Lost Cultures: Living Legacies

On the Season 2 debut of Lost Cultures: Living Legacies , we travel to Bermuda, an Atlantic island whose history spans centuries and continents. Once uninhabited, Bermuda became a vital stop in transatlantic trade, a maritime stronghold, and a cultural crossroads shaped by African, European, Caribbean, and Native American influences. Guests Dr. Kristy Warren and Dr. Edward Harris trace its transformation from an uninhabited island to a strategic outpost shaped by shipwrecks, colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the rise and fall of empires. Plus, former Director of Tourism Gary Phillips shares the story of the Gombey tradition, a vibrant performance art rooted in resistance, migration, and cultural fusion. Together, they reveal how Bermuda’s layered past continues to shape its people, culture, and identity today. EPISODE 63 - Billie Kay Asmus - Repaint Studios - PAINTING A GREENER FUTURE WITH THE REPAINT TRAY Meet Billie In early 2021, I started a small business refinishing and refurbishing furniture in my tiny basement studio. I quickly noticed the constant waste I was going through with plastic paint tray liners and wasn't able to reuse them. Naturally, I went to Amazon and Google to find a reusable option and couldn't find one. So then what? Needless to say, I jumped on the opportunity, filed a patent for a reusable silicone paint tray liner with a lid and the Repaint Tray was born. That's when the journey began. Trust me. I get it. I 100% understand the frustration (and joy) of painting. Realistic Expectations Saving you time & creating efficiency. Being an ADHD DIYer entrepreneur mom, time and attention spans are limited. Started a painting project but your kid just woke up from their nap? YEP. I've been there. Need to run off somewhere but don't have time to finish your project? This was me. All the time. Sick of throwing out painting supplies and wasting money and time running back to the store? I 1000% get it! I created the Repaint Tray just for you. DURABLE The Repaint Tray is made of high-quality silicone, making it more durable than disposable thin plastic liners. In fact, one tray could last you a lifetime. SUSTAINABLE Roughly 240 million plastic paint tray liners get tossed into landfills every year. It's time to make a change in a wasteful industry. Not only is the Repaint Tray recyclable, but we strive to translate our eco-conscious efforts throughout the entire company. REUSABLE The best parts of the Repaint Tray are its reusability and convenience. When you're finished, peel away the paint and rinse the rest. Need to step away from your project? Snap on the air-tight lid, keeping your paint fresh and safe away from pets and kids for when you're ready to tackle that project again. https://repaintstudios.com/ ___ https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Check out a great new podcast created just for Dad! E60 - Stephanie Hongo - Creator of Sugarfox - Upcycling Plastics and Trash into Stunning One of a Kind Creations MY NAME IS STEPHANIE HONGO AND I AM AN AMERICAN ARTIST LIVING IN CONNECTICUT. I HAVE BEEN CREATING ART FOR THE MAJORITY OF MY LIFE, BUT IT WASN’T UNTIL I BEGAN MAKING MY TRASH PIECES THAT I REALLY FELT INSPIRED TO CREATE ART FOR ART’S SAKE. I COME FROM A FAMILY OF CREATORS OF ALL KINDS, FROM CARPENTRY TO TYPOGRAPHY WE ALL HAVE AN ABILITY TO “MAKE THINGS.” THIS BROAD RANGE OF ABILITY AND INFLUENCE WAS A BIG FACTOR IN DEVELOPING MY OWN BRAND OF CREATIVITY. WHEN I FIRST BEGAN MAKING THESE PIECES I ATTEMPTED A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS: ANIMALS, FLOWERS, INANIMATE OBJECTS, EVEN SPORTS LOGOS. AS TIME HAS GONE ON HOWEVER, I’VE NARROWED MY INTEREST TO MAKING JUST ANIMALS. THIS MAY CHANGE IN THE FUTURE, BUT FOR NOW IT IS WHAT INSPIRES ME MOST. OCTOPUSES AND ANIMAL BUSTS ARE AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS TO CREATE, AND OCTOPUS PIECES ARE BY FAR THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER. I DO ALL THE WORK ON MY PIECES OUT OF MY HOME. THE STUDIO I HAVE CREATED FOR MYSELF IS ALWAYS FULLY STOCKED WITH A MOUNTAIN OF TRASH AND RECYCLABLES DONATED BY FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND INDIVIDUALS IN MY COMMUNITY. THERE IS FAR TOO MUCH WASTE GENERATED IN THE WORLD. I WANT TO DO MY SMALL PART IN HELPING ELIMINATE SOME OF THAT, WHILE IN TURN MAKING BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE WORKS OF ART. https://www.instagram.com/Sugarfox_art/ https://sugarfox.net/ ___ https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Check out a great new podcast created just for Dad! EPISODE 52 - Our Dad Space Podcast - How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Find Contentment in Your Dad Journey As we close off 2022, we are busy closing down our storefront, still working full-time, completing