Oversharing Nomads Ruin Travel Do oversharing nomads ruin travel? These days it seems like all the travel highlights have been detailed by oversharing nomads. Details in Oversharing-Nomads-Ruin-Travel-Bob Davis Podcast 1158. Opportunity Certainly the world is full of opportunities for Discovery and Exploration. Nomad Life And I discuss these subjects in relation to nomad life. Documenting Experience However recently I have noticed almost every place and experience has already been documented with a pin in a map… So everyone else can have the same experience. Freedom By all means we have the freedom to experience and enjoy where we go in our own way. Overshare Nevertheless one of the pitfalls of the so called #nomadlife ‘movement’ is a tendency to overshare …. Lecture And as a matter of fact lecture everyone else about where to go and what to do. Road Tramps Even more with people who learned nomad life a certain way from certain people… They are generally apt to pull right up next to a vehicle and force themselves on other campers. On one hand this behavior is based on the idea we’re all brothers and sisters in this effort. Manners and Boundaries On the other hand this behavior shows a pronounced lack of manners and boundaries. Accordingly it is not unusual to find yourself listening to a whirlwind travelogue with ‘pointers’ on where to go and what to do. How Do You Define Adventure? With this in mind one wonders when adventure, discovery and exploration happens… Ticking Boxes If all we do is tick boxes on a list from someone else. Amazing And Incredible In fact my sense is social media and modern technology have made the practice of telling everyone else about ‘amazing’ and ‘incredible’ places very common. Leave Something To Discover In the final analysis we should be leaving something to discover for the new travelers. Not That Hard In addition these same people stress that Nomad life is extremely complex and difficult. In summary it’s not that hard. Sooner or later we all discover the world is a big place and there’s a lot to see. Maybe some experiences are still pristine. Keep It To Yourself If you find one…Keep it to yourself. Life at an Off Grid BLM Camp near Yuma is an acquired taste. Details in Off-Grid-Yuma-BLM-Bob Davis Podcast 1157 . Firstly I have been traveling and camping at some spectacular National Forest campgrounds, And National Parks. Even more at some amazing Bureau Of Land Management campgrounds which are well maintained and fantastic. But the so called Long Term Visitor Areas are a different story. Certainly my listeners and subscribers have followed my tribulations through the LTVA experience in Quartzsite, Arizona. Above all Yuma isn’t much better. By the same token the vibe in at Yuma is a little more chill than a hundred miles to the North in Quartzsite. Basically I ran into some first time RV people; the other day and they expressed their displeasure with these LTVA’s run by the Department of The Interior. Overall this is a great place to wait out the final few weeks of what we call cold weather down here. In fact with temperatures in the 80’s as I write… It won’t be long until I start spring travel into the higher elevations. Undoubtedly first time RV people have their concerns. It’s important to realize that these places have no power or water hook ups. Nevertheless there is garbage service and fresh water. In the same fashion bathrooms are provided. Unfortunately sometimes they don’t work. Another point overlooked is the BLM isn’t very good at fixing things… Or cleaning things up. In contrast to nearby military bases with five bars of 5G…the US Department of the Interior cannot seem to figure out how to get cell service into these LTVA’s. On the other hand once you accept all those drawbacks life can be pleasant here. Secondly one of the things about this environment is it tends to be more social. All things considered I am changing my requirements when it comes to camping. In fact these days I prefer more solitude and emptiness. For that reason I will generally avoid these kinds of places. For the time being though this is a good place to wait out the final few cold nights and plan for future travel. On this occasion one takes the good with the bad. Nomad Winter Escape Adventure Firstly time for a Nomad Winter Escape Adventure. Details in Nomad-Winter-Escape-Adventure-Bob Davis Podcast-1156. Winter Break Up North Secondly right about now just about everyone in North America is looking for a winter break. Polar Vortex Certainly the arrival of the Polar Vortex and Winter Storms are key. Cold In The West Too In addition even out west it’s cold in the higher elevations. Nomads Equally important is the need for nomads for warm days and nights. Challenged Accordingly the adventure here is the often challenged nomad migration from the higher altitudes to the lower. Life On The Road Of course because life on the road requires multiple stops in transit it becomes an adventure. Eastern Sierra Thirdly I love the Eastern Sierras. Spring and Fall However this locale is a lot more palatable in the Spring and Fall. Lone Pine To Organ Pipe Since I just made the trip from Lone Pine California to Organ Pipe National Monument in Arizona I can tell the story. All things considered I was warmer in the below sea level reaches of Death Valley. But I don’t like to back track. San Diego It’s for this reason that I headed toward San Diego. Owing to the fact that I had video to upload I was in search of a Starbucks and a place to hole up for a night while I uploaded. In reality apparently San Diego doesn’t like Truck Stops or National Forests. And, like Florida, this part of the California frowns on stays in Walmart parking lots, Cracker Barrel’s, or Denny’s. All things considered any nomad out there is nodding their head. In the final analysis I do not blame the San Diego area. Rest Area At the same time the best I could do was a rest area about forty miles east of the city. At length let the downloading begin! Campground Finally found a great campground a little farther east. Santa Ana Winds At length I found the nights still too cold with the Santa Ana winds and headed for Arizona. Mundane Adventure With this in mind Nomad-Winter-Escape-Adventure-Bob Davis Podcast-1156 is all about the little errands and things we have to do that makes nomad life an adventure sometimes. In any case any refugee from the current Polar Vortex will find California and Arizona quite pleasant despite slightly cool evenings. Organ Pipe Dream And Organ Pipe National Monument is a dream. Adventure Freedom History Adventure, Freedom and History in Death Valley and The Eastern Sierras .There’s so much to see and so many thoughts! Details in Adventure-Freedom-History-Bob Davis Podcast 1155. Death Valley Eastern Sierras Firstly my last podcast dealt with the Eastern part of Death Valley . Podcast 1155 deals with the Western Part of Death Valley and the Eastern Sierras. Freezing In Lone Pine California Secondly I am doing this podcast as I exit the freezing northern reaches of Lone Pine California and head for warmer parts of Southern California. Most importantly heavy winds and near freezing temperatures make it pretty cold up in the mountains. Pioneers That is to say given the elements I don’t know how the pioneers even considered trekking up the Sierras with their belongings and animals. Donner Party Certainly the Donner Party experience led to later western emigrants to seek a southern route. Death Valley Days This literally led through Death Valley. History Altogether I love the history in the west. Western History But the Death Valley Sierra area is jam packed with all kinds of historical stories. Beauty Even more every view is packed with beauty. Heading South With this in mind while I retreat to warmer climes I am doing this podcast in Mobile Podcast Command as I head south. Freedom Above all this is a great time to discuss issues of freedom. At the present time I am struck by the number of people I know who feel deeply constrained in their jobs, Pressure Even more life seems also to be exerting a tremendous weight on shoulders ‘back in the world’. Nomad All things considered I think this is one of the reasons people are so interested in nomad life. 2025 High Vibe In Death Valley It’s time for a higher vibe to ring in the New Year and Death Valley is the place to do it. Details in 2025-High-Vibe-Death-Valley-Bob Davis Podcast 1154. Staying To The Maximum I came here to stay one or two nights and ended up extending to the maximum time. As a matter of fact I could live here if they let me. What a contrast to the Truck Stops of Las Vegas. Especially the stars. Largest National Park Of course this is the largest National Park in the Lower 48. Surprise But at the holiday time of year I was surprised by the number of people camping up here. Primitive Man Certainly it’s true that our end of year rituals rooted in primitive man. So it’s fair to suggest Christmas and New Year’s celebrations precede the Christian Era. And our commercial hustle and bustle suggests a return to pagan roots for some. Camping For Christmas and New Years But I am still surprised at