STORY THAT SIMPLY CANNOT BE MADE UP. That was the first time that I’d laid eyes on that shirt in 25 years and instantly I tried to remember everything surrounding the creation of the shirt. I knew it had something to do with a large group of students in our class, the Class of 96, being complete idiots, acting a fool, mostly during pep assemblies. But it also had to do with us acting a fool in response to the school’s administration, led by the principal Mr. Phebus, trying to crack down on the pep assembly fun. But, the memories were a bit hazy so I knew it was the perfect topic to do some episodes on and truly go on a memory mission. So I met with eleven friends and even a little surprise guest that really helped provide some perspective of this period in time. What you’ll hear over the next three episodes, are the events leading up to the creation of the Phebus and Butthead tshirt, starting with our impressions of our first pep rally, ending with a little rebellion, and all the shenanigans in between. 36:05In this episode, you will hear about the birth of a Potato Creek State Park legend, The Cabin Troll. My original intent was to document a definitive account of the Cabin Troll's origins. Instead, I created more confusion, but that is the chaos the Cabin Troll loves. Every fall, since 1988, my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other random guests over the years have spent the weekend in the cabins at Potato Creek State Park in North Liberty IN, outside of South Bend. Anyone who spends time with us finds out very quickly that we are LOUD…. and even though we don’t mean to, we tend to crank the energy level up. And anytime you have a couple of dozen of us familiy members, staying in two family cabins (now 3), ages ranging from infant up to senior citizens, that energy level is amped up. You'll hear why our elevated decibel level invites the DNR officers to join us each year. Joe Namath? Nope.. you'll hear about the time our cousin Alex made a Super Bowl caliber exit. Lastly, you'll understand why a 5k trail run race and the cabins don't mix. 27:11There once was a laureate stressed, The rhymes wouldn't come, he confessed. Then he heard what Dave said And he cleared his old head! "Give yourself to the weekend." Hell yes!! Every fall, since 1988, my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other random guests over the years have spent the weekend in the cabins at Potato Creek State Park in North Liberty IN, outside of South Bend. Over the next few episodes, you’ll hear my family share memories about a very special family tradition that we have, Potato Creek Cabins Weekend. This first episode about Potato Creek, doesn’t really have any specific wild stories. Instead I wanted to set the scene and provide some perspective to our listeners of how far back this tradition goes so you’ll hear some of our memories as children. You’ll also get a glimpse of how our Potato Creek role models (our fathers and uncles) planted a Potato Creek seed into my generation of family members and then in future episodes you’ll see how that seed grew beyond anything they could have ever imagined. Over the 33 years that we’ve been going to the cabins, we have amassed quite the collection of crazy stories and memorable moments. Over the next few episodes, my extended family and I share some of these with you. This is not the history of my family at the cabins, it's not in chronological order, I basically just wanted to record some of our stories that are now infamous in Potato Creek lore. If you know my extended family, you’ll agree that we are seriously some of the most kind hearted people that you’ll ever meet. You walk away knowing that you just spent time with genuinely great people. Also if you’ve spent some time with us together, after picking your jaw up off of the ground, you may walk away with hearing loss and a new appreciation for peace and quiet. This is our final episode of our first season. This episode includes more of TJ and Tony’s mother Kathy as well as my father Joel, reflecting on raising us little knuckleheads. Kathy explains the "Spy Hunter" nickname that we gave her and my father and I discuss his reasoning behind dragging Jimmy and I into a liquor store as 16 year olds (most parents probably would have done the same thing). It also includes some concluding remarks from they guys, summarizing our childhood in Sunnymede. If you need a half hour to tune out the world, laugh, or reminisce, this podcast is for you. The first season of MemeryMission is based in the neighborhood that I grew up in, Sunnymede in South Bend IN. You will definitely enjoy hearing stories of us growing up in our neighborhood. There once was the Great Poodini Crossed legs to squelch a zucchini! Poop was held! Butthole swelled! His shorts ended up all steamy! Every crew has a member that can only poop at home. Right? While running the streets in the early 1990's, we had a friend that would disappear from the group. We'd turn around and see him standing still, legs crossed, face red, holding in his poop. You'll crack up listening to stories of what can happen when you cannot poop on the road. If you need a half hour to tune out the world, laugh, or reminisce, this