In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement. It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction. Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly. We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently. These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us. The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us. Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication. Hey, it’s me - T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement - things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more. We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America. I'm excited to welcome Kelly Greene back to the podcast today and continue the conversation from the last episode! Today, we're talking about finding meaning in the mess and how purpose fuels resistance. Kelly and I also discuss the vast, transcendent emotion of awe and how this gives you something powerful to focus on outside of yourself. From learning about holistic resilience to finding meaning in the mess and purpose, both of these episodes with Kelly were incredibly inspiring. I know they will be helpful for you and whatever you're navigating in your life! In this episode, we cover: Why finding meaning and purpose in your life is VITAL Resilience vs. post-traumatic growth Realizing that you WILL experience trauma in some way, but cultivating resilience will help you to come out stronger on the other side Finding meaning and purpose when you have a chronic illness The complex emotion that is awe Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! I'm excited to welcome my friend, Kelly Greene, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, onto the podcast today! In today's part 1 episode, we're discussing holistic resilience and what rethinking strength and survival looks like. Kelly has experienced her fair share of trauma over the years and has often been told how resilient she is. While she may look like it on paper, resilient was not a word she would have used to describe herself years ago. Make sure to come back for part 2 with Kelly next week as we dive more into resilience - you won't want to miss it! In this episode, we cover: Kelly's "dark night of the soul" experience that led her to step away from practicing law and take a holistic approach to her life How holistic resilience has impacted Kelly + the work she does with her clients Why resilience does NOT equal grit 2 extreme ways that people typically react after experiencing a traumatic event Where resilience actually happens for us The Healthy 4 Hs + 8 factors that can help with building holistic resilience Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, we're talking about why we stay and the pull of the familiar, even when it hurts. As humans, we find comfort in familiarity. Our brains are wired for survival, and we LIKE what's comfortable and safe, even when it's actually the opposite of that. The pull of the familiar is SO strong, but it's not unbreakable. With curiosity, bravery, and support, it's totally possible to step out of what's comfortable and into something better. Change can be scary, friend, but this is also where growth happens (believe me - I know this ALL too well). If you need help in this area, I'm here for you, and I would be honored to walk alongside you on this journey! In today's episode, Tom and I are talking about how we've navigated expectations in ranch life and marriage. We've learned that unspoken expectations are resentments waiting to happen. If you're going to have an expectation about XYZ, you've got to speak it - not everyone is going to have the same expectation or understand where you're coming from! We hope this episode gives you a more REAL insight into how we've navigated expectations in ranch life and marriage. We've both done the inner work on our own (as well as together); it takes time to get there, but it's absolutely worth it. Remember - speaking expectations are so, SO important. People aren't mind readers, and they can't meet expectations they don't know exist! In this episode, we cover: Tom’s experience with having high, unspoken expectations of others + how that’s changed What to consider if your expectations are consistently NOT being met The correlation between feeling safe & effectively communicating your expectations Making sure that YOU’RE in the right place mentally in order to help others Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, I'm talking about cleaning the shop and why feeling your feelings gets worse before it gets better. Many of us have been little hoardy hoarders with our feelings for years. When you finally decide it's time to start the process of working through your emotions, not only are you feeling your emotions in the moment, but you're also unpacking YEARS of emotions! Feeling your feelings is NOT easy - especially if it's something you've never done before. Fortunately, the clarity and peace you find on the other side will be SO worth it. I've experienced this in my own life, and I know it's possible for you, too! In this episode, I cover: What happens when you stop feeling your feelings + what it’s like when you DO Starting small when processing your emotions vs. tackling them all at once How to ground yourself as you work through this process What it feels like when you finally process your feelings & emotions in the moment How you can support others who are just starting this process Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! I'm honored to welcome a special guest, former Marine Jake Ogren, onto the podcast today! Jake is a husband, dad, and former Marine who chose to serve after 9/11 happened. After doing multiple tours in 12 years, he left the U.S. Marine Corps and has been shoeing horses for 10 years now. He's a good friend of ours and our horse's farrier, and since I've known him, we've had MANY conversations surrounding the topics of mental health, trauma, and taking care of ourselves. Basically, we're solving all of the world's problems in the horse barn! In today's episode, we're talking about what it looks like to go from toughen up to open