Lost Cultures: Living Legacies

On the Season 2 debut of Lost Cultures: Living Legacies , we travel to Bermuda, an Atlantic island whose history spans centuries and continents. Once uninhabited, Bermuda became a vital stop in transatlantic trade, a maritime stronghold, and a cultural crossroads shaped by African, European, Caribbean, and Native American influences. Guests Dr. Kristy Warren and Dr. Edward Harris trace its transformation from an uninhabited island to a strategic outpost shaped by shipwrecks, colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the rise and fall of empires. Plus, former Director of Tourism Gary Phillips shares the story of the Gombey tradition, a vibrant performance art rooted in resistance, migration, and cultural fusion. Together, they reveal how Bermuda’s layered past continues to shape its people, culture, and identity today. Likt1:08:01
CNBC Marathon explores how different big tech companies are fighting for AI market dominance. A little-known AI lab out of China has ignited panic throughout Silicon Valley after releasing AI models that can outperform America’s best despite being built more cheaply and with less-powerful chips. DeepSeek, as the lab is called, unveiled a free, open-source large-language model in late December that it says took only two months and less than $6 million to build. The new developments have raised alarms on whether America’s global lead in artificial intelligence is shrinking and called into question big tech’s massive spend on building AI models and data centers. In a set of third-party benchmark tests, DeepSeek’s model outperformed Meta’s Llama 3.1, OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.5 in accuracy ranging from complex problem-solving to math and coding. CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa has the story. This video also includes Bosa’s full interview with Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas. Humanoid robots are catching the attention, and billions of investment dollars, from big tech companies like Amazon, Google, Nvidia and Microsoft. Elon Musk is betting the future of Tesla on these machines, predicting its robot, Optimus, could propel it to a $25 trillion market cap. Powered by artificial intelligence, these bots have seen quantum leaps in what they’re capable of in just the past few years. CNBC’s Kate Rooney speaks with Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Sanctuary AI and others to explore the rise of these AI-driven humanoids, if they’re a cure-all for our global workforce problems, or if this is yet another tech bubble. Microsoft, Google and Amazon, along with other tech companies, have been getting creative in how they’re poaching talent from top artificial intelligence startups. Earlier this month, Google inked an unusual deal with Character.ai to hire away its prominent founder, Noam Shazeer, along with more than one-fifth of its workforce while also licensing its technology. It looked like an acquisition, but the deal was structured so that it wasn’t. Google wasn’t the first to take this approach. In March, Microsoft signed a deal with Inflection that allowed Microsoft to use Inflection’s models and to hire most of the startup’s staff. Amazon followed in June with a faux acquisition of Adept where it hired top talent from the AI startup and licensed its technology. It’s a playbook that skirts regulators and their crackdown on Big Tech dominance, provides an exit for AI startups struggling to make money, and allows megacaps to pick up the talent needed in the AI arms race. But while tech giants might think they’re outsmarting antitrust enforcers, they could be playing with fire. CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa has the story. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 01:17 How China’s New AI Model DeepSeek Is Threatening U.S. Dominance (Published Jan 2025) 41:40 Why Nvidia, Tesla, Amazon And More Are Betting Big On AI-Powered Humanoid Robots (Published August 2024) 58:48 How Google, Microsoft And Amazon Are Raiding AI Startups For Talent (Published July 2024) Anchor: Deirdre Bosa Produced by: Andrew Evers. The size of a double-decker bus, only five of these machines have been shipped so far. It’s unclear how Trump’s tariffs will impact the complex global supply chain for the lithography machines. Nike and Adidas have long dominated the global sportswear market, but a Swiss sneaker company is quickly gaining ground. The brand On sells premium priced athletic wear and is most known for its trademark running sneakers with hollow pads in the sole. In its most recent quarter, the company reported net sales of $869 million, over 40% higher from the year prior. Meanwhile, Nike’s revenues have fallen 9% this year, compared to the same quarter last year. Nike still owns around 40% of global market share in athletic footwear, and On makes up a little under 3%, but that share has increased eightfold since 2019. Experts say On is now one of the biggest challengers in sportswear. But with Nike mounting a comeback and potential tariffs looming, can the Swiss brand maintain its edge? CNBC visited On’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland to get a behind-the-scenes look at the company and how its shoes are made. Volatile lumber prices have been causing uncertainty for construction businesses. In April 2025, the price of softwood lumber was 23% higher than the previous year. Lumber futures in the first quarter of 2025 have also surged on fears of higher duties as well as