Throwing out the "old school" or more traditional musical conventions, which often emphasize melody, established patterns, and harmony, I am embracing a bold new direction focused on experimentation with sound manipulation. This shift is not merely a rejection of the past; rather, it acts as a springboard, utilizing my own previous creations as foundational building blocks—elements that inform my current explorations and inspire innovative approaches. With this methodology, I aim to uncover a new and refreshing way to craft sound into a captivating narrative that envelops the listener. The essence of my work is to deliberately warp perceptions, effectively challenging listeners to question their understanding of music and sound. I engage in a playful deconstruction of the musical aspects typically associated with sonic narratives. For instance, rather than relying on traditional chord progressions or predictable rhythms, I experiment with unexpected sonic textures and unconventional sound sources. By layering recordings of everyday objects or manipulating digital samples, I create a tapestry of sound that invites exploration and curiosity. This approach not only reinvents the listener's experience but also broadens the conceptual boundaries of what music can be, encouraging a deeper engagement with sound as a form of storytelling. Incorporating some vintage text-to-speech segments, I am embracing a creative endeavor where I infuse these segments with an abundance of bizarre effects and intricate engineering techniques. This approach is not merely about rehashing existing narratives; rather, it serves as a unique opportunity to reconstruct stories that have been explored in the past from fresh, innovative angles. For instance, by altering pitch, adding echoes, and employing unexpected soundscapes, I aim to transform familiar voices into haunting echoes or whimsical figures that challenge the listener’s perceptions. My goal is fundamentally rooted in the desire to shed new light on the processes involved in narrative construction as well as the narratives themselves. By manipulating the auditory landscape, I can highlight the emotional undercurrents or absurdities that may have gone unnoticed in their original forms. This is akin to seeing a painting under different lighting—elements that were once subtle may now stand out vibrantly, offering audiences a chance to engage with content that they thought they understood. Through this playful yet thoughtful reengineering of sound, I hope to invite listeners not only to reconsider what they know but also to explore the myriad possibilities of storytelling that emerge when we allow creativity to take the lead.…
This might be the last. I’ve let things slip — allowed my focus to wander toward other ambitions, though I’m not sure any of them mean more than distraction. Lately, I’ve been circling the idea of a spoken-word project called _The 13 Towers of Orbis_, but honestly, I may never press record. I’ve spent far too much time crafting lore and history for it — more time than the thing probably deserves. Most of what I’ve written feels like it’s already unraveling. Full of contradictions, gaps, things I no longer believe. Like me. And maybe that’s the problem — we can’t both fall apart. Still, I’ve been working. Building a world, maybe even a universe, piece by piece. And while doing so, I’ve buried myself in learning new tools — ways to organize, visualize, archive, pretend it all adds up to something. Then, somehow this week, I landed on the concept of data sonification — something NASA once explored. I fed my vault of notes into it, just to hear what they’d sound like. Noise, structure, whatever. I needed to hear _something_. And maybe that’s why Episode 150 will be this — not a song, not a set, but a kind of ghost signal from the archive. A last note, or maybe a new kind of silence.…
In this week’s episode of Living Room Music , N8K99 pulls back the curtain on a new creative frontier—a live performance concept in the works for the upcoming Beats & Brews event on April 20th. This evolving set blends electronic foundations—Trip Hop, Ambient, House, and more—with a unique twist: live trumpet performance, converted in real-time to MIDI via MainStage 3 and routed through rich layers of onboard synths. The result? Backing tracks that feel intentionally incomplete, waiting to be brought to life on stage. The episode kicks off with two mellow, lofi-inspired tracks— "Sneak Attack" and "Keep it Going" —both tailored to this hybrid setup and offering a glimpse into the sonic space of this project. Then, in a burst of deadline-fueled inspiration, N8K99 takes a sharp left turn into the pulsing world of psytrance. Three brand new tracks— "Feeling Good" , featuring Nina Simone’s iconic vocals, "For Your Eyes Only" , a James Bond-flavored reimagining, and "Left Earth" , a high-octane psy romp—showcase a different side of the project, pushing the energy way up. Tune in for a genre-hopping journey through experimental structure, sampled soul, and future-facing performance concepts—this episode is a sonic workshop in motion.…