the number of people camping here for Christmas and New Years. Primitive Roots Accordingly this place has a lot of primitive history. With this in mind the ghosts of Ancients , American Indians and Pioneers have a certain currency . Ghosts As well as the miners and entrepreneurs that built some of the best attractions in the Park as well as in the region around it. History Up to the present time this place has a lot of history. Gratitude Furthermore as a nomad I am grateful for the ability to enjoy places like this at length. Vibe The first thing to remember is the vibe in the campgrounds is high. Campfire Firstly every night there is a lot of talk around the campfire of where people camped and what they saw that day. Crush Of Holiday Activities Back Home Secondly and chiefly a huge relief and respite from the shopping and food and family intensity of Thanksgiving through the New Year. Winter Solstice Meanwhile the Winter Solstice is supposed to be for resting and refitting. In addition for preparing our seeds to be planted in Spring. In summary Death Valley is a special place with a lot of life! Hella Truck Stop Nation It’s a Hella Truck Stop Nation. In this case “Hella” is used in the negative sense. Get the full scoop in Hella-Truck-Stop-Nation-Bob Davis Podcast 1153. Las Vegas Firstly I am supposed to be enjoying a perfect Southwestern sunset in front of a warm campfire. Instead I am in Las Vegas waiting for a heater I’ve ordered to arrive at Camping World . And dealing with a strange noise and potential mechanical problem with Mobile Podcast Command. Therefore I am rotating around Las Vegas. Truck Stops From time to time visiting various truck stops both in the city and in surrounding areas along the freeway. Long Time Traveler More importantly I have been doing this for a long time. That is to say traveling around the country visiting towns and cities. Certainly spending most of my time on the back roads and avoiding the major cities. Shiny Hotels Of Las Vegas All things considered when most people come to Las Vegas they come to the shining hotels. In essence to gamble, enjoy an expensive and delicious dinner and see a show. Miss The Back Streets Under those circumstances visitors never see the back streets of this city. Desperation In particular the in town truck stops. At the present time I don’t think I have seen this many desperate people. And not just here in Las Vegas. But all over the Southwest. Fool No One To explain we’re talking about people sleeping in cars and converted vans and utility trucks that fool no one. Or the free campgrounds in the desert. Digging A Little Deeper This Time Therefore I certainly could have recorded a breezy and fun podcasts about how much I love truck stops. On the other hand I decided to dig a little deeper and push a little harder. Haves And Have Nots There’s nothing like a trip to Vegas to emphasize the gap between the haves and the have nots, The Abyss As well as the unfortunates who have fallen off the last rung of the economic ladder…into the abyss. And sure there’s jobs for those with certain skills. And of course there are those who I describe as useless. Sharecroppers Thirdly about 90 years ago hundreds of thousands of Oklahoma Sharecroppers headed west. Grapes of Wrath For the purposes of illustrating our current situation I spend some time discussing “The Grapes of Wrath”. There Is No Plan Finally the difference between today’s desperate and the Okies is a plan. In conclusion there is no plan. Word To The Wise In fact if you’re a nomad or want to be one you have to be able to identify this situation and the places you don’t want to stay. Freezing My Ass In Big Bear California Freezing my ass in Big Bear California . Not really. From Los Angeles to Big Bear in Freezing-My-Ass-Big-Bear-California-Bob Davis Podcast 1152. It’s a little cooler at seven thousand feet than it is down in the desert. Oil Change Firstly after trying several mechanics in LA I discovered no one wants to take the big old ambulance on for an oil change.. Forget LA Secondly I called in an audible. As a matter of fact my Brother and Sister in Law have a place in Big Bear. We came up last week after Thanksgiving. And we planned to come back up this weekend anyway. Welcome To Big Bear Country So I decided to take a chance and find someone to do an oil change up at Big Bear. Family and Fun By the same token it is not only fun but really good for me to spend some time with family up here. Furthermore the mooch-docking continues. Basically what’s not to like. Big Bear History To begin with Freezing-My-Ass-Big-Bear-California-Bob Davis Podcast 1152 takes a very surface look at the history of this area. From Native Americans to Miners and later Settlers. And Grizzlies. The American West In fact I am fascinated these days with the history of the American West. Real History Even more one of my conclusions is that the history of the settlement of the American West is in many ways the real history of the United States. Tests That is to say that the real test of the legal institutions of the new country back in the day was the push west starting with the Ohio River Valley. People Led The Way Significantly I think it’s fair too suggest that the people led the way during the decades before the Continental United States became a reality. Controversy Of course controversy is and has always been a factor in this part of the country. Therefore I am not taking a position on any of these historical realities. Natural Beauty In addition California continues to amaze me with its natural beauty. The Drive Up Accordingly the drive up to Big Bear from LA starts with the usual traffic jams. Mountain Views Giving way to breathtaking mountain views afterward. New Podcast All in all there is a lot to talk about in this podcast. Future Plans in like manner I take a little time to talk about future plans. Fly Over Equally impressive was the experience of getting buzzed by my pilot nephew and the audio I was able to capture. Short Distance Travel To sum up being able to travel short distances and have a complete change of point of view is just what the doctor ordered for this nomad. MoochDocking Thanksgiving In LA MoochDocking Thanksgiving in LA has been a lot of fun. When we hang out at someone’s house and use their electric we call it ‘ Moochdocking ‘. Details in MoochDocking-Thanksgiving-LA-Bob Davis Podcast 1151. Not Home For The Holidays Firstly most of the time we nomads don’t go home for the holidays. Certainly distance is usually an issue. Secondly for many family is also an issue. 100 Miles Away However I was 100 miles away from my brother in law’s house in LA. So what the hell. Driveway With Hook Ups Accordingly the driveway with an electric hookup is a far cry from the dry lake bed at Joshua Tree… Or Joshua Tree National Park. Judgements Another key point is the fact that we nomads have judgements about life “back in the world”. Longer Equals Less Judgement Although the longer I do this the less judgmental I become. After all some people prefer a house and a car… and some people prefer the road. Raising Kids Finally I have come to appreciate how difficult it is for people to raise three kids and keep it together in the suburbs or anywhere else. Big Screen TV All in all it has been great to see my nieces and watch TV on a big screen. Group Cooking Effort By all means the group effort Thanksgiving Dinner was also a hit. Pure Luxury In addition I must say having electricity 24/7 is pure luxury. Difficult Nomad Life All of this is a tremendous contrast to the unquestionably difficult experience nomad life can sometimes be. Lessons Learned To begin with when I hit the road I did not realize the lessons I would learn in the next four years. Harsh Judgements But sometimes I think we judge too harshly when it comes to life ‘back in the world’. Not Going Back While this may be true I certainly am not about to go back to my old life. Choose The Road Up against one or the other I would choose the road for sure. For example I don’t think too much about the day of the week. And am therefore free to spend as much time as I want in a place like Joshua Tree National Park … The Gift We Give Ourselves To enumerate this is the gift we nomads give ourselves when we take the plunge. Appreciate As a result as I begin the fifth year of this adventure I have learned to appreciate my friends and family ‘back in the world’. Not Running A Campground While that may be true I also don’t lean as much on friends and family across the country to stay in their driveways. After all they aren’t running campgrounds, However when I do it is a great glimpse at another life. MoochDocking-Thanksgiving-LA-Bob Davis Podcast 1151 is a free wheeling podcast about the differences between nomad life and so called ‘normal’ life. Sponsored by 36/LYN MoochDocking-Thanksgiving-LA-Bob Davis Podcast 1151 The post MoochDocking-Thanksgiving-LA-Bob Davis Podcast 1151 appeared first on The Bob Davis Podcasts .…
