Ways To Prevent Credit Card Fraud
Credit card fraud is a form of identity theft in which criminals make purchases or obtain cash advances using a credit card account assigned to them. This can occur through one of your existing accounts, via theft of your physical credit card or your account numbers and PINs, or by means of new credit card accounts being opened in your name without your knowledge. Once they're in, thieves then run up charges and stick you and your credit card company with the bill.
1. Keep credit cards at safe locations:
Store your credit cards in your wallet or purse, which ensures that it remains close to your body, and cannot be snatched away easily. It is also safer to carry only a couple of credit cards rather than multiple ones while shopping. After paying for the purchase, make sure you put the card back immediately.
2. Set up a fraud alert or credit freeze if your card is lost or stolen:
As soon as you realize your credit card is gone, report this immediately to your credit card issuer so it can freeze your account
If you aren't sure how long your card has been missing, the safest thing to do is set up a fraud alert or a credit freeze. With a fraud alert, when a thief tries to open an account, the creditor will typically call you to verify your identity and confirm that you were the one who applied. With a credit freeze, creditors can't even access your credit reports.
3. Don't disclose card details.
One of the most popular methods used by credit card scammers is phoning the cardholder and asking for sensitive information while posing as a customer service agent. You should use extra caution while providing your credit card number or any additional sensitive information over the phone. Never answer calls from a bank or other financial organisation requesting such information. Only provide your credit card information during calls you have placed to bank representatives or the helpline number listed on the back of your card if it is absolutely essential.
