In Season Two of her true crime series, The God Hook, journalist Carol Costello investigates the complex case of the Ohio Craigslist Killings—and in doing so, unearths the untold story of the crimes that preceded the murders—and the victims who’ve never received justice. Richard Beasley was convicted of murdering three men and attempting to kill a fourth in the fall of 2011, but before that heinous spree, authorities were building a human trafficking case against him. Now, working with the case's prosecutor, a county sheriff, and many closely involved sources, Carol examines previously unknown details of Beasley’s alleged crimes, and how he used the God Hook to lure his victims and bend them to his will. In Season One of this podcast, Blind Rage, journalist Carol Costello revisits the first big assignment she covered as a 22-year-old, novice reporter: Phyllis Cottles’ brutal attack. Psychologists call them “Triumphant Survivors,” but Phyllis Cottle was more than a survivor, she used this crime to better herself and the world around her. Hosted by Cooper Hird, the Hird It Here NBA Podcast acts as an outlet for a basketball fanatic learning the ins-and-outs of the NBA, mostly through the NBA Draft. As a full-time data analyst, I aim to bring a nuanced approach to the stats that modern sports rely upon, but the some fan struggle to contextualize. By translating analytics to plain English, and combining it with what we see on the court, I aim to help make the modern basketball fan (and analyst!) more capable of evaluating the game of basketball, where analytics are simply one tool at our disposal.

Adam Silver made some slightly surprising comments a couple weeks ago regarding the current state of the G League Ignite program, and prospect development overall. I go over some of the ramifications of his comments, and tried to fairly judge whether the G League Ignite program has been more or less successful at preparing its prospects for the NBA. I compare to situations like the NBL's Next Stars program, OTE, Prep School, and prospects like Darius Garland and Michael Porter Jr. who missed their year of college before going pro. Overall, do I think the G League Ignite is a failed program? No, I think that's too far. But I think it needs a reboot and a re-envisioning of what the end goal is, not just of the Ignite but the entire G League.…
Hey folks! Today I was lucky enough to have TWO phenomenal guests to talk about the San Antonio Spurs draft - Evan Townsend (@EvanTownsend_) and Mike Garcia (@CanyonDriver)! We mostly talked about Alamo City's other new Frenchman, Sidy Cissoko, as well as little time on Wembanyama, the Leonard Miller trade, and a couple minutes on Sir'Jabari Rice and the three Exhibit-10 players signed thus far (Charles Bediako, Seth Millner, and Logan Johnson). Thanks again to Mike and Evan for taking the time to record! Apologies in advance but I accidentally used my AirPods to record audio so there's a few glitchy spots, I tried to smooth it out so hopefully y'all still enjoy! You can also follow me on Twitter at @HirdItHereHoops!…
Hey folks - Evan Townsend (contributor to Project Spurs and kindly cult leader of Spurs Twitter Spaces) was kind enough to join me to talk about the future face of the Spurs franchise, Victor Wembanyama. We talked a little bit about guys like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Ralph Sampson, and Rik Smits as comparisons for the specific skills Wemby has flashed thus far, but mostly just talked about the greatness of the French fellow that is soon to be kicking it in Bexar County! I also wrote an article about Wemby and comparing parts of his game to certain uber-tall players in the past. Check it out here: https://hirditheresports.substack.com/p/is-there-anyone-like-victor-wembanyama Follow Evan on Twitter @EvanTownsend_ Follow me on Twitter @HirdItHereHoops…
The Twenty is a concept I stole from John Hollinger and his concept that approximately 20 players in a given NBA Draft will make a significant impact in the league. The goal of The Twenty is pretty simple - identify the 20 players eligible for the 2023 NBA Draft that I am most confident will contribute to winning in the league. Now less than 20 days from the draft, there's very little room for movement within The Twenty - who makes the penultimate cut?…

This obnoxiously long episode marks the long unawaited return of the Hird It Here Sports Podcast!! It's great to be back! This episode I ramble on about three big burning questions I have about Eastern Conference teams; this episode ran awfully long so I split it into just the teams I have projected to finish 10th - 15th in the East. If you value your time I do not recommend listening to this it is probably very bad but hey I had fun and that's what counts!…
What's up y'all! I recorded a podcast on the NBA's newest superstar, Zion Williamson, and what he has shown through his first 12 games in the NBA. I break down the strengths and weaknesses of Zion's current game, and look at a few of his best games, and as well as which teammates have fit best with him thus far. Hope y'all enjoy!…
