Scripture: John 1:1-14 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. Synopsis In this sermon, we explore the essence of what it means to be the church in the 21st century. Reflecting on John 1:1-14, we examine how the church is called to embody Christ's presence in the world, much like Jesus was the incarnate Word of God. The message challenges us to reconsider the traditional notion of church as merely a building and instead embrace the idea that the church is wherever God's people are. We are encouraged to step beyond our walls, not just inviting others in but going out into our communities, workplaces, and neighborhoods to build relationships and reflect the light of Christ. Drawing from the example of John the Baptist, who ministered in the wilderness, we are called to meet people where they are, both physically and spiritually, and to bring the church to them. This message invites us to rethink how we "practice church" and challenges us to live out the incarnational nature of our faith in today's world. It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 14 ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Synopsis In this sermon, we explore the parable of the lonely ember, a powerful illustration of how our spiritual fire can dwindle when disconnected from community. While this story is often used to encourage church attendance, today’s message invites us to go deeper. It’s not just about being present in church but about how the church community kindles and sustains our faith. As we navigate the challenges of living in “unprecedented times,” we often feel exhausted, retreating to what feels safe and familiar. But the church is called to adapt, sparking new fires and taking the light of Christ into the world, beyond the comfort of our buildings. Drawing from Christ’s teaching that we are the salt and light of the earth, we are reminded that God’s grace shapes us, and our light must shine in ways that welcome and transform others. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. In this sermon, we explore Communion as a profound expression of grace within our faith practice. Rooted in the scriptural foundation provided by 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Communion is described as a means of grace, a holy mystery, where Christ is spiritually present and the invitation is open to all. We emphasize that Communion is not about our worthiness but about Christ's invitation to share in this sacred meal. Paul’s concern for the Corinthian church reminds us of the meal's holiness and the importance of engaging with it respectfully and frequently. We are transformed as Christ’s body through the meal, becoming more Christlike in our daily lives.
