Welcome Tracy Barbosa , a local glass artist. She is the owner-operator at Duende Studio and a Community Development TDI Fellow Attleboro at MassDevelopment . Tracy is a multi-media artist and community organizer. She has a bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design . (AKA MassArt) Tracy was involved with organizing the Love the Ave initiative in New Bedford’s North End. Her artwork is in private and public collections all over the world. Tracy Barbosa began working with glass in 1997 at MassArt in Boston. Shortly after she began working at John Lewis Glass assisting with glass projects such as the OK City Memorial in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and at One World Trade (One World Trade Center) in New York. Her most recent work, "Equinox," is an integrated glass elevator tower that will be featured at the New Bedford MBTA South Coast Rail Station , Barbosa is dedicated to designing unique and inspiring environments for public transit users. Welcome to the Lost Artists of Fairhaven Podcast Series hosted by Scott Bishop ! The series focuses on the artists who once lived, worked, or were born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts . The town was and continues to be called home to many now-historical artists who were forgotten or unsung in their day. This focused series of podcast episodes presented by The Artists Index brings you informative conversations with historians, family members, friends, or acquaintances who once contributed to Fairhaven as Visual, Performing, Literary, or Culinary Artists as well as the supporters, and cultural impresarios of this remarkable corner of the South Coast’s creative community. Scott speaks with The Millicent Library 's director, Kyle DeCicco Carey * about Lillian Allen Dexter . She was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on August 29, 1871. She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1889. From there, she then went on to study at the Cooper Union School in New York City, where she earned a certificate in Pen and Ink Illustration from the school’s Women’s Art Department in 1893. During the 1890s, Dexter traveled to various locations between Massachusetts, New York, and West Virginia visiting, parks and Civil War battlefields, where she sketched flowers and other botanicals. In the late 1890s, she lived in Washington, D.C., with her uncle, the clerk of the US Senate Finance Committee. While there she worked for the American Rose Company , creating commercial art. After leaving Washington, Dexter settled in Marion, Massachusetts where she remained until her passing on July 13, 1928. The Artists Index is an AHA! partner and this is the March AHA! episode in our continuing series of livestream podcasts from Play Arcade co-hosted by our livestream partner and friend Adam Katz. Welcome Diane Conlon , AKA Diane Arlene Conlon, a Swain School of Design alum from Newport, Rhode Island. Graduating from Swain in 1980, she attended S.M.U. – Southeastern Massachusetts University , today the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in pursuit of a Master of Arts in Education. After a year there, she left the program. In 1989 she was among 20 other Swain alumni founding members of Gallery X and was elected their Secretary. Then, in 1994, she moved to Brooklyn to work on her MFA at Brooklyn Colleg e and graduated in 1996. Diane stayed in New York City and worked as an Art Specialist for a Catholic elementary school in Queens until she retired in 2009. She then moved back to Rhode Island and taught drawing at the Newport Art Museum . She has continued her pursuit of the Arts and Education. Diane has many books on American history and decided to create a collection of American art books. It is reflected in her work and what she feels is meaningful and beautiful. Welcome Milt Brightman to this special episode. Milt , who was our guest on Podcast Episode 17 , speaks about his late friend, Swain School of Design classmate, and fellow artist, the late Eric Hart . Eric was the very first person Milt met when he attended the Swain School of Design . They attended their first class in the sculpture building behind the Rodman House - the William Rotch Rodman Mansion - in 1972 . In this podcast, Milt Brightman relates how he, "approached the front of the building... I saw stacks of boxes, which turned out to be clay, and a male student with long flowing blond hair. I asked him what’s going on and he said, 'help me move these boxes inside'. After we had done so and the class started and ended, I thought I had someone in this sea of strangers to talk to, but he just ignored my approach and moved away to the next class." Milt continues, "The way we ended up as friends was through a third party, Dave Peloquin , who found out I liked sword and sorcery art work and started talking to me. As it turned out, he and Eric Hart were rooming together. On my many visits to their apartment, that, by the way was filled with Swain students in other apartments inside the same building. Eric warmed up to me eventually but had a stronger bond to Dave at the time. I believe it was in our sophomore year that Dave , who was a very good artist in his own right, had to drop out of Swain due to personal reasons. From that point on, it was just me and Eric working together." "In our Junior and Senior years we shared a studio together in the Melville (Building) and our bond grew much stronger. Many times we abandoned our classmates on landscape painting excursions and went off on our own to paint. Yes, we got some flack for that but we were young and arrogant and making the progress in our work that we hoped to make, so we continued along in the same way all the way to graduation." "When Eric left, we made the usual promises that people make to stay in touch, but in our case we did, through letter writing and I begain to make excursions to Connecticuit (where Eric moved to) on a yearly basis. Eric also came back to Massachusetts on occasion and we always, had painting as our connection. We drank and spoke of old times, but that was after day long