Joshua Tree National Park Joshua Tree National Park is certainly one of the best National Parks in the US. Some rate it the best. I am live from Joshua Tree in Joshua-Tree-National-Park-Bob Davis Podcast 1150. Dry Lake Bed It Is Not Of course it is a far dry from the dry lake bed I’ve been staying at for over a month. Although the dry lake bed has its charms. Loving National Parks Equally important is the fact that I am growing partial to National Parks. Grand Canyon and now Joshua Tree Of course getting stuck for a month in the Grand Canyon is pretty great. Listen to the Grand Canyon Podcast here . Bureau of Land Management It’s important to realize the difference between the Bureau Of Land Management ‘camp’ sites… Other Options For Nomads As well as the National Forests, State Parks and of course the National Parks. Although you have to pay in a national park…and most forests and of course state parks. And you have a fourteen day limited stay… Worth It Altogether it’s worth it. Discounts and Passes Especially if you take the time to investigate various discount passes you can get. BLM Stewardship Is Not Like The National Parks In addition I spend a little time in this podcast talking about recent issues with the Bureau of Land Management’s stewardship of the land. Never Pay Camp Fees? In the same fashion while I know many nomads consider it a badge of honor of they never pay camp fees. Free Is Good To be sure free is good. Condition of Free However balanced against the state of some ‘free’ campgrounds I wonder whether ‘free’ is actually worth it. Vibe Furthermore Joshua Tree National Park has a special vibe. For one thing two deserts come together in the park. Therefore one part of a stay in the park might be completely different from another part. Equally important are the hiking options throughout the park. No Travel Tips Though Finally I don’t really do travel tips and I talk about this a fair amount in this podcast. Presently there are plenty of travel tip and advice videos available on YouTube. Travel Is A Personal Discovery But I think the real juice of travel is discovering it on our own. Now I have certainly gotten myself into more than one mess with this attitude, On the other hand in the end, it has been worth it. Values and Principles are All In The Family Firstly this is a personal and heartfelt podcast about Values and Principles and It’s All In The Family. Details in Values-Principles-All In The Family-Bob Davis Podcast 1149. Suggested By A YouTube Viewer Secondly the idea for this podcast came from a YouTube viewer. Principles To begin with this viewer suggested I talk about the principles of Mountain Men and how I have adopted them. Of course I don’t follow someone else’s principles. I follow my own. Source But where do they come from. Great Idea So that’s a great idea for a podcast. My Family Accordingly I delve deeply into my own family for clues. Personal Therefore this became a rather personal and heartfelt podcast. Four Generations Because I went back four generations sharing what I know about my ancestors and what they were like. That is to say what they might have believed in when it came to principles… And how they lived their lives. Where Did You Find These Stories Because I’m going so far back you might wonder about the source. With this is mind much of the stories come from my Grandfather. All in all my mom as well. Not only these… But my own memories too. Confuse Values and Principles Above all I think people confuse values with principles. Of course principles can come from values. On the other hand I find principles more like hard and fast rules… And values to be more flexible. Hard To Adopt Principles Given these points it’s difficult to see how this nomad could have adapted or adopted the principles of an historical figure. Channeling In spite of the feeling you might get from watching a movie about some figure or character that results in a feeling like you can almost channel the them… Eventually you’re left with your own history and family story. Everyone Has A Different Story Lastly of course these are different for everyone. Certainly some of us would rather not follow principles of certain family members. Nevertheless we learn our family’s principles in early childhoods. Accordingly that makes Values-Principles-All In The Family-Bob Davis Podcast 1149 a very personal and emotional podcast. Follow Along In conclusion it’s my hope the listener will follow along as I tell my story. Think About Your Own Family and Principles And accordingly remember your own childhood for ideas that apply. Four Years On The Road Four years on the road full time as a nomad is pretty hard for me to believe. Details in Four-Years-On-The-Road-The-Bob Davis Podcast 1148. Halloween Four Years ago on Halloween I left my emptied duplex in Minnesota for a life on the road. Full Time In nomad and RV parlance it’s called ‘full time’. Travel I certainly put my time in as a part time nomad from 2015 until 2020. But full time is something else again. No Big Thank You’s By all means I am grateful for the support friends, family, listeners and subscribers have given me. However there won’t be a lot of thank you’s in this podcast because I usually save that for New Year’s Eve. Change Additionally this fourth year was a year of change. Beneath The Surface In fact I did not know my ideas about nomad life were changing at the same time Nomad Life in general was changing. Goodbye Quartzsite For one thing while I love Quartzsite and have enjoyed at least two years there in the winter. There has been a change in the air and I feel it is time to seek out new adventures. I’ll explain in Four-Years-On-The-Road-The-Bob Davis Podcast 1148. Adventure Equally important to me is the idea of new adventure. Now, adventure means different things to different people. Instead of climbing mountains and jumping out of airplanes just the idea of movement and seeing new places is adventure for me. Joshua Tree For example following my departure from Quartzsite this fall I am now in Joshua Tree. Although by the time you read this I might be somewhere else in the Southwest. Travelogue All in all one of the great things about these Halloween Anniversary podcasts is a chance to do a little travelogue. Nomads Are In A Different Timeline First thing to remember about nomad life is we’re on a different timeline. Given that we travel around a lot sometimes it’s hard to remember where we were and when we were in one place or another. After all life is about the experience. Not always the dates and times. Podcasts As a result I often have to go back and consult the list at The Bob Davis Podcasts to see where I was and when I was! You can do the same thing by clicking here . Fifth Year Henceforth we begin the fifth year. What Do I Want At this point it’s all about figuring out just want I want from this experience. Freedom One thing’s for sure. I don’t think I could ever go back to the old life. Las Vegas To Joshua Tree Firstly Las Vegas-Joshua Tree-Bob Davis Podcast 1147 is about a computer meltdown forcing the nomad back on the road . Secondly I am not mad about it. Thinking About More Travel Most importantly I have been thinking about traveling more lately. Roll With The Punches Altogether sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. Water and PC’s Don’t Mix Although this may be true when you spill water on your PC unexpectedly it stirs the pot to say the least. But if we’re speaking the truth… Done With Quartzsite For Now With this in mind I was about done with Quartzsite Arizona anyway. YouTube Certainly I had just finished a YouTube video about how we can’t predict the future. Changes In Mecca And in that video I talked a little about how the experience in the so called nomad Mecca has changed over the past few years. New Adventure Therefore I have been looking for a new adventure. Rather than just sit there and be unhappy I took the opportunity to do something new. As much as I love my friends in Quartzsite during the winter months. Bloom Is Off The Rose While this may be true the bloom is off the rose. Heading North To Las Vegas Even though goodbyes are difficult it was great to get back on 95 and head up to Havasu City, Searchlight Nevada and ultimately Las Vegas. Afterward while I am not a gambler and have not been a fan of Las Vegas lately… Surprisingly Easy Navigating to Town Square Mall and the Apple Store was surprisingly easy. New Mac Straightaway I was negotiating for new Mac Pro. All in all this is an opportunity to finally have the IT juice to do some video editing as well as improved quality for the podcast. Learning Curve However there will be a bit of a learning curve since I can’t access all the data on the old Mac Pro currently. And you have to learn all new ins and outs of updated software, so no music in this podcast. Solving Problems At any rate the thing about problems is you get to solve them. Searchlight To I-40 Lastly coming back the way I came through Searchlight I happened upon on of my reference points in my travels. Truck Stop Time In other words a cluster of truck stops at I-40 and 95. Coupled with a new digital lease on life I had a chance to chill out to the sound of semis and reset my plans. In conclusion some of these plans are discussed in this podcast. More About This Next Podcast But I’ll talk