We're back from an extended vacation, shaking off some rust and warming up for the season by talking about some stuff we missed while we were away. We make fun of Seattle's Draft Day and their failure to save Marc-Andre Fleury from becoming a villain once again. And we have some fun with the Flyers scheduled giveaways for the season while Brian questions Retro Fashion. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
The Flyers probably aren't worth watching anymore so we're gonna talk about what would make them better in the future. Questions about the coaching staff, goaltending, and who needs to be moved in the off-season fill this one up. It's hard to grit your teeth and sit through another season of patient front office guys, especially after Hextall, but that might be just what we're getting. In the long run, it may be okay. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
In this episode, we're talking about the Shayne Gostisbehere waiving, and seeing if some past criticisms of the coach still hold up with the FLyers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support
You can hear Ryne exasperatedly rubbing his temples while talking about the team in this one. There are so many things to complain about, which makes this team the same as it's been for far too long. We talk about the constantly changing lines, and the need to have at least one solid line that can stick together and regularly produce. The coaching decisions still feel bad, and Ryne has a point to make about the careers of past great goalies. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
It's the Bonus hockey Podcast! All the hockey podcasting you love but like a bit more of it. Every other week Aj, Ryne, and Brian are giving you a short update on Flyers news and other things happening around the League. This week: Are the Flyers good or not? The Flyers have rotated between looking bad and not great through this season, we don't have to worry about them beating bad teams anymore, but do we need to worry about them not being able to beat good teams? or the Bruins specifically. In a season full of weird lineup experiments, one seems to finally have ended as Sam Morin returns to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. A new experiment begins as Nolan Patrick moves to the wing, and AJ forgets to look up some fancy stats. Ron Hextall made his first move against the Flyers picking up his old draft pick Mark Freidman, and the dramatics between former teammates immediately started. Why were the Flyers going so hard against the former defenseman? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
That's right, two subtitles! We're talking about the betrayal of former Flyers GM Ron Hextall and the sudden increase in Sidney Crosby trade rumors and speculation. Ryne picks a former Penguin he'd like to help us get revenge. The Flyers were gifted a special event hockey game and half the team was put on COVID protocol a week before, forcing the coaches to make some odd lineup choices including moving more defensemen around the board. We make predictions for the game that will be obsolete within just a few hours. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Ryne gets mad at the league's use of points percentage to determine standings. The Flyers record is good, but they don't look good at all. In fact, they've looked so bad that Alain Vigneault decided to bench Travis Konecny to send a lesson to the underperformers. Aj misses a reference, we talk about the physicality of the lineup with Sam Morin on the wing. What it was expected to be and what it actually was. The Columbus Blue Jackets have a thing for driving away good players and Pierre Luc Dubois is the most recent consequence of whatever is going on there. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Travis Konecny's Hat Trick, Nolan Patrick's Revenge Tour, Jake Voracek's media slam, a two game sweep of the Penguins, it's been a busy first week in the return of Flyers hockey and we're breaking it all down for you in a shorty. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Author and hockey historian, Alan Bass visits the show to talk about his new book, Professional Hockey in Philadelphia: A History. We talk about the ways hockey fans have stayed the same over the years, Philadelphia's problems with keeping hockey arenas intact, and the hardest parts of digging up information on teams that existed so long ago. The Flyers are out so we're moving on and talking about Free Agency. We've also got an In Memoriam for the Flyers 2019-2020 season. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support
The Flyers have passed the first round of the playoffs for the first time in eight years, but we didn't know that yet during this episode. We talk about the power play struggles, goaltending, and what the series had looked like up to game five. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
The NHL playoffs are really, actually started now that the qualifying round and round-robin seeding are over. A couple of teams missing out on the playoffs has hockey fans and media reconsidering everything they have said about hockey for forever to make some confusing claims about the playoff format and star players. The Flyers continue to roll in the Toronto bubble, Rod Brind'Amour gets in trouble, and Connor McDavid might be boring, but that doesn't make him uninspiring. Also, the NHL playoffs aren't uninteresting just because Crosby and McDavid aren't in them. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Hockey is back and we're talking about the Flyers performance in an exhibition game and going over the Flyers nominees for end of season awards, way after the fact of them being announced. New Jersey Native and former ACHL/ECHL player Marc Straub joins us to talk about his experiences as a hockey player, his one-game call up to the AHL, and how he thinks players will be dealing with the season pause going into the playoffs. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
We're detailing a few more grudges we've picked up over the past week and talking about hockey before the hub cities. Aj's social media policies and the Penguins potential bullying issues. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support
The NHL has finally picked their hub cities and created the most amount of chaos possible with the draft. The Flyers are losing a few depth players. Gritty is having his charity run online and we're coming up with ways to make it interesting and more of a team effort. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
