In the late 1960s James Lovelock, a British scientist, and Lynn Margulis, an American evolutionary theorist developed the Gaia Theory. Gaia comes from the ancient Greek goddess who personified the Earth. In essence, the theory proposes that the Earth, its living organisms, and its physical components are not separate entities but are interdependent and work together as a complex, interconnected network. Overall, the Gaia Theory challenges us to view the Earth as a holistic, self-regulating entity.