more about the journey in my next podcast to celebrate four years as a nomad full time and start out the fifth year of travel. Content Creators To begin with content creators thrive on active audiences that watch and listen to their content… And subscribe. Grateful Above all we are grateful for the listens, views and subscriptions. We’ll Take The Help In short anything that can help our fledgling channels grow. Active Audiences Significantly every now and then we stumble onto a small and active demographic which for some unknown reason our content “was made for”. Thousands Of Views The result can often be tens of thousands of views and a boon to all the other platforms we’re on. This just happened to me and if you want to see the video click here . This happened to me here in Quartzsite, Arizona this fall. Phenomenon So my code word for this phenomenon is “Quartzsite Bullseye”. Gangbusters On the other hand fleeting success suddenly changes to gangbusters. Surprising the content creator. The The Chase Begin Hence he or she begins to chase something called an algorithm . After that known as the carrot. Painting Oneself Into A Corner All of the sudden our content creator is sucked into painting himself into a corner… In the final analysis, with the same content over and over. Small Overall Audiences Because that kind of content gets views, shares, likes and subscriptions. All in all is this good for the content creator? No Thank You I’ll take the views. But in the long term I refuse to fall into that trap. Controversy In The Grand Canyon State In detail I’m down here in Arizona. Where in fact there is quite a controversy underway about a proposed fee increase of over 300 percent for seasonal fees to use Bureau Of Land Management Long Term Visitor Areas. Comments Furthermore as I watch this situation unfold let’s say I have fielded hundreds of comments as well, most of which haven’t been very enlightening. By all means this is discussed in Quartzsite-Bullseye-Bob Davis Podcast 1146. Nomad Life’s Deteriorating Condition Afterward we’ll talk about the state of nomad life. Montana Yellowstone Idaho Firstly I’m on another big trip from Wisconsin through to Montana, Yellowstone and Idaho. Ultimately I’ll be pulling into Quartzsite, Arizona earlier than planned. But this is a great route south. Details in Montana-Yellowstone-Idaho-Bob Davis Podcast 1145. Custer National Battlefield Monument Secondly my Montana visit was punctuated with a visit to the Custer National Battlefield Monument. For details on that experience check out my YouTube channel here . Soul Happy Above all when I am traveling my soul is happy. Juices Flowing That is to say when the wheels are turning the creative juices are flowing. Much To See Also there are always amazing things to see. Observations Another key point is my observations on what I have experienced on the trip so far. Old Story From Yellowstone Certainly a ‘pass-through’ this year was a lot different from a old story about pushing a VW Bug through the park in the middle of the night. This experience differed markedly from the VW experience so many years go. What’s With The Bison? For one thing people these days seem to be mad to get through the park so they can get pictures of Bison. I’ve witnessed behavior in the same fashion at the Grand Canyon. Jewels As much as it is important to celebrate the fact that we Americans have these wilderness jewels to marvel over… On the negative side I’m not sure people are actually experiencing these parks. Selfies They are too busy taking selfies. Camping Booked On the other hand I am glad the park was too busy for camping. Pass Through Because a pass through was just what the doctor ordered at this point in the trip. Land Of Sky Blue Waters Because I camped all summer as I like to say on the shores of a lake in the ‘Land of Sky Blue Waters’… After that I am not so keen to camp. Truck Stops All in all truck stops are my go to these days. Recording In Flying J’s Lot Basically it’s pretty hard to miss in this podcast since I recorded in a Flying J Parking Lot. Oil Cheaper Overall oil is getting cheaper… Winter Travel Therefore the winter looks promising for more travel and adventure. By all means getting down to Quartzite is my priority… 115 Degrees But when I last checked the weather it was 115 degrees in the desert out there. By all means the subject for my next podcast. What Makes Your Soul Happy Above all what makes your soul happy? Recently after a week with a hundred plus degree fever I awoke to this question. Details in What-Makes-Your-Soul-Happy-Bob Davis Podcast 1144. This Question Firstly none other than Joseph Campbell suggested that as time goes on and we age we’re left with this question. This Question Is Dangerous Certainly when we’re young we don’t make the time for these kinds of thoughts, Even more a thought like what makes your soul happy is even dangerous. Because we’re bringing things into this world. For example family, marriage, getting that great job, starting businesses and so on. In short making our dreams come true. But as we age eventually the world recedes and the body gives out. Of course we know this. Province of Any Age Therefore while it is the province of age to nurture our soul it doesn’t hurt to devote some time to this question. Another Year Of Nomad Life? As a matter of fact as a nomad I had been considering whether I want to continue to do this. Quartzsite Nomad Experience In light of this question I suggest in this podcast that I felt I’d had it with the whole “ Quartzsite Nomad Experience ” last winter. Wondering Why And really wonder why I do this at all sometimes. On the other hand there is the question of what makes my soul happy. Looking Back As an illustration some thoughts come to my about my own childhood. Wild Child Because I was a wild child much of my motivations and actions in life seemed impulsive. Elemental. No Plan Might Just Be A Plan And yet my decisions to do this or that sometimes on a whim seemed to always work out. Changes Given these points I have been considering some changes and wondering whether I want to continue for a fifth year on the road. To say nothing of the fever. So when I woke up and asked myself that question… The answers formed this podcast. State Of The Summer 2024 Firstly for this State of The Summer 2024 Report I don’t like to draw attention to negatives. But a whole month has gone by with no podcast! Let’s talk about it in State-Of-The-Summer-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1143. Nothing To Say? Secondly much of my radio silence over the past few weeks is due to the fact that I have nothing to say. With this is mind is it writer’s block? Or am I lost in summer’s bliss? Busy Summer Certainly it has been a busy summer. Of course a lot of socializing on the Wisconsin Shore. Too Much Talking What’s more a lot of talking. Too much talking. To be tired of talking is altogether strange for me. But there it is. On A Path Balanced against canoe rides on the still lake and dinners around the campfire there’s a lower octave. Accordingly we seem to be a on path. With this in mind there doesn’t seem to be much more to say about it. Won’t Chase Likes and Shares In addition I don’t want to be the kind of content creator who mines his life and everyone in it to chase likes and shares. Saving Some Of This Summer For Myself Moreover there are some experiences I save just for myself. The Lake’s First Signs Of Fall After that as I watch the lake I feel the first signs of fall. Time To Go All things considered it’s time to go. In short it won’t be long til I am back on the road. Decisions About Fall Travel All in all I’ve made two decisions about this fall and winter. To that end which way to head and whether to camp alone this winter wherever I end up. Crackling Summer Summing up it’s been a summer crackling with observations, friends, food and some adventure… No sooner than I have discovered I am exhausted from all of this… Ready To Travel And preparing to travel again. Winning With Procrastination and Laziness All things considered maybe we need to consider winning with procrastination and laziness . That is to say we’re over tasked and under appreciated. Details in Winning-With-Procrastinaton-And-Laziness-Bob Davis Podcast 1142. Feeling Overwhelmed Furthermore I am seeing plenty of posts from disaffected workers about how overwhelmed we feel. Natural Man Therefore in this podcast I first consider Natural Man or Ancient Man. Chiefly the original hunter-gatherers in the mists of time. For example the Celts… Or the Plains Indian. Clocks In fact primitive clocks only go back to around 3500 BC. ( By the way I announced the source for this statement as a ‘blogger’ named Jack Mason. In fact it is brand name for a watch! ) The Sun Moon And Stars Balanced against our minute by minute and second by second world primitive man told time with the sun, the moon and the stars. Technology Of course the clock was a major technological improvement. Teamwork Even more I won’t go so far as to suggest that human beings are ever going to get anything done if they can work as a team to complete tasks. However life