NATO has taken over the coordination of Western military aid to Ukraine from the U.S., Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing a knowledgeable source.
The agency noted that the handover is widely viewed as an effort to protect existing support mechanisms for Ukraine in light of the reelection of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Previously, the coordination of military assistance to Kyiv was handled by the U.S.-led Ramstein group, a coalition of about 50 countries named after the American airbase in Germany where its meetings were held.
Responsibility will now shift to a new NATO mission called NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), which is based at a U.S. base in the German town of Wiesbaden.
However, diplomatic sources told Reuters that the change may have a limited impact, as the U.S. remains NATO’s dominant member and Ukraine’s largest arms supplier.