custom orders and saying goodbye to our walk-in retail customers, we wanted to share some of our other podcasts that we do with our UpCycle Canada Family! I Created Dad Space - a podcast for Dads by Dads to encourage men at any stage along their journey to be a better Dad! I would love if you checked out our podcast and subscribe and share it with those you love! This is a sample episode to give you a taste of the show! We will be back together with Jen to talk about all the updates for UpCycle Canada - looking forward to that as well! So here is a summary of the notes from this episode on Dad Space DAD SPACE EPISODE 27 - How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Find Contentment in Your Dad Journey As a Dad we tend to operate in a provider mode - putting others first, making sure everyone around us is good - but what about us, what if we are not... good. What happens when we "get in the way" of others, we push others hard, maybe too hard. How do we become more mindful of others in our day to day and become aware of moments when putting someone ahead of us and stepping aside can change the course of someone's day - or even their life?! I had one of those days yesterday, I didn't have time to jump into a room I frequent every week, a room on Clubhouse - the social audio app where you can connect with others and speak on hosted "stages" in topics that interest you as a participant. I was busy, I had lots going on that day - no time for Clubhouse - but there was this voice - "You need to be there, you will miss this opportunity, go there now" - but I don't have time, "Go there now" - but the room is almost over, it's too late to jump in on the conversation... "Go there now!" So I did. I joined the room as it was closing, unaware of the topic of the day, I missed all the great speakers, I was as lost as a grade nine student on the first day of classes! With no thought of the result, no consideration really as to if my words mattered in that moment or if they were going to be received, I shared my praise for her instead of me and my thing - I got out of the way. The results were fantastic. I have been mulling this over and sharing this thought with others as we cross paths, they tend to write this down as I shared it with them - so here is my thought for this week, and for you - "If you can't find contentment in the journey, it won't be there to greet you when you arrive" We get in the way by putting ourselves first, even if we are trying to make others around us better - we put great stock in the result, that is where and when we will be content - when I reach this goal, cross that line, hit that target - THEN, and only then will I be content. EPISODE 36 - in this episode, we speak with Scott Anderson from Chop Value - Toronto East! Chop Value collects used chopsticks from area restaurants and repurposes these "disposable" items and recreates amazing creations in the process! Chop Value is a urban harvest used chopsticks. Our resource is what others may view as waste - that means we don’t take virgin materials from our environment. Every chopstick is perfect, slender, and defect-free, making them ideal to develop an innovative engineered material. When designing products, our mindset has been circularity and longevity. This allows us to minimize our environmental impact while creating sustainable solutions engineered to last. We intend to make a difference We are completely transparent with our efforts to leave a climate positive footprint throughout our entire process. Our hope is to help you make more conscious decisions by sharing how we source our materials, how we process them, and what you can do with your products' end of life. Join us in making the circular economy the new norm. Founder's note: Why I dream about chopsticks. Not too long ago, I tried to apply my wood engineering and stereotypical “German efficiency thinking” (not my quote) to tackle the wood and construction waste in Vancouver, Canada. A seminar that presented the research results and potential industry know-how for value-added materials, unfortunately, did not resonate much with industry leaders. It was frustrating, but at the same time eye-opening. I realized that in order to prove sustainable business concepts that rely on under-utilized resource supply, there must be thought leaders who show its viability. It had to be interesting, something easy to comprehend, and something that elicits emotions towards the problem of linear economy and our vast amount of waste. I would need to develop a process that creates innovative, highly value-added, and appealing products from a relatable resource. And that is how Chop Value was born. Fast forward 10 million chopsticks - we have presented our Microfactory concept in more than 10 countries, with media covered in more than 35. For me, we’ve moved beyond