today is getting a little ridiculous. Time To Ourselves To put it another way even at the dawn of the industrial age on through the 1980’s people had time to themselves. Allow The Mind To Wander Comparatively they had more time to allow their minds to wander. Consequently while they were riding the train or bus… Or driving to and from work… Problem Solve Their minds could rest and ‘problem solve’. No Time For That Now With this in mind the most compelling evidence for the use of procrastination and laziness as a tool for success is the fact that we have almost no time to do this these days. Demand The Time Hence we have to demand or take the time to be lazy and to put things off. Laziness and Procrastination Are No Longer Negatives With this in kind Winning-With-Procrastinaton-And-Laziness-Bob Davis Podcast 1142 is all about why procrastination and laziness are no longer negatives. Recognizing The Need For Organization So firstly while recognizing the need for organization and goal setting in business, family and corporate life… What We Think We Have To Do It’s also secondly realizing most of what we think we have to do isn’t really necessary. Summer By The Lake Finally the more I sit by the lake this summer… and to simplify. Nightly Campfire And mediate on the nightly campfire… Happier The more I think giving ourselves permission to win with procrastination and laziness the happier we will be! Let Our Minds Work In The Background In the final analysis I think a lot of the work of life takes place when we allow our minds to wander and attack a problem subconsciously. Controlled By Modern Devices And Nonsense Having said that often the problem is our devices and so called demands of life won’t allow our minds to work. Given these points I understand why people demand remote work options and enjoy it so much. In essence it’s time to realize if you put something off so you can be lazy… You’re not a bum. In fact you might be the smartest person in the room. Is Oldschool SocialMedia Dying? Is Oldschool SocialMedia dying? The bloom is certainly off the rose these days. Details in Is-OldSchool-SocialMedia-Dying?-Bob Davis Podcast 1141. Media Is Starting To Cover This Issue Even more we’re starting to see media regarding this issue. User Experience Another key point is the user experience. It sucks as a matter of fact. Notwithstanding the fact that Old School Social Media isn’t going away. Worthwhile Advertising Outlets? Companies are beginning to question whether these aging platforms are worthwhile advertising outlets. Testing Advertising Accordingly I tell some stories about testing advertising on Facebook awhile back. Where Are The Major Corporations Furthermore one wonders why major corporations aren’t usually heavily represented on these Old School platforms? Lower Engagement Concurrently there have been stories detailing lower and lower levels of engagement. Welcome To The Nursing Homes Of Social Media Firstly what is happening is younger demographics are moving to messaging apps, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube. Of course that leaves older and older people using the Old School platforms. What’s The Utility Of LinkedIn? In addition to Facebook one wonders what is up with Linkedin. Along these lines I include a drop from a recent rant from a content creator about the jobs and so called business platform. Users are wondering what the utility for Linked In is in the same fashion. Small Business Another key point is the fact the small businesses often use these platforms to advertise their services. Do You Want To Be Associated With A Bad User Experience For these businesses a point often overlooked is what happens when your business is associated with the kind of bad user experience found on Old School Social Media these days. For example trolls, bots and spam. Not to mention negative comments. The Little Guy Uses These Platforms Finally from time to time I talk about these kinds of issues. The reason being many of my nomad friends and myself use these platforms to get the word out about our blogs, podcasts and videos. Newer And Different Platforms With this purpose in mind another key reason to consider newer and different platforms are the algorithms. Help Me Find An Audience In other words newer platforms help you find an audience. However older platforms seem to think your content is enough to generate viewers and followers. How Do Small Businesses Actually Generate Business? In this situation I spend a little time discussing how a small business actually generates clients and referrals. Socially Corrosive In conclusion I feel these old school platforms in particular are socially corrosive. Bad For Artists and Creators For example I question whether these platforms are best for content creators and artists for obvious reasons. What’s Next? All things considered I don’t know enough about software engineering to understand what is next… But I would not mourn the loss of Facebook and Linked in… And I gave up on Twitter/X a long time ago. Why Be Associated With A Bad Experience To summarize with the user experience on these platforms flat lining I don’t understand why businesses would want to be associated with them. Businesses Questioning Old School Social Media Platforms I believe all of the sudden we will see businesses starting to question whether the referrals they get are real people… Or if they’re getting any referrals at all from these older social media platforms. #Nomad Life Lessons Learned Firstly #Nomadlife-Lessons-Part-Two-Bob Davis Podcast 1140 is a continuation of the line of thought I started in Part 1 in this series. Welcome To The Anarchy Secondly #Nomadlife itself is an anarchic world. That is to say there are no set rules or “To Do’s” necessarily. In other words there is no set way to be a ‘nomad’. All About The Individual You The lifestyle chiefly depends on the individual. For instance what you need and what works for you. Most Advice Is Useless By all means my own interpretation of what is available when it comes to nomad content I have found to be pretty useless if you’re just starting out. Purpose Accordingly having a conversation with yourself about your purpose is important. Work Is No Picnic These Days Certainly it’s necessary to reiterate current economic conditions make housing very expensive… Even more rules about coming back to the office put people of all age groups in a vice. Because with seventy minute commutes in most major cities and higher prices, keeping up has become difficult. Not to mention the oppressive nature of corporate and work life. Alternative Lifestyle So wanting an alternative lifestyle is not just a romantic notion these days. All in all #nomadlife is a consideration… What To Expect Therefore in #Nomadlife-Lessons-Part-Two-Bob Davis Podcast 1140 my goal is to give future nomads an idea of what to expect. For the most part it’s a great experience. Revenue However we all need a revenue stream and a purpose. Vehicle or ‘Rig’ Thereafter almost everyone’s attention turns to what kind of vehicle to get. Unquestionably this is is the fun part. By the same token so is throwing all your crap away before you leave. Don’t Borrow Money For An RV But don’t borrow a bunch of money for an RV because they are not built for what we do.. Leave The Minivan At Home And you might want to think twice about cramming into a minivan… Although you will find videos and blogs that tell you this is a great idea. To clarify there is a fair amount of desperation out there… You need a little bit more room and capability than a minivan although some have made it work. It’s a Personal Journey Finally I don’t think the personal journey is emphasized enough. Even more I think going out for the first year alone is a good idea. In conclusion I spent a fair amount of time at the end of this podcast talking about the personal journey. The Story Travel Tells The story you are allowing time and space and travel to tell you. And it’s so important to remember sometimes to have an adventure you have to just go. #Nomadlife Lessons Part One Altogether after many years as a nomad it’s time to share some lessons in #Nomadlife-Lessons-Part One-Bob Davis Podcast 1139. With this purpose in mind I set out to cram all the lessons into one podcast. But it turns out I have a lot of content to share when it comes to nomad lessons. State Of Mind In #Nomadlife-Lessons-Part One-Bob Davis Podcast 1139 I begin with our state of mind when we first test the nomad waters. Accordingly there’s some discussion about economic conditions these days. Conditions Before You Go That is to say conditions which might drive people out on the road and into #Nomadlife. Firstly there is the fact that housing has not decreased in price despite the reduction of inflation. Triggers Even more most working people have thirty to forty percent less buying power than they did in 2019. Certainly part of the reason I got rid of just about everything I owned was the increasing price of rent. And the overbearing nature of efforts to contain the pandemic. After that being on the road meant being free. No More Free Money In addition back in 2020 there were