sawmill closures across North America. That has impacted some of the U.S. biggest homebuilders like Lennar, D.R. Horton and Toll Brothers all, which suffered declines in their stocks during the spring. But while lumber escaped the latest round of tariffs they are on the radar of the Trump administration. Canada accounts for about 85% of all U.S. softwood lumber imports and represents almost a quarter of U.S. supply. Chapters: 0:00 - 2:51 Introduction 2:52 - 5:23 Chapter 1. Ever since American astronauts landed on the Moon for the first time in 1969, there’s been an appetite to visit our closest neighbor: Mars. Both President Trump and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk have said that landing humans on Mars is a priority for the U.S. But a number of daunting challenges stand in the way of this goal. At the core of Musk’s plan to reach Mars is Starship, the world’s largest and most powerful rocket ever built. In March, SpaceX conducted Starship's eighth test flight. While SpaceX was able to successfully retrieve the Super Heavy booster, the Starship spacecraft exploded, leaving a trail of debris in its wake and disrupting commercial flights. Meanwhile, NASA is aiming to return humans to the moon under its Artemis directive and use that as a stepping stone to future human missions to Mars. But Artemis has been hit with delays and cost overruns. CNBC visited the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah to get a behind-the-scenes look at what life on Mars could be like, and spoke to experts about what challenges remain to landing humans on the red planet. In an exclusive investigative documentary, End of the Road, CNBC reveals how criminal gangs operating from overseas are attacking America’s supply chain through cargo theft. The scheme involves deception and fraud against the brokers who arrange shipments and the carriers who move the loads. Cargo theft has surged to record levels with estimated annual losses topping $1 billion, and industry experts point to the explosion in these schemes where criminals impersonate, and steal, the identity of a company. At the same time, thieves are brazenly stealing from parked trucks, warehouses and trains. The most targeted goods are food and beverage followed by electronics. Federal legislation is pending that would set up a federal/state cargo theft task force, but in the meantime, the problem persists across the country with California the hot spot. As part of our investigation, we traveled around the country and will show the fraud happening in real time and talk by phone to one of the fraudsters. The U.S. has become a leading exporter of one popular cooking and heating gas, propane. However, America's position could be in jeopardy as the trade war with China rages on. China, Japan, and Mexico are frequent docking destinations for VLGCs, or very large gas carriers, filled with propane. The country's shores and pipelines saw 57 million barrels of propane leave in January of this year, according to the EIA. Around 14,000 ships transit the Panama Canal annually. The U.S. uses it more than any other nation with 40% of all U.S. container traffic, valued at $270 billion, traveling through the 50 mile stretch of water each year. But tensions in Panama are rising. President Trump claims China has “influence and control” over the canal and that threat represents a “violation of the treaty” between the U.S. and Panama. In March, an investment group led by U.S. firm BlackRock announced it was trying to purchase two ports at either end of the canal as well as about 40 others from Hong Kong based-CK Hutchison. CNBC Marathon explores how malls across the United States are evolving with the times. While many U.S. malls face anchor store closures and empty parking lots, some are finding new life by becoming housing. Real estate developers are building housing inside of or next to shopping malls as department stores like Macy’s, JCPenney and Sears shrink or cease to exist. At least 192 U.S. malls planned to add housing to their footprint as of January 2022. CNBC visited a Macerich housing project at Flatiron Crossing Mall in Broomfield, Colorado as well as the Arcade Mall in Providence, Rhode Island to find out what it is like to live inside a mall. U.S. adults make about 1.3 billion visits to shopping centers each month or about 62 trips per person annually, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. While some outlets, like malls, have struggled to retain shoppers, foot traffic to strip malls is booming. The U.S. has more than 68,000 strip malls from coast to coast, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. So how did the U.S. become covered in strip centers, and could the format be the future of brick-and-mortar retail? Despite a number of closures, U.S. malls are making a comeback, due in part to a surge in younger shoppers. Members of Generation Z, born between 1997-2012, are spending money in physical stores at a similar rate to their grandparents. Some of the top shopping destinations for Gen Zers include department stores like Macy’s, and JC Penney's, and specialty retailers like Express, Abercrombie and Apple. So can younger shoppers help save the traditional brick and mortar mall? CNBC went to Freehold Raceway Mall in New Jersey to find out. Foot traffic to suburban shopping malls has returned to pre-pandemic levels and high-end malls are thriving. Yelp found that 17 out of the top 25 brands driving consumers to malls are restaurants, and the dining options for visitors have