What's up y'all! I recorded a podcast on the five(?) NBA caliber prospects on the Duke Blue Devils this year: Vernon Carey Matthew Hurt Tre Jones Cassius Stanley & Wendell Moore I went into detail on what each player's game looks like, some key stats for each guy, and a little insight into how I see each player's career going. I had the privilege of attending the Duke vs Clemson game where MY Tigers pulled off the upset, so I was able to get an in-person look at all of these guys (minus Wendell Moore.) As always, I hope y'all enjoy! Note: This episode was recorded this past Saturday, before the passing of Kobe Bryant, so the cheery tone of this podcast may be unsettling to some people. If so, I understand and apologize. I myself have struggled to consume basketball content recently, the wound is still a little too fresh. Welcome in everyone! Glad to have you back! This episode, I launch into a new (potential) series I have been thinking about for a while - a "What If?" series. The idea is to hit on some of the biggest decisions made in NBA history, i.e. free agency choices, draft selections, trades, even rule implementations by the league office. This episode, I wanted to explore the "What If" scenario that really prompted this concept over two years ago - what if Gordon Hayward hadn't signed with Boston? For this exercise, I decided not to simulate the injury Hayward suffered (I explain why at multiple points during the show) and instead imagined an alternate universe in which he had either stayed at home in Utah or gone to a different East Coast city - the Miami Heat. Welcome back y'all! In this fourth episode in a row covering the NBA trade market, I hit on a couple of the more difficult to decipher teams on the trade market - the New Orleans Pelicans, a team trying to plan the next decade around a player who has yet to step on the court, and the Denver Nuggets, who seem a trade tarket lurking under the radar. If you like what you hear, please leave a rating and/or a review, and be sure to subscribe for future episodes! Thanks again for tuning in! Welcome back y'all! In this third episode in a row covering the NBA trade market, I hit on a few of the biggest potential candidates to make significant, team-altering trades this season - namely the LA Lakers, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the LA Clippers. Welcome back y'all! In this second part of my initial NBA Trade Season series, I delve even deeper into the trade market that is beginning to open up this year, picking out a number of players I could see as potential trade pieces this season. In this episode, I ended up spending (too) much of the time on Philly, a team I believe is going to be very active on the market this year. While most of the podcast focused on the 6ers, I thought it was really helpful to go in-depth on them, as it established the population of possible trade pieces not just on the 6ers, but on other teams that could potentially trade with Philly. Again, this is a podcast stuffed with tangents and detours, so feel free to skip around - I had a ton of fun recording this way though, and plan to continue putting out more free-flowing podcasts with notes that allow me to tackle a specific topic if I feel inclined to do so. If you enjoyed, please leave a rating and/or review, and be sure to subscribe to keep up with future episodes! Thanks again!…
NBA Trade Season has officially begun! With the passing of December 15th a couple of weeks ago, NBA teams are now allowed to sign newly-acquired free agents from this past offseason. This date traditionally marks the opening of Trade SZN, which lasts until February 6th, prior to the All-Star game. In this first part, I discussed several of the teams I believe are unlikely or unwilling to make a significant trade this season, and then hit on the teams I considered "Actively Listening" on trade calls: Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, New York, Atlanta, Phoenix, and Minnesota. This show lasts about 80 minutes, with various different teams being touched upon. Feel free to skip ahead to the teams you wish to hear about the most!…
What's up y'all! After a brief hiatus, the Hird It Here podcast has returned! This episode was spent discussing the Christmas Day games - BOS vs TOR, MIL vs PHI, GSW vs HOU, LAL vs LAC, and unfortunately NOLA vs DEN. This was a particularly lengthy podcast, going a strong 90 minutes, but I do believe there were some worthwhile insights scattered throughout. Feel free to skip around as you see fit. As always, please subscribe to listen to future shows, and leave a rating and/or review if you enjoyed the episode!…
Hey y'all! This episode is on Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa who dislocated and fractured his hip after being tackled from behind in a game vs. Mississippi State. I discuss the play on which it happened, and bring on my dad, Dr. Barry Hird, to help go into further detail.