proving that we have built a viable, carbon-negative manufacturing business out of discarded chopsticks, and now it's time to expand this concept globally. Our story resonates with people. We believe that we have the responsibility to educate, inspire, and set an example that resource efficiency thinking should simply be the norm. - Felix Böck Chop Value - Toronto East Chop Value - main site ___ For more about our business please visit https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Podcast created by True Media Solutions Have a podcast and need a great website? Episode 35 - Fast and Slow Fashion Why Upcycled fashion? Reduce Carbon emissions, Greenhouse Effect, waste, water usage, and pollution. Increase personal style, local & independent business, slow fashion, shopping intentionally, and garment lifespan. Our Story. We are the alternative to fast fashion. Our Vision. Cultivating the upcycled fashion community. Our Mission. Promoting and raising awareness for upcycled fashion. Fast fashion is cheap, trendy clothing & accessories that relies on the exploitative business model of getting the newest styles to market as fast as possible so consumers can purchase them while they are still at the height of their popularity, then discard them after a few wears when the trend inevitably changes. Let’s put overconsumption into perspective: The world now consumes about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year ( 400% more than two decades ago). We buy 5x more clothing than our grandparents did. The fast fashion market is expected to grow 19% over the next 5 years. On average, each person in the US buys 35 lbs of clothes per year. https://www.reclypt.com/ ___ For more about our business please visit https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Podcast created by True Media Solutions Have a podcast and need a great website? EPISODE 31 - Happy Earth Day! Super thrilled to share this episode with you! We have the creator and host of the new Documentary Movie - Scrap. Ten years in the making, 4 years of filming, travel, zoom calls and many hours of effort has resulted in a movie that brings to light the amazing salvaging, upcycling and restoration efforts to divert items from the landfill! We sit down with the writer, director and producer - Stacey Tenenbaum and get some of the behind the scenes access to the process and the result of her movie! The Industrial Age left us with refuse too vast to bury and impossible to ignore. Earth's resources are finite, yet after serving their short-lived purpose, our cars, appliances and electronics takes centuries to decay. These rusting skeletal remains, especially machines that shaped the landscape and our ability to move within it, are valued objects for those willing to reclaim them. A South Dakota farmer transforms oxidized agricultural machinery into beautiful sculptures that reflect the natural world, while across the ocean, British phone booths are painstakingly restored to their former glory. Whether it be living in abandoned aircraft husks on Bangkok's outskirts or transforming freighter ships into architectural wonders, the human capacity to revitalize obsolete artifacts is inspiring. Beneath the rust and flaking paint of these sensitive vignettes is the scale of its subject matter. Soaring aerial images immerse us in post-apocalyptic landscapes that restore faith in a "waste not, want not" world. Alexander Rogalski Scrap has partnered with CNIB's Phone It Forward program for their screenings and encourages audiences to donate eligible older cell phones at the theatre. The donated phones will be used to help provide a refurbished smartphone to someone who is blind or partially sighted. Donators will be issued a tax receipt. Episode 3 - The History of Earth Day Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to thrive! That’s why each year on April 22, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation. By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, we’re making our world a happier, healthier place to live. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe. You can celebrate and protect the planet at the same time. Check out these Earth Day ideas to help save the planet any time of year. BE A PLANET HERO! • In its lifetime, one reusable bag can prevent the use of 600 plastic bags. • Recycling one can of soda will save enough energy to power a tv for three hours. • Shutting down a computer when it's not in use cuts the energy consumption by 85 percent. • For every mile walked instead of driven, nearly one pound of pollution is kept out of the air. “There’s a way to do it better — find it.” – Thomas Edison https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2022/ ___ For more about our business please visit https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Podcast