MARRIAGE, IS IT STILL RELEVANT - OR NOT?

For many, marriage is the ultimate public declaration that they are no longer available for dating or "playing the field." It's a binding commitment. Some people though feel that a committed relationship doesn't have to be so formal and often say that marriage is just a piece of paper. Marriage is of course much more than both these positions. There are implications, responsibilities, and many benefits, and challenges, that may not seem so obvious at first. Marriages are by nature a declaration that the union will be a long one - if not permanent. And with that joint growth comes productivity, accumulation and, in the majority of cases, children. Still, as each generation considers itself to be modern. society's norms are often challenged and today it's no different. Is marriage really the basic unit of society, and is marriage truly necessary to hold the fabric of society together? What is wrong with an emphasis on individual pursuits? Do couples have to produce children? Can't these positions be valid, and play a part in defining a new modern world? Good questions indeed.