moved well beyond the traditional food court that would include chains like McDonald's, Chipotle and Panda Express. CNBC visited the American Dream Mall in New Jersey to see how dining has evolved at the mall. CNBC Marathon explores how different restaurant chains like Chili's, Wingstop, and McDonald's are attracting customers back into their stores. Chili’s Grill and Bar is a casual dining chain that took America by storm in the early 2000s. From 2000-2008, its U.S. store count nearly doubled. But in the decade following the Great Recession, the nostalgic brand fell out of favor as sales grew stagnant and its store count declined. With the help of recent CEO, Kevin Hochman, parent company, Brinker International, has generated a record high $4.4 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2024. Watch the video to find out how the company has staged a comeback. Wingstop is capitalizing on the American appetite for chicken and providing investors with strong, consistent growth. In the past five years, the company’s share price is up over 250%, and it has grown its store footprint to 2,352 restaurants worldwide. The chicken-wing chain has expanded its offerings and continued to grow brand awareness. Watch the video to find out how Wingstop became one of the hottest restaurant stocks of the year. Your phone might be inundated with texts offering you a job these days. However, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says many of those job offers aren’t from legitimate companies - they are from scammers. Many people have already lost millions to these text job scams and the fraud, the FTC says, is on the rise. Consumers reported losing $14.8 million in 2023, a figure that jumped to $61.2 million in 2024. Some experts say people are more vulnerable to job scams during uncertain times like these, when a wave of job cuts draws widespread attention and recession fears make the economy feel increasingly unstable. The Trump administration launched a sweeping tariff strategy targeting countries with which the U.S. runs trade deficits. The White House's formula is being used to calculate new import duties, but some economists say it lacks credibility and does not reflect actual trade practices. Experts caution that the move could lead to retaliatory tariffs, disrupt global supply chains and threaten economic growth. The NCAA began allowing college athletes to transfer without having to red shirt, or "sit out" for a year without playing in October 2018. Since then, student athletes have taken full advantage of the transfer portal, and even sometimes transferring multiple times during their Division 1 college career. The new rule combined with allowing players to earn money in college, something called Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) has some who believe its a good thing and some who think college sports shouldn't be professionalized. CNBC's Sport and Media reporter, Alex Sherman breaks down the transfer portal's impact on March Madness. The U.S. government is poised to shake up global trade in April 2025. Tariff rate increases are scheduled to go into effect on imported goods from Canada, Mexico and China. In the early months of his 2nd term, President Trump has proposed several other tariff rate increases targeting specific industries like automakers and pharmaceutical companies. Some economists argue these new trade policies will be inflationary. Others say foreign countries will pay for them. Research from the Federal Reserve, shows that consumer prices may rise if businesses pass the increasing tax burden onto their consumers. But the central bank’s leaders are considering the full effects of the administration’s trade, immigration, regulatory and fiscal policies before adjusting monetary policy. Watch the video to find out if the new tariffs will be inflationary and what, if anything, the Federal Reserve will do about it. 1 How Apps Like Perplexity And Cursor Are Destroying The AI Wrapper Myth 39:25

Early in the AI race, apps like Perplexity, Cursor, Sesame and Abridge were known pejoratively as “wrappers,” describing the way their either app or business was wrapped around existing AI models. Critics called them as second-rate middlemen, slapping an interface on someone else’s technology while companies like OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic developed their own models. Now, that thesis is changing. Models are increasingly looking commoditized, narrowing the advantage that any model-builder had. While they focused on delivering raw capability and intelligence, app companies looked at real-world uses and solutions. Wrappers have even changed the way Silicon Valley builds, ushering in the era of vibe-coding. With an app like Anysphere’s Cursor, one of the fastest-growing startups ever, anyone can develop an app without a degree or years of coding expertise. The narrative and value is no longer dominated by the model builders — the apps have arrived. CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa has the story. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 00:58 Rise of the wrapper startup 5:20 Wrappers in the real world 9:31 Taking on the megacaps 13:01 What’s next for wrappers 14:54 Abridge CEO full interview Anchor: Deirdre Bosa Produced by: Jasmine Wu, Laura Batchelor, Drew Troast Edited by: Matt Soto Animation: Jason Reginato Senior Director of Video: Jeniece Pettitt Additional Editing by: John Lazration » Subscribe to CNBC: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered.