created by True Media Solutions Have a podcast and need a great website? EPISODE 23 On this episode of The UpCycle Canada Podcast we sit down with a creative maker here in Canada that is doing her part to reduce landfill and textile waste! Meet Gemma Smith from Re-Vive the TEE! The Re-Vive the TEE Story: An affordable and Canadian way to upcycle old clothing that celebrates life, achievements, and adventures. Simply place your order, choose your t-shirts, fleece colour, and mail them to us. Within a short amount of time, you’ll have a handmade quilt to hold close, and memories to hold even closer! Hello everyone! My name is Gemma. I’m a mother of three, wife to a very supportive husband, south of England native who emigrated to Canada, and head designer behind RE-Vive the TEE. I discovered my passion for sewing after having children and wanting to be able to stay home with them, while earning an income. So, for the past 10 years I have been creating special memory keepsake items for family and friends. The idea initially came as my children grew far too quick and I was having a hard time getting rid of their baby clothing. I started to think of how I could keep their baby clothes in a way that wouldn’t take up unnecessary storage space, and I would get to enjoy and look at them often, reminiscing on the baby age. My first ever quilt was created from an assortment of my daughters clothing. After sharing a photo of it on Facebook, I began to receive inquires from other moms who were interesting in preserving their children’s clothing through a custom, handmade quilt. Since then, I have created hundreds of baby quilts for clients across the globe! Fast forward to 2020, I received more and more inquiries and decided to create a simplified version of my jigsaw quilts; one that is affordable and symmetrical, created from equal size blocks in standard sizing. By doing this, we were able to provide a modernized version of our traditional quilts that are of the same quality. We've also expanded our product line to include larger 16" squares, baby toddler 6" squares and a hybrid combination of 12" and 6" squares. From sports tees, to travel tees, concert shirts, and those from lost loved ones, I love sewing and helping individuals tell their stories with custom made quilts! My personal favourite quilt to make is the memorial quilts for loved ones who have passed because of the comfort these quilts brings for their families, which gives me my “why” and my feeling of purpose behind RE-Vive the TEE. Our quilts are all constructed with the quality threads and backings, are super warm and extremely durable. Whether your purchasing your quilt for a personal gift or for a loved one, we guarantee you will absolutely adore it! So far, we have two full time members of staff lovingly creating your quilts from my home based studio in Calgary. Very near future plans include expanding into a new larger manufacturing space where we can employ other makers to help produce these wonderful keepsakes. Don’t let old t-shirts collect dust - have them made into a quilt that you can put on display and enjoy every day! Together, we can RE-Vive those TEE’s into conversational pieces that invite trips down memory lane. https://www.revivethetee.ca/ ___ For more about our business please visit https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Podcast created by True Media Solutions Have a podcast and need a great website? EPISODE 22 Dave and Jen welcome Alex Morgan - creator of the unique app, EcoRate - an app that allows you to find, rate and review local cafes in your community rewarding cafes that are actively doing business in a way that promotes eco-friendly, earth friendly practices! EcoRate Mission Empower people to reduce consumer waste using actionable community-driven data. Problem Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face today. The irresponsible way we consume products leads to heaps of unnecessary waste. In addition to the environmental fallout, unsustainable habits often also lead to higher costs for consumers and businesses, and lower-quality products. Many people want to make environmentally sound decisions but lack the information and community support they need to do so. Solution EcoRate puts the right information and research at people's fingertips so they can make environmentally informed decisions effortlessly. As this gradually guides more consumers to the most eco-friendly businesses it will incentivize the right behaviors, and support businesses that make sustainable decisions. How it Works So how does this all work? When you want to go to a cafe, search for it here and we'll show you how environmentally friendly your cafe options are. Our ratings are an estimate of how successful each cafe is at eliminating the use of unnecessary packaging and other material waste. While