up. Jake and I discuss the very well-known stigma in the ranching and ag space that is "toughen up and rub some dirt on it," as well as getting personalized support for YOUR mental health needs. In this episode, we cover: Jake's journey of joining the Marines Corps + what eventually led him to seek therapy for his mental health The all-too-common stigma of "toughen up and rub some dirt on it" in the ranching & ag community The importance of getting support for YOUR specific mental health needs + finding the right person to talk to Jake's advice for seeking help when you're hesitant to do so How therapy has impacted Jake in multiple areas of his life Common misconceptions about mental health in rural America Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Healthy boundaries are essential for protecting ourselves and our relationships, but unhealthy boundaries can isolate us and keep us from facing reality. I talked about why boundaries can be one of the kindest things we do for ourselves in episode 36 (you can listen here if you haven't or if you need a refresher). In today's episode, I'm talking about the process of maintaining your fences and the art of healthy boundaries. My favorite analogy to use in regard to boundaries is fences. We have a variety of fences we use on the ranch, and they all serve a different purpose. You have to be intentional about how you build and maintain boundaries so they truly serve you and your relationships well! In today's episode, I'm talking about what happens when pain finds you and a bit of a personal update on growth, healing, and hope. I was given news that no one EVER wants to hear when it comes to their health. As I'm currently walking through this new and unfamiliar situation, I can't help but think of how vital it is to process our emotions. When we choose to process (or, more often, NOT process) our emotions, this ultimately impacts our health. We can't suppress our emotions over and over again and expect our health not to take a toll in the long run! "Pain isn't a bug; it's a feature." I first heard this quote from grief expert David Kessler on the Dr. John Deloney Show (give it a listen HERE if you want to check it out). This particular phrase hit me, and it really stuck with me. In today's episode, I'm talking about the gift of pain and why we should stop ignoring it. Pain is not an anomaly - it's not meant to be shoved down or something we need to fix. Pain draws our attention to something so we can learn what's going on; it's an invitation for us to grow because it shows us what needs more focus and attention! In this episode, I cover: Changing how we view pain and its purpose for us What can happen when we ignore pain and the signals it sends us My experience with a major pain point in my own life Practical ways to engage with pain Getting curious on where pain is showing up in your life Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, Tom and I are talking about what burnout on the ranch looks like and how we're learning to recover faster. This fall was tougher than usual, and it seemed to drag on and on - we both felt that way throughout the season! We're also chatting about winter projects we're focusing on and what Tom's experience with burnout has been like. Burnout is incredibly real in this line of work, but it doesn't have to be your reality forever. If you've been in a similar season with burnout on the ranch and are ready for recovery, or you're simply looking forward to a slower time of year like we are, we hope this episode encourages you right where you need it! In this episode, we cover: The process of shuffling herds on the ranch + putting more woe back into the cows Why what we think we need to do to slow down or stop cattle ends up being the opposite of that Our upcoming winter projects What burnout on the ranch has typically looked like for Tom + how we've worked together when certain projects weren't going well this fall Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! As someone who grew up in rural America (and is still there), I'm very familiar with the mindset that comes along with this way of life. We're raised to keep our emotions to ourselves, work hard, and push through, no matter WHAT. Talking about our feelings and emotions is unnecessary and makes us look weak. In today's episode, I'm talking about breaking the stigma and what redefining strength in rural communities looks like. We can take simple steps toward breaking this stigma and start focusing on supporting our mental health and well-being and building resilient communities with thriving families. In this episode, I cover: The typical mindset that’s often ingrained in us in rural America What happens when we bottle up our emotions and ignore our mental well-being The collective resolution I want us to make in the new year Simple ways for us to begin breaking the stigma together Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today’s episode, I want to share the hard truth about emotions because, well, you gotta feel them ALL. When it comes to emotions, we must understand that they themselves are not the problem, but rather, our resistance to actually feeling them is. If you’re someone who is used to numbing certain emotions, I really want you to get curious as to WHY you’re doing so. Instead of numbing, take time to recognize, feel, and accept your emotion(s). Then, you can get ready to bring joy and happiness into your life in a BOLD, new way! In today's episode, I'm talking about extending grace without accepting behavior. It's a universal truth that everyone has a reason for their actions - there is ALWAYS a why behind a behavior. Even when we don't know the whole truth (and we may never), we can choose to extend more grace. My challenge for you is to look for that story that you might have missed. Even if you can't find it, please know that there IS a story you don't know completely. After all, grace doesn't cost us that much, so let's start extending more of it today! In this episode, I cover: The concept of "we don't know what we don't know" and choosing to give a little more grace Understanding