Jeffrey Friedman is Associate Professor of Government at Dartmouth College and his research examines the politics and psychology of foreign policy decision-making We spoke to Jeff about why U.S. presidents of both parties tend to adopt more hawkish foreign policies than voters say they want in public opinion surveys; what steps parties, candidates, and voters can take to prevent the commander-in-chief test from distorting US foreign policy; and how Jeff thinks the commander-in-chief test will play out in the upcoming presidential election.