you're at the cafe, you can leave a review that we'll use to further refine the cafe's rating. Our reviews consist of a small set of specific questions about how your order was served and the general practices at the cafe. This gives our rating system an objective basis. You'll also have fun along the way, so join our community today! Ratings & Reviews We process reviews from our community to make an estimate of how eco-friendly cafes' consumer-facing practices are. For example, does a cafe primarily serve drinks in reusable mugs or disposable cups, and do they allow customers bring a thermos? To turn reviews into a rating out of 5, we apply estimates for the environmental cost of producing, cleaning, and disposing of heavily used items. We continually update our environmental cost model as new research becomes available. Impact We broadcast your reviews to the whole community, empowering you to have an impact well beyond making your own consumption sustainable. We'll know we succeeded together when the least environmentally responsible cafe chains realize that they need their sustainability-minded clientele, and improve their ways to get us back! We are pleased to share the story of a fellow upcycler that inspires us! Please welcome Samantha Hulst from Junebird.ca Samantha's story... If you’re like me, a parent that is troubled by the amount short use and “disposable” toys on the market, then you are in the right place. Children's toys and accessories can be quite expensive, especially given how quickly children develop physically and cognitively. Families need more affordable, sustainable and local options than ever before when purchasing for their babies and children. Upcycling textiles to make baby and children's toys and accessories gives people the option. Fabrics are also diverted from landfills, giving them a fresh lease on life. At the outset of the pandemic, I was at a loss regarding how to procure things needed to comfort a newborn baby, while also attempting to meet the demands of a developing toddler. Then it dawned on me; I could use garments from around the house that have been outgrown and worn out! Despite my postpartum challenges, I was motivated when I came up with the concept of crafting products out of upcycled textiles We invite you to have a look around and discover what has been created! Be inspired! Hear how Samantha battled through some pretty dark days, hear the joy in her heart as she shares her journey, finding her passion and how she makes a difference in this world upcycling materials from the landfill! Salvage Dawgs - TV Series: After eight years, 11 seasons and 143 episodes, the reality show with Roanoke roots, Salvage Dawgs , has come to an end. Mike Whiteside and Robert Kulp said Salvage Dawgs far exceeded their expectations, and the series lasted much longer than anyone expected. And while it might not have ended exactly as they would have planned, they say it was about time to wrap it up. “We’ve kind of figured out, now that we’ve stopped filming, that there’s life after that,” Kulp said. “And it’s working out pretty well.” “You know, it’s okay with me,” Whiteside said, “because Robert’s starting to get gray hair now. So I think that’s a perfect catalyst for change.” But Black Dog Salvage isn’t going anywhere, and the hosts of Salvage Dawgs will continue to interact with their audience through social media. “Do we have Salvage Dawgs the movie to look forward to?” we asked “Yeah, it’ll be coming out on YouTube,” Whiteside joked. “Yeah Super 8,” Kulp said. Black Dog Salvage has reopened after a temporary closure after the pandemic hit, and like other small businesses, the owners are hoping their customers will return. The main location in Roanoke has high ceilings and more than 40,000 square feet, plenty of space for social-distancing. EPISODE 47 - Director of Operations for Earth Wise Architectural Salvage - Aaron Blanchard joins us from Seattle, WA on this episode of The UpCycle Canada Podcast! Aaron braves the Tacoma to Seattle commute daily to help salvage, merchandise, and keep things on track. RESPECT THE PAST - SUSTAIN THE FUTURE As a demolition contractor, Kurt was in charge of demolishing houses and buildings. While preparing for demolition, he’d walk through the buildings and notice all of the beautiful architectural pieces, hardware, and lighting that was going to be crunched with the house and sent to the landfill. He decided to strip these pieces from the homes and save them for future projects. He stored these items in his garage and held small sales. As these sales became more frequent people started to call him looking for specific items. In 1991 Earthwise was officially born. We set up shop in the SoDo district of Seattle. In July 2014 we opened our second location in East Tacoma at a vintage sawmill. It is at this location where