that everyone has a reason for their actions and there's always more to the story Why extending grace does NOT mean that you accept or condone behavior Why grace matters and its vital connection to emotions How we can extend more grace to others Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, we're discussing what "Relationship before Horsemanship" really looks like with Warwick Schiller and how this applies to ALL beings (not just horses). We also discuss what unraveling and shattering long-held truths can look like, the importance of validation in all of our interactions, why extending grace to animals seems to come easier for us than to our fellow humans, and much more. In this episode, we cover: A pivotal experience that led to Warwick’s focus on relationship before horsemanship How working with horses started Warwick’s journey of unraveling and the role his podcast plays in showing the unraveling of our cultural and societal conditionings Ways to support horses with nervous system regulation using connection and how this applies to people, too How we are in charge of creating our own reality and how we choose to interact with any type of being (human or animal) Why it seems easier for us to extend grace to our animals rather than to our fellow humans The concept of waiting vs. doing when working with horses and why the nervous system isn’t meant to be calm all the time Why attachment and attunement are what humans need most but are also most lacking Connect with Warwick: Follow on Instagram and Facebook Check out his YouTube Listen to The Journey on Podcast Check out his website and online video library Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Recently, my son and I were out riding. He was fascinated with wild onions and even got off his horse to pick some! I was quick to tell him that we were burning daylight and we needed to get back to work. But as kids, mindfulness allows us to see things in a new light and believe in the possibility of change, and it's time that we find our way back to that! In today's episode, I'm talking about reclaiming mindfulness and what it can look like when you're burning daylight or missing the moment. We'll explore how children's innate awareness can inspire our own mindfulness practice, how we can foster that in our kids, and some simple steps to reconnect with the present moment as adults. In this episode, I cover: How kids are naturally mindful, curious, and present in the moment (and how this gradually changes as we become adults) Why we lose awareness and mindfulness as adults, and how this impacts our kids Ways to reclaim our awareness and mindfulness as adults How we can foster awareness and mindfulness in our kids Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, I'm talking about navigating responsibility in relationships. These 'fences' in relationships represent important pieces like boundaries, emotional well-being, and the overall health of the relationship. Just like on the ranch, knowing whose side of the fence an issue is on brings clarity, prevents confusion, and may even help prevent future conflict. When we know what we're responsible for (like fixing our own emotional fences or recognizing that someone else has work to do on their side), we can navigate our relationships with more grace, patience, and understanding! In this episode, I cover: The importance of having clear & established agreements in both your real-life fences + the ‘fences’ in your relationships Understanding that sometimes the issue is clearly yours to fix, and other times it is the other person’s Signs that it’s not your responsibility/something that’s on your side of the fence Ways to help you determine whose side of the fence an issue is on + what to do when it IS on the other person’s side Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, I'm talking about the "treat yo self to maintain yourself" concept and what a new take on self-care can look like. Self-care is about meeting your basic needs and caring for the whole self - mind, body, and soul. Each of these parts needs optimal attention so you can show up fully in every aspect of your life. I hope this episode provides you with a new take on self-care because you don't need permission to take care of yourself. Guess who’s back on the podcast with me today?? If you guessed Tom... you nailed it! We’re talking about something that’s been on Tom’s mind for a while, and that is a formula-like a ‘plug the variables into your equation and get a solution’ type of formula. In today’s episode, we talk about why ‘feel’ matters more than formulas. This is applicable from grazing to relationships and everything in between. Whether you’re working with cattle or another type of animal, or you’re working to improve your human relationships, there is no ‘special’ formula to make it work. It’s important to understand that you do need to find your ‘feel’; this is going to vary with each person, as well as with the animal or human you’re connecting with. In this episode, we cover: Understanding that there’s no exact ‘formula’ for handling & moving cattle + how this applies to human relationships, too What it can look like as your goals and priorities change over time How you actually develop the ‘feel’ with both animals and humans Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Today’s episode is inspired by a book that I recently finished reading, ‘The Principles of Training’ by Warwick Schiller . He has 12 different principles about training your horse, but they’re actually applicable across the board - just like good movement! The specific training we’re discussing today is what it looks like to create a tool before you need to use it. In today’s episode, I talk about creating the tools before you need them and how to go about building emotional resilience and communication. Similar to horses, humans need to create tools that will lead to effective communication and emotional regulation. Essentially, we need to have these tools established BEFORE we use them. In this episode, I cover: The importance of asking honest questions + why we first need to do