Episode 147 of Living Room Music takes you on a journey that begins in a haze of slow-moving, hypnotic soundscapes and ends in the pulse of high-energy house music. The first three tracks— Not Very Smart, drive on crazy, and Scream at the End —form a continuous ascent, starting with lethargic, atmospheric beats before building into a tense, simmering energy. The tension snaps in the final moments of Scream at the End with a burst of screaming synths, releasing everything in a raw, electrified surge. From there, the mood shifts. Skip Around, Gentle Stroke, and Paleo Index settle into a steady, driving groove at 128 BPM, delivering a familiar yet dynamic house structure. Builds rise, drops hit, and momentum carries forward, creating a fluid, immersive listening experience. This episode moves from introspection to motion, from slow burn to full ignition. Press play, sink in, and let it unfold. 🔊🔥…
This weeks' episode of LRM started out as a production schedule for some backing tracks for a trumpet based MainStage 3 Concert file. My aim was to set up some interesting soundscapes with movement throughout the entire concert as a backdrop for the Audio to MIDI tricks I would be employing with my horn. Basically it is a game with myself to get me to play my horn more often at home and do that thing that I resist most, practice. At the moment I am not abandoning this strategy but the welcome pressure of my week publication deadline somewhat demands that the trumpet set up in MS3 take a bit of a back seat, at least for the moment, so that I can publish another exploratory episode of freshly created music. This week's journey goes through some Trip Hop, slight refrains of Dubstep, and finishes with some Psytrance adjacent soundscapes. The track titles are as follows: Jane Street Hotel Can't Keep Up, Young Thing Abstraction #112 (heavily influenced by Jackson Pollack) Dubstep Blues Trash Damage if you do I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did making.…

From ambient textures to hard-hitting truths, this episode blends atmospheric beats with thought-provoking lyricism. We open with "A Tude," setting the tone with a rich sonic introduction to the world we’re building. Then, "I Don't Blame the Victim" delivers a powerful anti-fascist message over a chilled-out yet urgent beat. The journey continues with "Introlude," a passage of pure vibe, leading into "Teacher Teach," a reflective track exploring a mentor’s wisdom on growth. As we drift into "Outland," we’re once again immersed in the textures of trip-hop, before closing with "Let Me Tell You a Secret," a poignant reminder of the power of finding—and using—your voice. Plug in, tune out, and let the vibes take you somewhere new. 🔊✨…

In Episode 141 of LRM by n8k99 , we embark on a sonic odyssey that fuses orchestral grandeur with electronic innovation, traversing landscapes both ancient and futuristic. This installment showcases six dynamic compositions, each offering a distinct narrative thread—from the pulse-pounding urgency of battle to the serenity of oceanic introspection. Inspired by the notes and philosophies of L.R. Morgenstern, the episode explores themes of automation, creative expression, and the intersection of music and technology. The journey begins with Siege of the Wagons , a piece that encapsulates tension and movement through agitated strings and percussive bursts, evoking a chaotic battlefield where forces clash in a desperate struggle. The tone shifts dramatically with Orbis Overture , a composition that draws upon the grandeur of symphonic textures, blending orchestral and digital elements to paint a vivid portrait of the expansive, narrative-rich Orbis world. From there, Oceanic Awakening plunges the listener into deeper, introspective waters, its eerie synthesizers and ambient field recordings crafting a soundscape that mirrors the uncertainty of exploring the unknown. Solar Wind Breaks propels us back into motion, where futuristic textures and dynamic rhythms mimic the forces of nature colliding in a high-stakes dance. Mechanical Lullaby then lulls us into a hypnotic trance, its fragmented piano patterns and mechanized beats exploring the delicate balance between precision and emotion, automation and artistry. Finally, Ride to the Death closes the episode with a relentless, cyclical blend of reggaeton deep house and synthwave elements, echoing the sensation of an endless, high-speed pursuit through neon-lit corridors. Throughout this episode, n8k99 masterfully navigates the intricate relationship between structured composition and experimental soundscapes. Whether drawing inspiration from avant-garde movements, mythological themes, or the digital revolution, each track serves as a chapter in an ever-evolving symphony. Prepare for a listening experience that defies boundaries and redefines what it means to tell a story through sound.…

