On Saturday of the Sixth Week of Easter, a reading from a homily on the Song of Songs by Saint Gregory of Nyssa, bishop.
The Song of Songs is a poem—or, rather, a collection of poems—attributed to Solomon, but probably actually dating from some time after the end of the Babylonian exile (538 BC). It is a dramatic poem, in which different voices are heard—the bride and the bridegroom, with the daughters of Jerusalem acting as chorus.
Saint Gregory of Nyssa was a fourth century archbishop of Constantinople and theologian. He is numbered among the Doctors of the Church . He was a contemporary and close friend of Saint Basil the Great.
He is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of the patristic age. He was classically trained orator and philosopher.