this when the stakes are ‘low’ Why breathing is a powerful tool to help us regulate our nervous systems in stressful situations + simple techniques to try Taking a deliberate, intentional pause before responding in a high-stress, high-emotion situation How body awareness and grounding can help during tense and ‘heated’ moments Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! We’re talking about one of the hardest times to practice validation in this episode - during tough conversations. Yep...I’m talking about those heated moments where emotions run high, and it’s so easy for things to quickly go sideways. Choosing to acknowledge both our emotions + the other person’s can be super beneficial. Not only does this decrease the ‘power’ these emotions tend to have over us, but it also lets the other person know we understand them, and they matter. I want to challenge you to try one (or a few) of these validation strategies the next time you find yourself in a tense situation (or better yet...maybe practice BEFORE the situation arises). I hope you’ve enjoyed this series, and everything you’ve learned about validation will be helpful in your own life! In this episode, I cover: Understanding that high stakes equals high emotions + how this plays out in our day-to-day rural lives How to stay ‘grounded’ during heated moments Why acknowledging everyone’s emotions during tough, heated moments matters The power that comes from using neutral, calm language The importance of balancing validation with setting boundaries Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Validation is a key piece in building stronger relationships and communicating more effectively. This is especially true in rural life, where emotions tend to go unspoken. In last week’s episode, I discussed what validation is and why it’s important. Today, I’m excited to continue the conversation surrounding validation, and share more about the ‘practical’ side of it. In today’s episode, I talk about practical tips for validation, and specifically, how to validate and seek it in relationships. Validation is not about ‘fixing’ problems or offering solutions, but rather, seeing, hearing, and trying to understand each other. Not only can we offer validation without fully understanding or agreeing with one another, but we can validate ourselves too. After all...that is where the REAL connection begins. In this episode, I cover: Effective ways to validate others How to seek validation for ourselves Why validation is much more than just ‘fixing problems’ + a special challenge for you Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today’s episode, I talk about validation vs. agreement, and why understanding the difference matters. Validation is the process of acknowledging and recognizing someone's feelings, thoughts, or experiences as legitimate and REAL. Even if you don’t agree with or understand the other person, it’s important that they feel seen. This then fosters trust, connection, and emotional safety, which is incredibly important AND powerful. Validation can truly be a key tool to break through emotional and miscommunication barriers; it’s an effective way of saying ‘I see you, I hear you, and what you’re feeling matters’. Today’s episode is coming to you from a cute little Airbnb at a women’s ag event in Utah! I originally planned to record a different topic before coming here, but...plans changed, and so did my mind after speaking here. I was asked to speak on the topic of building strong relationships on cattle operations through communication, which you may know by now is right up my alley! I love doing workshop-style presentations and answering questions from other people. One of the common themes that kept coming up was how to communicate in faster-paced, intense environments (like you would encounter in the sort alley), so I wanted to give you my best suggestions on how to do so. In this episode, I cover: Choosing not to communicate in the heat of the moment unless you have your emotions regulated and in check Ask honest questions so you can gain knowledge and find a way forward to help the other person(s) involved + yourself Validating others and their feelings and why ‘soft’ doesn’t mean weak How to get other people on board with improving communication and drawing good movement and why it’s a ‘slow burn’ Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! It’s been a bit since Tom has been with us, but he’s back on the podcast today! We thought it would be fun to do a little summer ‘recap’ episode, since summer is officially coming to a close. In today’s episode, we talk about anxiety and string fence, and more of what’s been happening in our lives recently. Tom dealt with the aftermath of a tornado, and has spent a lot of time branding and string fencing. He even had his first encounter with what we think was anxiety, regarding weaning cows. The weaning process has very much been a learning experience for us over the years, and we’ve definitely adjusted what has worked well (and not so well). In this episode, we cover: Branding and string fencing + Tom’s recent (and first) experience with anxiety Preparation for weaning the cows and calves + how this has gone for us in the past Our epic kayaking adventure + the pride and excitement we felt for our kids showing at the fair Resources & Links: Join the waitlist for the Good Movement Collective Good Movement music by: Aaron Espe Podcast produced by: Jill Carr Podcasting Connect with Terryn: Follow on Instagram @terryn.drieling Check out my website Send me an email at terryn@terryndrieling.com Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Today’s episode is inspired by some recent events (which is typically my MO here anyway) - community and connection. I’ve heard (more times than I can count) the saying that is ‘it’s my burden to bear’ or ‘it’s my cross to carry’, when someone is struggling. Maybe you didn’t know this (or maybe it’s just a helpful reminder), but we are NOT meant to bear our crosses alone! We literally need connection to help us along in life. In today’s episode, I talk about what it means to ‘team lift your