excursions into the landscape to paint in oils, watercolors and drawings. Our friendship lasted right to the end when he passed away, and I will never forget him. Every time I start to draw or paint he is always there with me, and will be so always." Welcome, Kevin Grant , a Fairhaven performer and the son of an art teacher and a biology teacher who studied piano as a child. As a teenager, Kevin also had some vocal training through various local theater productions. While at Boston University , he studied English and Eastern Philosophy. Kevin Grant works professionally as a supply chain specialist. He enjoys cooking, reading, skateboarding, sledding, and hiking in the White Mountains . His other likes include hurricanes, blizzards, cats, and boxing. Kevin and his wife, Lauren, have two children, Meaghan and Jack as well as two cats named Harry and Squeaker and one deceased fish, Stanley (“Stan the Man”). Kevin's favorite bands include those he has played in and others such as The Brain Dead Geniuses , Cereal Toys , Merrick , GASKILL , Expose Human Sharks , The Hidden , The Judo Heirs , Iron Oak , Blackhouse , and WIRE LINES . He has occasionally performed with The Northern Skulls . In Episode Four, our Gallery X Documentation Project podcast host Sean FitzGerald speaks with Christine Maiato FitzGerald , his wife, and the Gallery X Documentation Project's master scanner! Christine , who is also an artist, was our guest on Podcast Episode 88 . She has scanned the varied contents of the Gallery X archives, folders, and file boxes dating from 1990 to 2008 (18 years), including over 100 news articles, nearly 200 exhibition posters, and many postcards, pamphlets, programs, newsletters, and booklets. But wait, there's more! Christine has also scanned dozens of miscellaneous advertisements, awards, certificates, and other items. Her efforts and dedication while scanning Gallery X‘s entire collection of documents spanning 34 years. The documents include news clippings, posters, flyers, photographs, and more. Once scanned, these records, including the remaining 17 years (2009-2025) will be archived and mined for information specific to the artists who have exhibited their work or performed at New Bedford’s oldest continually operating cooperative art gallery. They will be included in The Artists Index searchable database project. The gallery was founded in 1990 and is a contemporary, cooperative art gallery of visual, performing, and literary artist members and volunteers. Gallery X has served as an incubator for emerging artists and is a venue for established artists. It is a platform for local artists, performers, and creatives of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds to showcase their talents as an integral part of the South Coast‘s community. This eight-episode podcast series supports and documents the overall project and provides historical and background information about the gallery and the progress made to date. In Episode Two, Gallery X Documentation Project podcast host Sean FitzGerald speaks with Susan and Charles Hauck . Charles, or Chuck , as he is better known, was one of our earliest podcast guests. Susan/Sue/Suzy Hauck is married to Chuck. Chuck, who is originally from Toledo, Ohio studied sculpture and received his BFA from the Swain School of Design . Sue is a self-taught artist. She has often worked in the decorative arts fields in various capacities. She also served as the Administrative Director of Gallery X for over a decade. The Artists Index is an AHA! partner and this is the sixth in our series of livestream podcasts. The November AHA! was our second impromptu evening and open mic invitation to the South Coast's poets to help celebrate with us on Thursday, November 14th, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Once again, our livestream podcast was co-hosted by our livestream partner and friend Adam Katz , the owner of Play Arcade. Our November AHA! Guests who joined us (Max Wikermayer and Ron Fortier ) in the bar area at Play Arcade included Kate Frazer Rego. She was our podcast guest on Episode 83 and Episode 147 . Kate also read a couple of her poems. It was the first live poetry reading on our AHA! podcasts! We also had an impromptu and very refreshing visit from Taber Academy students Ryan O’Donald and Hudson Flynn, who told us about their experiences in pottery class at Taber. These articulate young men encouraged two of their fellow students, Blake Appleton and Matty Levesque to join us. Their art instructors, Tricia Smith and Leslie Brannigan, joined in soon after. They offered their views on the local art scene, the Taber art curricula and the importance of the phenomenal creative community of New Bedford and the South Coast . Once again, it was loud and noisy with all the arcade games but we still had great conversation. In Episode Five, Dave Reis speaks with internationally renowned, award-winning jazz musician Greg Abate , a saxophonist, flutist, and composer. He's traveled the globe on his musical tours. After finishing his education at Berklee College Of Music in the mid-70s, Greg Abate went on to play lead alto saxophone for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. Abate formed his group Channel One in 1978. It became a New England favorite and offered him an opportunity to play tenor sax from 1986-87 with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under the leadership of Dick Johnson . He was recently ranked number three in the Downbeat reader's poll for alto sax. The Artist Index's jazz documentarian and Jazz Podcast Series host, Dave Reis , spent nearly 26 years as a Jazz radio show host, among his many other accomplishments. He was one of the original longtime DJs who worked at the former WUSM which became radio station WUMD , 89.3 FM, on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Dave Reis , AKA David Domingo Reis, began as our guest on In-Focus Podcast 154. and In-Focus Podcast 181 . He returns once again as the host of our first-ever ten-part jazz podcast series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center .
