In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. The home stretch? The last mile? Or an extended absence? Only time will tell. We've had way too much fun for a couple of simple APEZ, and we've got to step away. This is Chapter 4 of APEisode 52 (playlist here ), and we're gonna call it a day for a bit. Officially we are on hiatus. But as we always do, we ramble on, so there's still hope. Thanks for riding along with us for this past year. Keep an eye on the website, we'll be dropping playlists, and posting whatever updates there may be. Please, be GOOD APEZ. The world is a crazy place, and our best hopez is to JUST BE NICE TO EACH OTHER! Party on, APEZ!…
CONTINUE THE MOJO WITH OUR FIRST EVER AUDIO CHALLENGES! It's a bit of rapid fire middle finger to the universe. We do You Should Know This Song with tiny little song clips. (Playlist here )Then the ongoing mix of challenges: STARTING LINEZ, TWIZT AND SHOUT, PRIME CUTZ, BEAN ENCHILADAZ, AZK AND YE SHALL DECIEVE, YOUR MOTHER SHOULD KNOW, and LOTS of UNC SUB. It's the 3rd chapter of the 52nd APEisode. YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS SONG! Come on, get on board!…
It's our ONE YEAR anniversary, and we are still talking and pushing the APEisode uphill. Chapter 2 Playlist is here ! With the new year we are celebrating our 52nd APEisode, and we're not done. It's a MIXED UPZ MIXED APEZ format. We are into Chapter 2 of this APEisode. All kinds of challenges with all kinds of artists, and our usual rants. Continue with us on this odyssey of the MIXED APEZ kind. FIGHT THE POWER! AND DON'T FORGET TO DONATE TO WIKIPEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
We made it to a year's worth of APEisodes. How about that SHI... stuff? We have lost our minds (Still? Again? Whatever!) and we are celebrating our 52nd APEisode by going even farther off the rails than usual. We've got some news, and we've got a load of folks to thank as well. And that includes ALL YOU APES out there!!!!! There's the thanks, then the inevitable Nestkeeping. And finally, we start the challenges. The APEisode is so long we had to break it up into 4 chapters. Each with their own playlist (Chapter #1 playlist here ). WE LOVE doing this, and we hope YOU do too. It's MIXED UPZ MIXED APEZ kind of thang, so the challenges are random, and of course, so's the chatter. There's a lot to cover here, so let's get started with the 1st chapter of APEisode 52! AND DONATE TO WIKIPEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
We're saying so long to 2024 in APEisode51 (playlist here ). And as my stepmom used to say, don't let the door hit ya in the backside on yer way out! We roll into (and out of) the APEisode with music from Wayne of APEZ and his project Architects of Umbra, with the tune Burning Sands. With no Nestkeeping, we start right into a RANT about Kid Charlemagne, and roll directly into another about MFSB, the Philadelphia creation made up of the areas best session players and the force behind a bunch of hits. All that before we get started on our regular inZanity. We get down to challenges with a segment of Ask and Ye Shall Deceive. Bowie is Afraid of Americans, Ryan Hamilton is avoiding his EXes, and Steve Earl's mother is PO'd about the Devil's Right Hand. And that's not even half the stuff we cover in the segment. We move on with a round of TwiZt & Shout. We've got lyrics from The Waitresses, Bill Hailey, Marvin Gaye, STP, and all the alternate universe Christmas tunes Reid could find. He can't help but be an APEZ! As usual there's lots of factoids and info on the music and the artists. And, we're both just as goofy as we've been all year. So let's go, jump on the sleigh as it leaves 2024 behind and let's get APEisode 51 on the road!…
Welcome, and come help us celebrate APEisode #50 (grab the playlist here ) of THE Lyric Challenge Podcast, YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS SONG! It's the holiday season, and while we don't need a reason to go crazy, hittin' 50 is as good an excuse as any! After the usual ZANITY (I just made up a word there), of the intro and our traditional NESTkeeping, we jump into a PRIME CUTZ segment. There are clues and references to Otis Redding, Trooper, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes just to start off. We continue with The Tubes, Deep Purple, 10CC, and a bunch more. AND,,,, REID of APEZ comes out with an EPIC RANT on Steve Lukather and the loss of true Studio Musicians. Honestly, it's well thought out AND thought provoking. Imagine that from an APEZ! After a quick tribute to the Champagne of BOTTLED beer, we jump right into a Quick HitZ segment. Artists include Riff Raff (the alien, not the rapper!) BOC, the Clash, John Prine and still more. We're all over the place here! We're letting it ALL hang out for APEisode #50. Jump on in, the beer is COLD and we're gettin' OLD. Let's GO!…

WELCOME (BACK if it applies) to the pageantry, the celebration, the festival, the meandering that is YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS SONG! This time we're gonna brave the question "who is the father of heavy metal guitar?" We're not answering it, but more talking about it and passing it along to you. So get into the discussion! The playlist for this APEisode can be found HERE ! Mike of APEZ suggested to Rayce of APEZ a now and again sharing of a new album. Awww, look at them sharing. Anyway, cool idea! Hey Kidz! Here we are again, for what seems like the 42nd time. Oddly enough, it IS the 42nd time. How can you you miss us if we won't go away? This APEisode is a no challenge zone. That's right, this one has all the calories, none of the challenges. Rayce gets going on a couple of topics, and he just won't shut up. After some much needed Nestkeeping, we discuss some OUTSTANDING numbers that just seem unbelievable. We cover a few covers. And then we find a sneaky way to get some instrumentals on the playlist available here . All this and more on APEisode 42 of THE Lyric Challenge Podcast, YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS SONG now!…
With all respect to John Sebastian and "Gabe Kotter" we're saying 'Welcome Back'. We were recording outdoors 'Late in the Evening', just poddin' along, when a sudden and totally unexpected rainstorm hit us. After a little natural panic, we hustled the equipment indoors with (thankfully) no damage, and we finished up inside. We appreciate your understanding if the sound environment changed, but we managed to finish up with little impact to the APEisode. Find the playlist for this week's mayhem here . We start off with some Nestkeeping, re-iterating that Little Richard IS the King of Rock & Roll, and it seems even the big 'E' himself agreed. 'Nuff said. We jump into a FULL Episode of Prime Cutz. We begin with lyric challenges from Santana, The Cult, The Clash, and Rage. Then we had to change venues due to the sudden storm. When we regroup inside, we are able to continue with clues for songs by The Psychedelic Furs, REO, The Kinks, the Thin White Duke, and more. We survived the weather, and we'd love to have you join us for the adventure. Listen to APEisode 41 of THE Lyric Challenge Podcast, YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS SONG now!…