life’, and the importance of connection and sharing struggles. We’re supposed to ‘team lift’ and help each other when life gets hard! In this episode, I cover: Understanding that we are NOT meant to struggle and ‘bear our crosses’ alone Why you need to reach out to your people and community when you’re experiencing life’s challenges Resources & Links: Join the waitlist for the Good Movement Collective Good Movement music by: Aaron Espe Podcast produced by: Jill Carr Podcasting Connect with Terryn: Follow on Instagram @terryn.drieling Check out my website Send me an email at terryn@terryndrieling.com Related Episode: Episode 40 | Knowing When to Set a Boundary with Sheila Hansen Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! I’m honored to have my incredible friend, Dannel Wissler, on the podcast today! Dannel is a farm wife and mom to 4, and she also had a deep desire to become a licensed counselor. As a licensed professional counselor, Dannel helps people address a wide variety of emotional needs and challenges. In today’s conversation, Dannel and I delve into cultivating resilience, fighting well, and the crucial role that mental health has on family dynamics in rural America. Dannel loves working with many different types of clients, from couples and families to first responders, and even those in the ag space. People in agriculture are incredibly strong and resilient (which is something to be proud of). But...the stigma that’s associated with this space often leads us to believe that it’s weak (or even unnecessary) to ask for help when we’re struggling with our mental health. We aren’t meant to suffer in our own little ‘silo’ that we’ve created; feeling like we need to hide our shortcomings and woundings from everyone but our families (who usually see the ‘uglier’ parts of us) isn’t something we can do forever either! It’s vital that we stay anchored in the present, while getting help so we can successfully move forward, and ultimately, thrive. In this episode, we cover: Dannel’s inspirational journey of pursuing her dreams, while still being a present wife and mom The entrepreneurial ‘push’ that led Dannel to start Willow Oaks Counseling + the wide variety of clients she supports Multiple barriers affecting the ag community + why it’s necessary to ‘break the stigma’ when you’re struggling and need support with your mental health How Dannel’s role in both agriculture and counseling have influenced each other, and every part of her life Dannel’s book, Saving Mr. Toad Resources & Links: Join the waitlist for the Good Movement Collective Good Movement music by: Aaron Espe Podcast produced by: Jill Carr Podcasting Connect with Dannel: Check out her website Send her an email at dwissler@willowoakscounseling.com Get a copy of Dannel’s book, Saving Mr. Toad Connect with Terryn: Follow on Instagram @terryn.drieling Check out my website Send me an email at terryn@faithfamilyandbeef.com Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been really bothered about our lack of ‘why’ - like, why are we just assuming we already know #allthethings, and not being more curious about what’s going on around us? Just like with a car that’s not running properly, it’s important to get to the root of the issue and actually fix what’s wrong, instead of letting it go until it stops running all together. In today’s episode, I talk about where is the ‘why’; we must understand that if we don’t choose to ask questions and dig into things deeper (instead of ‘playing it safe’ at the surface level), we won’t really be able to resolve anything. The lack of ‘why’ has become more of a significant issue for me after consuming one of Dr. Gabor Matè’s books, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts (linked below), all about addiction. This book really changed the game for me and has led me to become hyper aware of common behaviors, issues, etc. in our society. ALL of our problems come from some type of wounding; in order to actually repair and heal what’s happened, we should be pursuing actual solutions, not slapping on band-aids to simply cover up the problem! In this episode, I cover: Understanding that if we don’t choose to ask questions or dig deeper into something, we won’t be able to truly resolve it What totally changed my viewpoint on our lack of ‘why’ + the hyperawareness I now have regarding many behaviors and issues in the world Realizing that ALL problems come from woundings that haven’t healed + why we’re going to completely miss what we’re seeing if we don’t stop and ask ‘why’ Resources & Links: In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts Join the waitlist for the Good Movement Collective Good Movement music by: Aaron Espe Podcast produced by: Jill Carr Podcasting Connect with Terryn: Follow on Instagram @terryn.drieling Check out my website Send me an email at terryn@terryndrieling.com Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! I’ve been talking a lot about attachment and attunement, and how these two pieces have dramatically impacted my parenting journey. In a recent episode, I discussed what I would do differently if I could do parenting all over again. In today’s episode, I want to talk about how attachment and attunement have transformed my parenting, and what I actually AM doing differently, knowing what I know now. In this episode, I cover: How I’m now ‘feeling my feelings’, and actually acknowledging my emotions + why I’m encouraging my kids to do the same Why I’m choosing to hug my kids when they’re experiencing really strong emotions, instead of adding fuel to the fire by getting angry myself Being willing to work on our confidence and asking for support when we get frustrated Resources & Links: Join the waitlist for the Good Movement Collective Good Movement music by: Aaron Espe Podcast produced by: Jill Carr Podcasting Connect with Terryn: Follow on Instagram @terryn.drieling Check out my website Send me an email at terryn@terryndrieling.com Related Episodes: Episode 42: What I Would Do Differently in Parenting if I Had It to Do Over Again Episode 38: Attachment and Attunement - What Do Those Words Even Mean?