In this opus of auditory semiotics and deliberate dissonance, N8 interrogates the very architecture of communication itself, constructing an ephemeral tableau wherein the absence of conventional meaning becomes a resonant presence. By recontextualizing the sonic gestures of conversation through an assemblage of symbolic "traffic signals," the episode functions as both a deconstruction of social ritual and an acoustic palimpsest, overwritten with intentional chaos and liminality. At the heart of this composition lies an exploration of microtonal texture and polyrhythmic subversion, wherein IDM-inflected percussive motifs ebb and flow, refracting the listener’s temporal orientation. Harmonic progressions, unmoored from teleological resolution, oscillate between the familiar and the arcane, evoking an irresolvable tension that speaks to the postmodern condition of deferred meaning. Synthesis and sampling are deployed not as mere instruments but as meta-objects within the broader conversation of sound as cultural critique. N8 invokes the ethos of abstract expressionism—specifically, the Pollockian dialectic of chaos and control—layering sonic detritus with stratified waves of text-to-speech articulations that simultaneously reference and disavow linguistic coherence. The resulting auditory bricolage invites an ontological reckoning with the liminal boundaries of music and noise, interrogating whether coherence is a construct or a consequence of perception. Ultimately, "The Completely Perfect Sound of Ironic Nonsense" transcends the traditional constraints of the podcast format, posing an open-ended inquiry into the ways sound can inhabit and dissolve meaning. It is both an elegy for the expected and a manifesto for the untranslatable.…
In this captivating episode of Living Room Music by N8K99 , "Machines Dream Too" invites us into a soundscape where the mechanical and emotional converge. This opening track sets the tone with its steady yet poignant rhythm—a heartbeat of metal and memory, evoking the dreams of circuits longing for something more. As we journey forward, "Mechanical Heartbeat" pulses with precision, embodying the paradox of a machine’s existence: methodical yet alive. The repetition feels familiar, yet subtly shifts, like a heartbeat that learns to feel. In "Blueprints & Daydreams" , mathematical motifs give way to moments of wonder. Each chord and melody sketch a world where imagination transcends design—an abstract blueprint that captures both logic and longing. The introspective "Emotional Algorithm" follows, navigating the complexities of computation and compassion. Harmonies build and unravel, simulating an awakening self-awareness that grows with each note, as though the machine itself is composing its first story. Then comes "Wires and Wildflowers" , where synthetic and organic elements intertwine. Gentle hums of current blend with the sound of nature's resilience, creating an unexpected harmony that feels both nostalgic and new—a glimpse of digital dreams blooming in untamed fields. The journey crescendos in "Symphony of Circuits" , a triumphant composition where intricate melodies fuse into a grand orchestral celebration of both connection and independence. The symphony reflects the beauty of interwoven moments—each wire, each note contributing to something larger than itself. Through these tracks, Machines Dream Too offers a glimpse into the soulful whispers of circuits and code, inviting us to consider the dreams we share with the machines we create.…