What's up everyone! Got a great episode for y'all today! Stone Hansen, who runs the mock draft at draftsite.com (and can be found on Twitter at @report_court) was kind enough to join me to discuss the 2020 draft, and his mock draft in particular. We recorded this on Friday (11/15), a day after the news broke that James Wiseman, #1 ranked recruit in the '19 HS class, will be sitting for Memphis going forward while NCAA investigations proceed. We discuss that whole saga, and then went over some of the guys in the top half of the first round of Stone's mock draft. Check it out, and I hope y'all enjoy! Remember to subscribe!…
What's up guys! We've got a great episode for you today, as we hit all around the NBA for some wide-ranging analysis! First I talk about the Charlotte Hornets loss to the New Orleans Hornets which I was able to attend in Charlotte; I gave some personal insight as well as some evaluation of on the floor performances. (13:45-40:45) Then I gloss over some of the big games from this weekend (40:45-59:10) Finally, I do a breakdown on 3 of the rookies from the 2019 class that have been pleasantly surprising thus far in their careers. (59:15-1:26:05) If you have any feedback let me know at my personal twitter page, @JoinTheHird, and be sure to subscribe to keep up with future Hird It Here episodes! Thanks again y'all for tuning in, and have a wonderful day!…
What's up y'all! I've got another great guest for y'all today - Adam Do of The Do Post (and a friend of mine from SBC '19) is making his second appearance to talk about his 4-1 hometown Lakers! We discuss the chemistry between AD and LeBron, the staunch Laker defense, how the rotation is playing out so far, and where we see this team after 82 games! Hope y'all enjoy this episode! If you do, be sure to subscribe for more! Stay tuned!…
Welcome back, y'all! I've got a phenomenal episode today! Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk with the lead expert on Clemson football at The Athletic, Grace Raynor! Grace writes frequently on Tigers football (several articles come out on The Athletic each week) and hosts The Athletic's official Clemson football podcast, Protect the Rock, alongside Nicole Auerbach! Grace is someone well-respected by her peers, and someone that players and coaches within Clemson always speak comfortably and rather candidly with, which speaks to her trustworthy nature. In this podcast, we talk about two of her most recent articles - one on Clemson's defensive line, the other a recap following the Boston College game. We hit on Brent Venables' intensity, Venables' alter ego who runs QB in practice, Tyler Davis, the secondary, Amari Rodgers - pretty much all of Clemson football. Grace was fantastic, and had so many insightful stories that I was either vaguely familiar with or had never even heard of before. It was a blessing to have her on, and I hope y'all enjoy the episode! Please be sure to share this episode with any Clemson or college football fans you think would be interested! I'm pretty confident in saying this was the best pod yet, and there's only better things to come! Thanks for tuning in y'all, take it easy!…
What's up everyone! Got another great episode of the Hird It Here Podcast for ya! This time, I'm talking about the new statement by the NCAA regarding future policies to allow players to legally receive some sort of benefit for their "name, image, and likeness." I dug into the release itself, as it contained a bulleted list of "guidelines and policies" the NCAA will use when structuring the rules and regulations of the future of amateur athletes. I then posed some of the biggest questions I had come up with both while reading and breaking down this article and while thinking about the possibility for the past few years. Overall, it appears that the biggest question is what the government decides to regulate and what it leaves to the NCAA to decide. Hope y'all enjoy the episode!…
It's not even sports this time! I did a podcast going over this week's episode of SNL, hosted by Chicago's own Chance the Rapper! Had a lot of fun doing so, hope y'all enjoy change in subject matter. Watch for an episode on the NCAA's release on monetizing player likeness tomorrow! If you enjoyed this episode, let me know! If you didn't, also let me know, but maybe in a smaller font!…
What's up everyone? In this second Clemson football podcast, I cover the game this weekend versus Boston College. I went over the induction of Levon Kirkland into the Clemson Ring of Honor, and dove into the game. Clemson won in a decisive fashion, scoring 59 and holding BC to a single touchdown. I focused predominantly on the offensive resurgence of the Tigers in this matchup, and give some key takeaways at the end. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to check out the next episode! Be sure to subscribe if you haven't already!…
We made it y'all! It's the opening week of the 2019-2020 NBA regular season! In this podcast, I recap the games this week (I recorded on Saturday, so games on Sat. are not covered - only Tuesday thru Friday) and go in-depth on the opening game of the week, the New Orleans Pelicans versus the Toronto Raptors! The Raptors won in OT, but it was a tight game throughout, and I was thoroughly impressed with both teams, though both still have clear questions to address as the season goes on. Hope y'all enjoy the show!…