a number of pandemic relief funds and incentives which helped many to adopt the nomad lifestyle. All of the sudden those measures are no longer available… Back To Work Peasant Significantly as well these days more businesses are exhorting workers to return to the office. So I think the bloom might be off the rose slightly when it comes to hitting the road… On the other hand this reality can also be a trigger for chucking the nine to five suburban lifestyle. Especially when you consider some commutes are now seventy minutes long. Romance Is Still Strong However that does not diminish the romance of this alternative lifestyle. Revenue Stream Therefore these days one has to have some kind of revenue stream to do this. Obviously retirees have savings, pensions and social security. Contrarily younger people might not have those resources. And you don’t want to hurt your own savings or future retirement. Temporary Jobs In view of this fact I spend a little time sharing what I know about some of the temporary jobs available ‘out there’. Forget YouTube On the negative side many future nomads imagine themselves making bank from their YouTube channel. Of course if you have experience creating content that’s one thing… But chances are a YouTube channel or Instagram is not going to foot the bill for a nomad life. Most Nomad Content Include Lists Finally I see a lot of content on line about ‘the three things you have to do before becoming a nomad’ or ‘the sixteen things you need’ and so on. Certainly some of this is good advice… Adventure Equally important though, is the sense of adventure that comes from not knowing too much about something before you do it. Enlightenment And realizing you’re getting a lot out of something as you do it. Detail I’ll give you a little more content in detail about what this experience is like in the first of these two #nomadlife lessons podcasts. No Regrets In conclusion unlike many of the posts these days decrying the lifestyle I have not regretted doing this for one day. No Politics A Better Path Firstly it’s time for some real talk about why No Politics is the better path for me. Check out No-Politics-Better-Path-Bob Davis Podcast 1138 for details. Secondly in order to explain this I do have to spend a little time talking about political science . But no personalities or issues in this podcast. No Political Content Or any podcast or YouTube video I do. In fact this has been my policy for more than three years now. Metamorphosis To clarify a metamorphosis for me began around 2020… which at length changed my approach to content on my podcasts. Long Time Listeners Already Know All things considered my subscribers and listeners know this has been my policy. On the other hand I have new listeners and subscribers both on these podcasts and through YouTube . Why? Even more people have been asking me why I don’t talk about politics… Don’t ‘Should’ me Brah Or in like manner suggesting I “should”. Better Path For Me Therefore it’s time to say again why the no politics content rule is a better path for me. Political Science More importantly it’s necessary to discuss political science for a little bit of time in this podcast. Rancor Because of course so much of social media content is devoted to back and forth arguments and rancor about national personalities and national issues. Easier To Listen Above all I can’t really write it the way I say it in this podcast… Socially Corrosive but so much of this socially corrosive rancor in on the social media platforms where people complain about ‘the media’. Useless Energy With this in mind a great deal of national government in the US is not subject to individual votes in the same manner local government is. Yet so many of these ‘arguments’ have to do with national issues. Ruining The Vibe Overall though the reason I think this is the best path for me is that political talk ruins the travel vibe. Four More Years Thirdly I have been a nomad for four years now. Positive Vibe The first thing to remember about the nomad lifestyle is it carries a very high positive vibe. We Are More Furthermore this experience taught me we can be and are so much more than yelling and screaming at each other across the back fence. Why Bring The Nightmare To The Dream? In the final analysis when someone chooses a lifestyle that is unique… It’s most important that one of the drivers of the decision to choose this lifestyle is to experience more and be more. In the long run, why bring the nightmare to the dream? Finally I do not feel all this political yelling and screaming is positive at all. Certainly not for the kind of content I have grown to love. Wisconsin Time Warp Firstly after the recent sun storms I feel like I am in a Wisconsin Time Warp and that is the starting point for a free wheeling discussion in Bob Davis Podcast 1137. Something about the Auroras seems to have bent time in the dream life. Details in Wisconsin-Time-Warp-Bob Davis Podcast 1137. 60 Days Secondly after 60 days on the road and six thousand miles of nomad travel I was due for a rest. High Energy Auroras However something about the auroras jacked me up! Subsequently I looked up and realized I had not done a podcast for awhile. Previously the plan had been to do a podcast summing up my sixty days of travel. And of course Wisconsin-Time-Warp-Bob Davis Podcast 1137 does include some conclusions. Rest Equally important to me are observations post rest. Living In A Dream Correspondingly I delve into the persistent feeling that I am living a dream. For instance the glass smooth surface of the lake. Or the waxing moon. To say nothing of an endless wood supply fueling fantastic fires every night. Nightly Ritual Equally important is my nightly ritual of dinner on the fire… After that sitting and taking in the night. In effect witnessing the dream. Deserted Lake In the third place the lake is almost deserted these early days of spring. On this occasion a few people come up to open up their cabins for the season. Steward Of A Dream World Afterward they head back to the city leaving me as the steward of this dreamworld. Even more it has been utterly still here… in the wake of the crackling energy of the auroras. Contemplate The Night All things considered a perfect time for me and the owls to contemplate the night. In any case I have just come off an incredible journey. Dream Or Reality All in all sometimes I prefer the dream to the so called ‘reality’. By and large a world where people seem to be obsessed with trying to predict the future… …and nothing seems to get resolved. What’s Real? Not only this but also creating a world that seems fake when you’re on the shores of a placid lake… Or traveling sixty days through rural America on two-lane roads. I prefer the dream, thank you. Six Thousand Miles of Back Roads Part2 Above all traveling six thousand miles on backroads across 15 states in sixty days is a mega trip and I’ll tell you all about it in Part 2 of this series. Details in Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136. Florida Firstly we’ll start in Florida. Where the most compelling evidence for over crowding and over development is getting kicked out of a state park… Of course not to mention the traffic… And expense of the so called Sunshine State. Secondly take Florida off your travel list in season. Undoubtedly Florida is overdeveloped. However there are less populated and more quaint parts of Florida worth visiting and spending time. Georgia Hence we move on to Georgia Certainly the Saint Simons Cumberland national seashores are beautiful. For example Jekyll Island, Saint Simons, and the rest of the Georgia Coast has a lot of history. South Carolina Then in South Carolina I discovered some great dusty beach towns. But I am not going to name those towns because I don’t want to see them ruined. Otherwise they are there. North Carolina Subsequently the North Carolina coastline was fantastic For example highway 179… and Ocean Isle Beach, Oak Island on out to the Carolina Beach. Finally the Ferries are low cost and so much fun. Thereafter-Emerald Island, Atlantic Beach and the rest of the Outer Banks. Ocracoke Island Especially Ocracoke Island. In due time you get on Route 12 which goes all the way up to Kill Devil Hills. All in all The national Seashores keep these areas from being over developed. The Old Dominion Afterward I headed to Virginia on some personal business. Most importantly here is the fact that I lived in the Old Dominion State for ten years at one point. And Virginia has some great back roads. Eventually I left Richmond headed up 460 to Bristol, Virginia . Tennessee Presently I left Bristol for Tennessee. Details again in Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136 By all means the best of the latter parts of this trip was the navigation. Using GPS Doesn’t Make A Road Trip It must be remembered that most people enter a location on their GPS. Eventually hitting start and driving on the Interstate until the GPS tells them they have arrived. All things considered using GPS on the Interstates just isn’t any way to travel for me. Maps To this end I love maps. And navigating with maps. Nashville In short