Friends, we're coming toward the end of the liturgical year, and as is typical, the Church gives us readings of an apocalyptic nature dealing with the end times. “Apocalypse” means “unveiling,” and what’s being unveiled in our readings is the emergence of a new world—not so much in the literal, cosmic sense as in the sense of how we navigate and un…

Second coming We are now to the end of the liturgical year where we get these apocalyptic Gospels, which talk about the end of times. Apocalypse means unveiling, to lift the veil and to reveal what is going to happen, what is behind the curtain that separates us from eternity. We know that Jesus is going to come back one day, every day a bit closer…

God dwells in sacred spaces. In our beautiful cathedral and in the temple of our hearts. This weekend in his homily, Bishop explained the importance of giving to God out of our poverty, and allowing him to work and dwell within our heart so that we may receive God's grace. We tend to feel good when we give our time, energy, and money to a good cause… until it starts to hurt. Resentment can creep in when we give beyond our surplus. The story of the poor widow’s coin reminds us that the primary reason we give is not for our personal fulfillment, nor for economic benefit. The fundamental reason we give is to die to our …

Friends, our first reading is that wonderful story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath, which is a kind of hidden gem in the Old Testament. Like so many of the stories in the Bible, it is very understated, but chock full of spiritual meaning. And it has to do with how we respond—and the strange and surprising ways God might respond to us— when thi…

You may know that I and the various liturgical ministers get ready for Sunday Mass in a little room back in this corner. It's called the prep room.