we mill our vintage beams into all the re-milled lumber you can find at the stores. Earthwise opened our third location in Aberdeen WA in July 2018. We are excited to be offering our salvage services and reclaimed materials all along Western Washington. https://ewsalvage.com/ ___ For more about our business please visit https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Podcast created by True Media Solutions Have a podcast and need a great website? EPISODE 46 - Instead of tossing materials from her 1850's home reno into a bin and shipping it off to a landfill, Joce had an idea - a plan - to take unwanted reno materials and repurpose them into amazing creations that capture the history of the materials! Please join us in welcoming Joce Greenwood from The Salvage Life - here is bit about Joce and her business! Welcome to The Salvage Life. I’m Joce, a passionate woodworker, DIYer and lover of all things salvage. I grew up with a love of creating. My dad was a talented woodworker, my mother a beautiful folk artist. We spent family holidays on the road going 'antiquing' and although I swore I would have a modern home one day I now own a home built in 1856 that needs a lot of love and is full of repurposed furniture and re-loved items. I just love things that have history. About 5 years ago my husband signed me up for Carpentry 101 (thinking it was the cabinetry class I wanted). It turned out to be the best mistake because I loved it and the first thing I did was demo our sons' room...and that is when I found LATH. It was too beautiful to send to the landfill so we took it off board by board and stored it. In March 2019 I made a stylized union jack mosaic for my husband and I was hooked! I love the process of choosing the different wood tones and textures to create the patterns and working piece by piece until the design plan comes together. I love that it's salvaged wood with history that gets a new life. When I think about the progression of my wood art I am most proud of the connections that I have made through my custom work and the unique pieces that I have been trusted to create. I work part time as a furniture restyler at Mango Reclaimed and spend the rest of my time working on projects in our home and following my passion to create sustainable art as The Salvage Life. #thesalvagelife #lathart #reclaimedwood #findyourrepurpose #woodworker #DIYer https://www.instagram.com/thesalvagelife/ https://www.facebook.com/thesalvagelife.ca/ https://mangopaintinc.com/ https://mangoreclaimed.com/ ___ For more about our business please visit…

EPISODE 42 - Welcome back to The UpCycle Canada Podcast! Imagine if you would, what life would be like with less clutter, more organization and less waste! Imagine a life with what you need, where you need it and nothing extra to clog up your home, clutter your life and weigh you down. Are you looking to add more joy, rest and happiness to your life - sure you are, but do you have room for these great things to be added to your life? Before you go out and buy a bunch of storage boxes to put your stuff into, let's loom at the stuff itself and make a decision as to what we need to live and what we can live without! If you need an organized life Rebekah is here for you! MEET REBEKAH Rebekah holds a degree in fashion design from Parsons School of Design, and for many years worked as a graphic designer. Rebekah’s passion for the environment and helping people improve their lives drove her to change careers and create Balagan Be Gone. Balagan is Hebrew for "Chaos". Rebekah’s straightforward approach to managing “stuff” and her no-nonsense ability to get to the heart of what is important combines with her people skills to help people get control of their lives through organization. By helping her clients streamline everything from clothing to papers to books and household goods, they have found that they get the most out of their possessions and stress less about managing it all. Her experience in moving her own household several times, in combination with her organization planning and doing has led her to specialize in working with clients who are facing a move, whether upsizing or downsizing. She has found that her skills extend to helping others with time management, as well. Rebekah uses her professional design skills to help her clients create organized and beautiful spaces for themselves and their families. In addition to eliminating “balagan” for her clients, her sense of style and function make the new “balagan-free” space one that everyone can enjoy. A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Rebekah lives with her husband and three children in Israel. https://balaganbegone.com/ ___ For more about our business please visit https://upcyclecanada.ca/ Podcast created by True Media Solutions Have a podcast and need a great website?