I navigated to the Nashville area without all the traffic. Because Nashville is booming. Civil War History Equally important is the amount of Civil War history in this part of the country. Death and Destruction Monuments That is to say it is food for thought considering popular culture these days. Kentucky Does Not Like Shoulders Accordingly I moved onto Kentucky which does not like shoulders on its roads. Illinois Then Southern Illinois. As an illustration of the superiority of maps over GPS it’s easier to make changes in your travel plans. Because you pull out a map and look for a route to emerge to a new destination. Thus I headed North to the Chicago area to see friends. Navigation At this point another tremendous feat of navigation coming up on 51. Cairo On this occasion I came across Cairo, Illinois. To begin this town is so beat down it was actually shocking. In fact there’s a reason. Listen to Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136. (Editor’s Note: Some might blame flooding for the problems in Cairo but there’s more to the story. ) Neenah Wisconsin In time I came straight up through Wisconsin to Neenah . In conclusion much of this experience has been and is like a dream and now it is onto Western Wisconsin and rest! And I wouldn’t have it any other way Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136 Sponsored By 36LYN The Independently Owned And Operated Refueling Station The post Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136 appeared first on The Bob Davis Podcasts .…

Six Thousand Miles Backroads Part 1 Of A Series I’ve traveled six thousand miles on the Backroads since I left Arizona in February. More than eleven states and many experiences. Details in Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part1-Bob Davis Podcast-1135. Arizona to Wisconsin Firstly I talk about the routes I’ve taken from Arizona to Wisconsin by way of several states. From the Southwest Secondly it all started in Quartzsite Arizona. To clarify I spend my winters in the Southwest. To The South East So a spring wedding scheduled for March 15th in Sarasota Florida was a great motivator and trip goal. Therefore on about February 26th, 2024 I left Quartzsite to begin what would turn out to be a six thousand mile trip. Experiences Above all in Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part1-Bob Davis Podcast-1135 I detail the routes and experiences along the way. Backroads In the same fashion I explain my motivation in staying to America’s BackRoads. However every now and then I have to take an interstate. But I try to keep that to a minimum. Accordingly I headed out East along Interstate 8 in Southwestern Arizona. Routes and Takeaways Additionally I detail some takeaways from each state I traversed on my way to Florida. One For The Books All in all this trip through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and eventually Florida is one for the books. Desert Border For one thing the whole trip was either along the US-Mexico border … Gulf Coast Or the Gulf Coast. Including at length beach towns and shores along the Gulf Coast . Series In contrast this journey is a series because of my experiences in Florida and on up the East Coast. Truck Stops To Parking Lots From potential campgrounds to truck stops and parking lots it’s been quite an experience. Overall deserts, mountains, beaches and swamps. Small Towns And some undeniably wonderful small towns along the way. Low And Slow Travel One of the points overlooked by many thinking about the nomad lifestyle is the fact that we travel low and slow. That is to say that travel does not have to be compressed into a short period of time. The Vast Nation Even more the opportunity to observe and catalog vast swaths of the country seen from its back roads is key. Media Disconnect Most important is the country one sees from the back roads is not the country the media shows us. Positive In the positive side I saw a lot of development and activity this trip. Negative In a similar fashion I did not see mayhem on the US Border. Conclusion In conclusion aside from in season traffic and too much development in Florida… There’s nothing like a long trip on the back roads. Birthplace Of Country Music Museum Firstly this podcast is about music and specifically the Birthplace of Country Music Museum . Bristol Virginia earned that title way back in 1927. Learn more in Birthplace-Of-Country-Music-Museum-Bob Davis Podcast 1134 Walk and Talk Secondly we’ll walk and talk through the Birthplace Of Country Music Museum. Musical and Historical Most importantly much of the museum is musical and historical. And it is focused primarily on audio. Featured Sounds Headphones On So those sounds are featured in this podcast. How Did Bristol Earn The Birthplace Of Country Music? Undoubtedly Bristol earned this title in the summer of 1927 when record producer Ralph Peer arrived in town to record 19 artists from Appalachia. Greater Impact Equally important is the fact that the so called Bristol Sessions had an impact far greater than anyone could have predicted in 1927 This Museum Is A Gem Thirdly my listeners know I like to roll through places rather than stop. But I made an exception for this. Above all this Smithsonian museum in Bristol is a gem. Influential Recordings Because recording what was called Hillbilly music then has proven influential in so many music genres today. Arrived Through The Mist Of Time Another key point is how this music made its way to these hills. And the songs go back to the Lowlands of Scotland, Wales and England. Bristol Boom Significantly Bristol was booming back in 1927 It was unquestionably a very active town of railroads, new industry, agriculture, retail commerce and logging. Big Bang Scholars call the Bristol Sessions analogous to the Big Bang. Johnny Cash Accordingly Johnny Cash called the Bristol sessions the single most important event in the history of country music. Resonates With this mind this subject resonates with me because music, history, and radio are brought together here. Carter Family From the Carter family with their photographic memories and in effect revolutionary style of playing.. All The Original Stars Of Country To the already reigning stars of the genre in 1927 such as Earnest Stoneman. Radio History Too Of course by 1927 The Big Barn Dance was already on WLS from Chicago… And the Grand Old Opry on WSM aired regularly on WSM in Nashville. Therefore a brand new radio and record industry were just beginning to change American Culture forever. Time Changes Everything Finally the small towns have become cities the enclaves have become suburbs. On The Crooked Highway The Past Is Present But every now and then the traveler can still see places that people back in 1927 might have called home. Up to the present time the best place to see it is The Crooked Highway. That is to say Highway 58 Virginia which takes the traveler to Bristol, Virginia… But, we’re all lucky they made the trip in 1927. Unhappy #Vanlifers Doing It Wrong Are unhappy #Vanlifers really doing it wrong? A recent Wall Street Journal post about the hash tag Van Life again points out the obvious. Details in Unhappy-#Vanlifers-Doing-It-Wrong-Bob Davis Podcast 1133. Nomad Coverage Firstly I have rarely seen positive coverage of the nomad experience. Hard Life Secondly the recent Wall Street Journal piece reports on a few #vanlife people complain about how hard the life is. Instagram And say Instagram has it all wrong. As a result I’ll ask again whether anyone actually believes anything they see on social media? Best Foot Of course we put our best foot forward. Or show our best face to the world. In other words analogous to cleaning your house before guests arrive. But there’s more. Negative Experience Because the article in question illustrates a number of negative experiences for the vanlifers interviewed. For example, no place to sleep. And not being able to take showers. Or being lonely because the dating life out here sucks. Finally the unexpected costs of mechanical problems and fuel. As I have said many times in many different podcasts… Not A Bowl Of Cherries In general life is not always a bowl of cherries. Overcome In fact part of the experience in #nomadlife is overcoming setbacks and solving problems. Won’t Quit To sum up the article on a positive note all of the van life people interviewed said they won’t quit. Great Potential All in all I believe there’s great potential in nomad life. And as I have noted as the infrastructure for digital nomads gets better… In time more may choose this lifestyle. Establishment Media Hates Nomads However I don’t think the establishment back home or the establishment media will give our lifestyle a break. Presently reporters and editors seem to love the idea that social media is ‘lying’ about living on the road. Don’t Dream In essence don’t dream of a different life. It’s too dangerous. Stay Back In The World Meanwhile keep paying ridiculous amount of rent and commuting four hours a day. By and large living in huge expensive cities and stepping over homeless people to get to the subway. Of course doing a digital job and being