podcast is for you. 25:49There once were incredibly bad choices, Maybe the boys were hearing voices. "Beats walkin'." Stupidity talkin'. Decades later they all rejoices! Imagine driving down the street in the early to mid 1990’s, looking up, and doing a double and triple take as you see a half dozen or so teenagers hanging off the side of an 80,000 pound moving freight train car. In this episode, you’ll hear us describe the thrills and chills of being dumb enough to not listen to our parents when they explicitly told us what could happen when you play on trains. If you need a half hour to tune out the world, laugh, or reminisce, this podcast is for you. There once was a boy in the "pit", Who cheated he must admit. His opponent rotund! That giant was stunned, By a face full of chalky green spit! We loved Tecmo Bowl, Double Dribble, and RBI Baseball on the Nintendo in the late 80’s and early 90’s! However, we loved getting out of the house to actually play those real sports all the while maintaining our mischievous athletic prowess. You will thoroughly enjoy listening to entertaining stories of us borrowing electricity for nighttime homerun derby, getting “fouled” by a 7 foot ogre, and playing basketball with a player who’s best offense was gas. Lastly, Vince McMahon asked US for advice on how we formed our world famous recess wrestling league. You will NOT believe the lengths that a 3rd grader took to win the day’s main event…. You will spit with laughter! The first season of MemeryMission is based in the neighborhood that I grew up in, Sunnymede in South Bend IN. There once were four dumb asses, Ignorant to heated, pressurized gasses. Can in the fire! Situation dire! They didn't even wear safety glasses! If you would have taken a stroll through our neighborhood, Sunnymede, in the early to mid 1990’s, you might have seen random firecrackers flying through the air, bottle rockets being used as projectiles, sporadic booms at odd hours, and the smell of slowly extinguishing campfires in the morning… except this was a neighborhood, not a campsite. In this episode, we share stories that are all based around fire, explosions, bottle rocket wars, and fireworks shows that lit up the night sky over Sunnymede and made many in South Bend mistake Wall St for the Las Vegas strip. Beavis and Butthead were watching an episode of us, when Butthead chuckled as Beavis chanted, “Fire, Fire, Fire” The first season of MemeryMission is based in the neighborhood that I grew up in, Sunnymede in South Bend IN. There once was a Deebo wannabe, Scared the shit outta my friends and me! Ghoulish eyes! Evil sighs! Beware the Legend of Michael Lee! The Legend of Michael Lee was our Deebo in the mid to late 1980's. Except we didn't have any chains or watches to hide, we just had to hide ourselves to avoid flying rocks, his menacing cackle, and his bright red eyes! You'll enjoy listening to us as we share a few tales of our Deebo, years before the movie Friday. Thank you for listening to our first ever episode of MemeryMission, a podcast where I sit down with longtime friends and capture wild, cringeworthy, and questionable memories from our past, and then share them with you, the listener, in engaging, entertaining audio stories. The first season of MemeryMission is based in the neighborhood that I grew up in, Sunnymede in South Bend IN. You will definitely enjoy hearing stories of us growing up in our neighborhood. I can pretty much promise that you will question our sanity and shake your head in disbelief, but you will appreciate the creativity, dedication, and stamina that we had while running the streets of Sunnymede in the 1980’s and 90’s. The first episode, “Tracks, Trails, & Trees'' sets the foundation for season one by introducing the longtime friends who will be joining me throughout the season. We describe and share stories about some of our neighborhood’s current and former geographical features that helped make our childhood, let’s say, mischievous. I welcome you to my new podcast MemeryMission! If you are brave enough to listen, you will hear an introduction to the podcast, as well as excerpts from our first season which is based on the neighborhood that we grew up in, Sunnymede in South Bend, IN. My vision is to sit down in the studio with decades long friends, capture our memories together, and then share with you in a fun, creative, audio story. Some of these stories are so entertaining (and sadly true), that they need to be shared. Over the years when we’re hanging out retelling some of our stories, other people, our wives, other family members, are truly taken aback and honestly question and comment on, first, our sanity, second, "How in the hell are you all still alive?", and third, “You need to write a book or direct a movie because you just can’t make this stuff up!" Well.... we're not writing a book or directing a movie (Hollywood did call but we're waiting until the perfect moment.) We are, however, sitting down in the studio and recording some of our tales of dangerously hitching trains, staging fake fights, pooping our pants, fearing the neighborhood bully, playing illegal homerun derby, almost blowing ourselves up, bottle rocket wars, and so on. I know you will enjoy!…