There are some hockey things happening so we decided to sit down and talk about them. Oskar Lindblom skates with his teammates and that has caused some discourse about the safety of the league and hockey players. There are also repeat incidents of beat writers claiming Lindblom's treatment is done before it actually is. Aj has a galaxy-brained idea for why multiple sports leagues are insisting on playing in infected hotbed areas, and Brian has an idea for filling a roster when a team is inevitably hit hard by the virus. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
The guys from Five Minute Major join us to talk about problematic hockey culture, the newest way hockey execs plan on bringing the sport back, and travel stories about Las Vegas when times were good. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support
The sports shutdown has quietly brought the second end of the XFL and made Wrestlemania even more entertaining in an eery, bizarre way. We do get to hockey eventually and try to predict which teams will surge after some time off and which ones won't be able to continue their success. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Are the Flyers doing enough social media things to keep up with the other Philly sports? Which players will be out TikTok entertainment? Isolation buddies, and the player's proposal to start the season late are in here too. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
What does a sports network wit no major sports look like? Well, we decided to create our own alternative sports that are (mostly) playable while social distancing. We get into potential Flyers Hall of Fame candidates and lose a bit off the back end. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
A shortage of sports has left us with a shortage of things to talk about. In this, kind-of-a-primer-for-the-rest-of-quarantine episode, we talk through some alternative sports and other bits of things --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support
On this special St Patrick’s day edition of The Beer League, we ask you what you'd do to get hockey back and try to name a five-goal game while trying out some new beer. The Selection: Flying Dog: Mint Condition (Mint Chocolate Stout, 7.2%) Flying Dog: Brewhouse Rarities Irish Coffee (Irish Coffee Stout, 6.6%) Flying Dog: Lucky S.O.B (Irish Style Red Ale 5.5%) Black Sheep Brewery: Monty Python's Holy Grail (Golden Ale 4%) --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
A day before the NHL decided to suspend the season, 4 idiots got together to talk about empty NHL arenas, fan contests to be the only fan watching a home game live, and the bright, exciting future of the Flyers season and very probable playoff run. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Bandwagon fans welcome aboard! Unless you're a radio personality, then you can screw off. The Flyers continue to win and of course, that's gonna get some people in the city interested in them. The more the merrier. We're talking about the GM meetings, the EBUG rule, the new offsides rule, and the return of the glow puck. The Hurricanes have a tough schedule, but it's not so much worse than the Flyers. Also, the team is melding on the ice and in the locker room, duh it's fun. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
We're taking the drinking aspect of our podcast and making a whole episode out of it. Beer tastings include: Guinness Open Gate Brewery: Stock Ale aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels, Guinness Open Gate Brewery: Over the Moon, Milk Stout, Yards Brewing Company: Big Hayes-y, Hazy Double IPA, Blake's Hard Cider Co: Triple Jam, Hard Cider with Blackberry, Strawberry, and Raspberry, and Almanac Beer Company, Peach Sournova, Peach Sour Ale aged in White Wine Barrels. Hayes has his own beer so we're thinking up player themed beers for other players on the Flyers roster. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
The Flyers are on a winning streak and climbing the Metro standings. There are two new faces on the Flyers roster and we're talking about what they add to the team. There's a few feel-good stories around the NHL this week including the Leafs getting embarrassed and fans being happy for Ottawa. But the NHL is trying to...avoid lawsuits? Make the fun moments less fun? It's unclear. The dignity of cheesesteaks is betrayed by a company inside Philadelphia and we're talking about the Flyers brand beers in the Happy Hour. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
The Flyers are rolling and climbing the Metro ladder. We can finally say that it's a possibility they'll get to first in the division, but will they? Does a playoff team need to make moves at the deadline, or do they know what they have? How about those Jeff Carter rumors? No? We're not gonna even make fun of it? There are a couple of hockey-related food deals if you wanna have a cheat day in the city, and we're watching women's hockey when it comes to the Flyers Skate Zone. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Fantasy hockey brings everyone together, best frenemies. Fitz and Ryne don't trust themselves to steer the episode in the right direction so they're letting Brian do it. Talking about the loss to the Devils and trying to feel better about it. Respecting the hell out of Sean Couturier. A scary moment for Jay Bouwmeester. Is Kevin Hayes gonna drink with us? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
Here's a question, is Alain Vigneault in consideration for coach of the year? Has he done enough, and what does he have to do to be considered? The way to get fans interested in the Flyers again might be Kevin Hayes' big personality, something that is lacking around hockey in general. There's always plenty of discourse about Shayne Gostisbehere, so why the hell not talk about his place in the lineup again? Gritty is innocent, but we didn't need the cops to tell us that. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
We've been doing episodes for a full year now! So we're gonna talk about the giant ravioli in St. Louis and decide if season ticket holders should step up and make hockey games more exciting for everyone. We're also talking about the Flyers. Trade rumors with the Senators from TSN have the Flyers looking for a rental center. The Flyers road record hasn't been great, but has it been that much worse than the Blue Jackets or the Hurricanes? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepigeoncoop/support…