required to work in an office… When even in the present time you can work from anywhere. Just In Case Just in case you’re thinking about buying a van and dumping your absurdly expensive efficiency in said large city… Take a look at these poor idiots in this Wall Street Journal story without delay. After that you’ll accept your life as it is. Reality In reality over time nomad life can be easy and satisfying. Lots To Learn Of course there is a lot to learn. Yes You Can But if you can do it and you want to try. Go for it. Summer Sounds 2024 Most importantly it’s still winter in the North. Perfect for a dose of summer sounds. So, put your headphones on and prepare to be immersed in summer in Summer-Sounds-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1132. Summer Sounds Podcasts Every Year Equally important is the fact that I do these summer sounds podcasts every year. No Talk Accordingly I only talk at the beginning and end of Summer-Sounds-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1132. Immersed As a result you can sit back and be completely immersed in summer. Imagine And if you need a thought starter… Imagine an undeniably weather beaten cabin on a bluff overlooking a golden lake. In the same fashion you can almost feel the breeze through the ancient screens… In like manner the boats on the lake. At length as the sun slowly sets across the lake song of the summer bugs rises to greet you. Meanwhile you can drift off with summer washing over you. While snow falls outside your window… Transported You are transported to high summer. In fact trust me… From time to time while producing this podcast I found myself feeling better and better. Disclaimers Firstly there are a few disclaimers. As has been noted I have posted several summer sounds podcasts through the years. By and large these podcasts have been a whole summer encapsulated. For example the sounds of kids at the pool… Even thunderstorms And of course the Fourth Of July Fireworks. Smooth Ambient Sound But this time I decided to go with smooth ambient sound. For this reason there are no sharp sounds to wake the listener from their reverie. Time To Run We all know that in reality in the far North winter has some time to run. Even more Spring can sometimes be even more trying. Mental Health Having Summer-Sounds-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1132 at hand can make a big difference in mental health up North this time of year. In due time summer will be here. Or you can have it right now. Summer-Sounds-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1132 The post Summer-Sounds-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1132 appeared first on The Bob Davis Podcasts .…

Handling Mechanical Problems On The Road Handling mechanical problems on the road is a challenge for anyone. Especially nomads. Details in Handling-Mechanical-Problems-On-Road-Bob Davis Podcast 1131. Firstly this isn’t my first rodeo. Bigger Problems Above all I have been traveling for about ten years in my current rig. So I have had a few problems to deal with. However as a full time nomad it’s a bigger problem. This Is My House Not to mention the fact that the rig is also my house. This is important to make clear when the mechanic says, when do you want to pick it up? Freak Out Quickly In addition when it happens don’t freak out. Feel It And Move On Although emotions are not always easy to overcome in an emergency you have to feel it and move to problem solving. Padre Island Accordingly I was on my way to Padre Island National Seashore. To explain I I was having a great day thinking about where I was going to camp . Volt Meter All of a sudden I looked down at Mobile Podcast Command’s volt meter. To begin with the meter was reading lower than what it should have. And it was sinking. Happened Before Because this had happened before I knew what to do. I had to find somewhere to address the problem without delay. Firstly I found an auto repair shop within a mile. In this situation it’s important to realize you have to take what you get. Lucked Out Secondly I lucked into finding a great bunch of guys to help. Most importantly I tell that story in Handling-Mechanical-Problems-On-Road-Bob Davis Podcast 1131. Alternator In the long run I learned I needed two alternators. All things considered another lesson. Money It’s going to cost you money and you have to be prepared for that. Opportunity For The Sublime However this was also an occasion to stop and realize there are always opportunities for sublime experiences. In brief an opportunity to earn how other people work and what they do. Life On The Road As well as having an experience you didn’t plan on. That’s life on the road. And I suppose life in general. Maps Planning Arizona To Florida 2024 Time to check the maps and do some planning for my Arizona to Florida 2024 adventure. And some stories too. Details in Maps-Planning-Arizona-Florida-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1129. Firstly it’s been a minute since I was on the roads. Great To Be Back Secondly it sure feels good to be preparing for a 2500 mile road trip from Quartzsite Arizona to Sarasota Florida. On The Back Roads As a matter of fact I have been stopped down here in the desert since October of 2023. So I am ready to hit the road. To say nothing of the power of the back roads. Maps And Planning With this purpose in mind I’ll share the types of maps I use complete with the sound of turning pages. Rig Improvements In addition I’ll share some of the improvements to mobile podcast command. Planning Furthermore we’ll also discuss travel plans for this trip. Navigation And how to navigate the back roads on the fly to get where you want to be and save fuel. In view of the main objective and the distance to be traveled… I don’t need to point out there are many different options available. First thing to remember is the type of maps. In fact I started out with a Rand McNally road atlas. But recently graduated to Benchmark Maps . All things considered the Benchmark maps are very useful for navigating the back roads anywhere in the west. Places and Things Above all I like to talk about some of the places I’ve seen and roads I have traveled. Maps-Planning-Arizona-Florida-2024-Bob Davis Podcast 1129 is a great opportunity to talk about these subjects. Staying Off The Interstates Certainly staying off the Interstates is a learned skill. Practice Makes Perfect If you are plying the back roads then you know it takes a lot of practice to make sure you end up where you want to. As I have shown the nomad ends up navigating on the fly in almost all these situations. To that end when it works it’s a joy. However when it doesn’t then let’s just say it’s a learning experience. Finally it’s great to be back on the road and moving again. Still Captivated By Nomad Life Firstly Still-Captivated-By-Nomad-Life-Bob Davis Podcast 1130 includes a clip from a syndicated radio show because the hosts were talking about me! It reminded me that nomad life still captivates people. Old Friends Secondly a few years ago I visited my old friend Max who produces and fills in on the Bob and Sherrie show. Here’s a link to the podcast we did together a few years ago when I first started my nomad journey. Background Altogether the podcast we did together gives the listener a little background on our history. Series On The Nomad Experience Finally I have been doing kind of a series on the current state of the nomad experience. Quartzsite For The Winter In fact I am camped out here in the Southwestern Arizona desert in Quartzsite for the winter. Drawbacks As much as I love nomad life my most recent podcast talked about some of the drawbacks I have experienced this winter. And talks about my desire to get more out of the lifestyle. Audio From The Show Included So I thought it was appropriate to play the clip from the Bob and Sherrie show recently where they were talking about my experience. No End To My Nomad Roaming Days Because I really have no intention to end my nomad roaming days. Technology Even more I believe as technology continues to improve… More Nomads In addition it’s important to point out that there are many different tribes in this lifestyle. That is to say there are digital nomads as well as various workers who travel. And plenty of others who travel in a like manner. International Analogous to nomads in the US are other ‘tribes’ in Europe, Asia and other international locations. Why Are People Captivated By This Lifestyle Eventually I get to reasons people are captivated by this lifestyle. Details Coupled with a few more details some might not have heard about my own experience. Better When The Wheels Are Turning All things considered part of my frustration with Quartzsite this year stems from the fact that I do not like sitting. As I have noted I always feel better when the wheels are turning. More However I still believe I want a little more out of this experience. And I’ll be talking about that as it develops in future months. So, check out Still-Captivated-By-Nomad-Life-Bob Davis Podcast 1130… And thanks again to Bob and Sherrie and Max for talking about my nomad experience.