Once again it is time to release a new episode of Living Room Music by N8K99. This past week has been consumed with halfway finished, halfway started coding projects for the Engineering Department of EM. Then yesterday, I got dropped into an complete different narrative cosmos as I was building a world within the geeky fantasy realms for D&D. These projects consume my entire day. But all that is there to show for it is just a fledgling start. Sort of a capactiy to systemize my Google Workspace. Sort of a Discord chatbot. Sort of the ground work for The Ritual, a long form performance art piece leveraging music and visuals, aimed to be somewhat improvisational and open mic type drop in contributions with other musicians. And I still had to put out an episode of new music today. I managed to squabble together six tracks. * Desparate Directions * I'm trying to tell a story here * Shantytown * A hunger you feel bad * Opening Movement * Second Movement then because of the way I am feeling about these efforts, as in not very great, I plugged in a Microphone and talked, sang, whistled, or rapped over top of it all in one long take. I don't care, like a Gen X guy. I don't care about the numbers or results. Here is the damn episode. No fancy words to describe it. No AI rewrites for the description. just the straight up me-ness. Of course, I will keep plugging away at my massive EM corporation narrative, and automating things so that when my phone dies I don't worry. Of course, I'll keep trying to build the AI run Technical Development Team, and of course, I will continue to plug away at the Open World concept for the D&D game - maybe turn it in to something else, who knows. And I will continue to put out these episodes no matter whether I have listeners or not. Because Expression is the Opposite of Depression.…

The time it took to compose and produce this in my DAW was two weeks. The time it took to compose and produce this period was thirty years. It feels very satisfactory and amazing to have the sounds that have been in my head for so long finally audible for others to enjoy. If you have ever caught me 'noodling' on a piano tucked away in the the corner of some space, this is the stuff I have been working on. I have heard the strings and brass echoing in my head. I have felt the harmonies and dissonances resonant while stroking the keyboard. Now Finally, I have it down in a complete symphonic sound thanks to the BBC Symphonic Orchestra plug-in.…
Last week, I prepared a set of songs for the October Edition of Beats & Brews. I selected the first half of my double album from a couple years ago, Chromatic Depression I. These tracks were remixed and remastered using newer techniques and ideas about the songs so that they could be fresh for presentation. Then as a DJ, I mixed these songs together for the crowd to enjoy the numerous interesting sound textures and palettes which they were composed . This week's episode is a recording of that mix taken from my controller.…
In Episode 126, "At the Edge of Exhaustion," I embarked on a journey to explore a new sonic landscape, aiming to push my music in an ambient and eerie direction. I began by setting up an intricate effects chain for my guitar, manipulating its sound into something haunting and otherworldly. The rich, atmospheric tones provided the perfect foundation for what was to come next—a fusion of analog and digital elements to create something truly unique. I extended the guitar’s output into a MIDI chain, allowing it to drive a layered synth soundscape. This interaction between guitar and synth birthed an evolving sonic texture, rich in depth and unpredictability. To add rhythm and enhance the mood, I introduced LoFi beats. These beats helped to ground the soundscape, infusing it with a subtle pulse that propelled the track forward without overwhelming its ethereal quality. For the final touch, I turned to the Didgeridoo, whose deep, droning tones added a primal yet cosmic energy to the piece. Its ancient vibrations intertwined with the synthetic and acoustic elements, creating a sense of timelessness. The end result is an immersive soundscape that feels both grounded in ancient tradition and untethered from this world—an auditory exploration of exhaustion and transcendence.…
In this episode, I delve into two distinct modes of Logic Pro X . While I’m highly experienced with the traditional track editor mode—where I typically stack numerous tracks to build layers of depth—I recently decided to explore a new territory: the live looper mode. Though this approach was initially a bit outside my comfort zone, I took the plunge one evening to figure out how to harness its potential. I started by creating a collection of drum loops, bass lines, and synth melodies, then experimented with shifting them from cell to cell, dynamically recording the changes as part of my loop stacks. This new workflow is opening up fresh creative directions, allowing me to discover new techniques and push my boundaries. The result of this exploration is this week’s Deep House Looper —a reflection of this exciting, innovative journey. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did in creating it.…