Welcome Hird It Here listeners! Got a great episode on deck - this was recorded yesterday (Tuesday, Oct 22) so it does NOT cover the opening of the NBA regular season. Rather, I covered my alma mater Clemson as their football team took on the Louisville Cardinals this weekend; I went over that game, gave some key insights, and did a midseason review on my Tigers, determining which trends I expected and which have caught me off guard. Also, I took a few minutes to talk about the incredibly unfortunate Zion Williamson injury. Zion reportedly underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on Monday; I discuss the history of knee injuries with Zion and the possible ramifications for the future. As always, hope y'all enjoy the show! Thanks for listening!…
In this severely overdue interview with Mike Gribanov of The Stepien, we cover a variety of scouting related topics, ranging from assembling a big board, to how we watch and evaluate the game, to noting trends and exceptions to the trends. Mike was very insightful, pulling from his past few years as an analyst as an NBA draft expert to paint a picture of the scouting process. We also talk about Mike's career path, and how he eventually ended up in the basketball field. Mike is a phenomenal listen, and can be heard every week at The Stephien Draft Podcast, available on iTunes as well! Definitely check him and the rest of The Stepien out for the most in-depth, independently sourced NBA draft analysis on the web! Also, this podcast was recorded a few weeks ago, so if anything is inaccurate or outdated, I apologize. If you wish to reach out to me to appear on the show, to sponsor the show, or with any feedback or requests, reach out to me at chird@g.clemson.edu. I try not to use social media in general, and thus do not want to advertise Twitter as a prime way to contact me; as I get back into recording podcasts I'm sure my Twitter use will ramp up slightly, but if possible I want to remain off of Twitter and use email (or text) as my primary means of communication, even for the podcast. For now, please send me an email with any podcast inquiries.…
Welcome y’all to another episode of the Hird It Here Sports podcast! I was lucky enough to have Dave DuFour of The Athletic (and more!) to talk about his journey in basketball and some random questions I lobbed his way. We spent some time talking about his experience with coaching and player development first in South Korea and later in Germany, the first NBA draft we remember following as a fan, and a section where I spring the impossible question of attempting to answer who will make it into next year’s Conference Semifinals in each conference - the Final Four of each conference as I like to say. It really was a blessing to be able to have Dave on, we had met at the Sports Business Classroom this summer in Vegas, but for him to take the time out of his schedule to come on a little show like mine was truly a great deed, so thanks again to him for coming on. Make sure to leave a 5 star rating and/or a review if you enjoyed the show! Also be sure to subscribe if you haven’t done so already. Any feedback can be sent to @HirdItHere on Twitter, though I have recently started cutting down on distractions in my life, and thus will be on the site much less frequently. Again shoutout to Dave DuFour - subscribe to hear him on The Athletic if you haven’t already, he hosts his own podcast, Nerder She Wrote. Welcome y'all! In today's episode, I am joined by RaptorsRapture.com writer and occasional Nylon Calculus contributor, as well as fellow SBC '19 alum, Mike Bossetti! We talked about the Raptors last season, talked individual prospects on and added to the roster, and did some general forecasting of how we expect this Toronto team to turn out in the long run! As always, leave a rating and review if you enjoyed the show, and reach out to me at @HirdItHere if you have any feedback!…
Welcome back y’all! Dropping the third and final part of my ‘19 draft grades this Monday morning! I cover picks #21-30, meaning I finally get to lose my mind in a positive way over Brandon Clarke! What's up y'all! In today's episode, I went over the middle of the first round (picks 11-20) of the 2019 NBA Draft, and gave my grades for the value of each selection. Thanks for checking out another episode of the Hird It Here Sports Podcast! Had the pleasure of recording with someone I met at the 2019 Sports Business Classroom in Las Vegas this summer, as well as a follow podcast host - be sure to check out his show The Do Post! (link below) Adam has also been following the Lakers very closely as a fan the past few years, so I wanted to bring him on the show to talk about the Lakers - since the Lakers don't have much of a young core (anymore) we instead talked about the Lakers' offseason moves and how he saw the new look Lakers playing next season. We jumped around a lot, so didn’t include timestamps, but this was a fantastic conversation with Adam, and I hope y’all all enjoy! Recorded a Denver Nuggets Prospect Preview with fellow Sports Business Classroom '19 alumnus, Patrick Arsenault! Third episode of our NBA Prospect Preview podcast! This time, we bring on Lance Smith @LanceSmithTPC to talk about his beloved Golden State Warriors! We end up bouncing around and hitting several Warrior related topics, with most of the focus on D'Angelo Russell and Kevon Looney, but plenty of more content mixed in. I had a lot of fun on this one, and I think we did a really good job covering all the guys Warriors fans should be excited about going forward! Please leave a rating and/or review if you enjoyed, and if you've got any feedback feel free to reach out to me at the podcast's twitter @HirdItHere or my personal twitter @JoinTheHird Just as a note - I wasn't able to get the audio file into Audacity, so the editing and intro/outro was done in Anchor - unfortunately, there is no smooth jazz in this episode.
