Paying attention and active listening are not the same thing. It takes focus and intention to be an active listener. Paying attention is just the first step.
There are five key techniques you can use to improve your active listening skills:
Pay attention.
Physically show that you're listening.
Provide feedback.
Defer judgment.
Respond thoughtfully.
Learn to use active listening techniques to become a better communicator, improve your workplace productivity, and develop better relationships.
Shelley Carney and Toby Younis discuss how active listening can improve relationships and provide high-quality, productive and educational conversations.
