Maggie Mobley shares a personal story from her childhood, reflecting on a baseball game interrupted by a storm, where her mother’s protective instincts became a powerful example of how God provides safety in life's challenges. She emphasizes that we must identify the true enemy in our struggles, which is not physical but spiritual, and encourages the congregation to "armor up" with the full protection of God to withstand these battles. Using Ephesians 6 as a foundation, she elaborates on the importance of prayer, humility, and relying on God's strength instead of our own during difficult times. Ultimately, she invites everyone to adopt a posture of prayer and trust in God's victory amidst life's storms. Send us a text…

In the sermon, Shawn shares the story of Kylie, who realized after nurturing a fake plant for two years that it was not real, paralleling this to how we often invest time and energy into "fake vines" in life that promise satisfaction but ultimately don't nourish us. He emphasizes that true sustenance comes from being connected to Jesus, the "true vine," and warns against the allure of fake sources of meaning, such as self-centeredness, politics, or relationships. Shawn encourages listeners to examine their lives and identify where they turn when they are struggling—reminding them that only Jesus can provide the real joy, peace, and purpose they seek. Finally, he calls for individuals to embrace the true source of life during communion, urging them to detach from unhealthy attachments and reconnect with God. Shawn Green shares a profound message about the importance of prioritizing connection with Jesus over mere productivity through the story of Mary and Martha. While Martha busies herself with hospitality for Jesus and his disciples, Mary chooses to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to his teachings, illustrating that being present with Christ is more valuable than being productive for him. Green emphasizes that genuine connection with Jesus is essential for transforming our lives and that it is by abiding in him that we bear fruit, rather than through our own efforts. He challenges the notion of performance-driven faith, reminding us that God's love and connection come freely, irrespective of our accomplishments. Have you noticed that a lot of people are upset and angry about a lot of things? Hi, I’m Allen Burris from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church My habit is to read the Bible first thing every morning. A few days ago, I came across some simple but jarring words, especially in a cultural context of provocation and angry expressions. These words are found near the end of Ephesians 4. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Will you join me in thinking about these words and striving to live them out? We live in a more divided world than ever. From politics to identity issues to generational gaps, our culture loves to highlight all the ways that we are different from one another. But Jesus offers a different way. A better way. My name is Quentin and I’m one of the pastors here at Sherwood Oaks. Jesus came onto the scene in a time full of many of the same issues we face today. His people were divided amongst themselves, and society was full of gaps in status, wealth, and culture. But he gently guided his followers into a life that modeled true unity by loving those that others had deemed “unworthy”. In his final hours, he prayed these powerful words over those who would become The Church: “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” Jesus called his Church to live in unity so that others would see them and say “I want that kind of life!” We’ve got a special opportunity coming up to catch a larger glimpse of this life on September 22nd. Join us and 10 other area churches for B-Town Worship Night from 4-8pm at Switchyard Park. It’s a night filled with food, laughter, games, and worship all united as one Body with no other agenda than the Name of Jesus. Send us a text…

I recently spent a lot of time watching the Olympics and the amazing athletes that participated. I watched many track and field events and was always in awe of the runners and their speed, endurance, and tenacity. When I watched them race it got me thinking about how we each run our own race, even if it’s not on an Olympic stage. Hi, I’m Maggie Mobley from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. Hebrews 12:1-2 says “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Each of us runs our own race. Your race looks different than anyone else around you, because your story and your gifts and your relationship with God are unique, they are unlike anyone else. This is our one and only life and the one and only chance we get to run our race. When you feel like quitting, persevere and stay on track. If you stumble or fall or trip over a hurdle, get up and fix your eyes on Jesus. Our gold medal comes when we enter the gates of heaven. And because of Jesus, we all have the opportunity to win gold. Keep running your race and pursuing God, and trust that he is with you every step of the way. Send us a text…

My dad died recently. He lived 92 years and was married to my mom for 70 of those years. He was a good, faithful follower of Christ. Hi, I’m Allen Burris from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, and I want to share some thoughts about grief. Grief resides between the pain of loss and the promises of God, which include life after death. Grief is a place of hope—a hope built on faith in a loving God. Jeremiah, the prophet, also grieved. As he wept, he kept a hopeful perspective because of the Lord’s faithful love. I find his words helpful; perhaps you will too. He says in Lamentations 3: "I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord ever ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!’" We have hope because we have Jesus. I hope you have a good day! Let us know if we can help you. Send us a text…

In this episode of our series "Thine is the Kingdom," we delve into the second week of our exploration of the eternal kingdom of God, as inspired by Jesus' teachings. The sermon begins by acknowledging the chaos and stress that often permeate our lives, inviting listeners to find sanctuary and rest in God's presence. We reflect on the historical context of Israel's longing for a king and how their desire for earthly leadership led to further chaos, yet God remained faithful, promising a Messiah who would reign in justice. The sermon focuses on Mark 1:14-15, where Jesus announces the arrival of the kingdom of God, not as a political or military power, but as a transformative force in the hearts and lives of individuals. Jesus calls us to "repent and believe the good news," urging a radical shift in our lives from self-centeredness to God-centeredness. This message is not just about knowledge but action—turning from our ways to embrace God's will. Listeners are challenged to consider how Jesus might disrupt their lives, urging them to pray for divine intervention in areas they hold onto tightly. The sermon emphasizes that following Jesus is inherently disruptive but ultimately rewarding, as it aligns us with God's kingdom and brings true peace and joy. I woke up today feeling especially thankful for the people that God has put into my life. These people have helped me in so many ways – they have been there for me to offer support, to lift me up, to encourage me, and to draw me further into my relationship with Christ. Hi, I’m Maggie Mobley from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. In 1929 the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade displayed the longest balloon on record. It was a 178 foot dragon designed by Tony Sarg. Almost a century later, and this massive balloon still holds the title. The dragon balloon was enormous, and it took dozens of people to keep the balloon safe, under control, and on the right path. Similar to the balloon, we need people in our life that we can count on to keep us safe and on the right path, especially on our spiritual path. The Bible tells us that we can and should count on other people, and that we should ask others to keep us accountable. Exodus 17:12 says “When Moses’ arms got tired... Aaron and Hur held his hands up. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Moses’ hands remained steady until sunset.” This is a wonderful picture of Moses seeking help from others to keep him safe and accountable for the work he was doing for God. We are all in need of others to keep us accountable in our walk with Jesus. We are brothers and sisters in Christ, each with two hands. One hand to help ourselves, and our other hand to help others. Don’t be afraid to ask for someone else’s hand when your own gets tired, or to offer your hand to others. We have so much to be thankful for, and the people that God has put in our life is a reason to give thanks to Him. Send us a text…

Who do you resent right now? Is there a relationship you have that, when you think about it, it gives you a knot in your stomach? Hi, I’m Noah Saylor here at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. When we look at the Beatitude of the Peacemaker, Jesus says that those who make peace with others will be called ‘children of God.’ Just like how kids resemble their parents, we demonstrate God’s character when we work to restore harmony among our friends, family, and community. James chapter 3 affirms this by saying that, “wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, and gentle…” So when you have that person you know who just gives you feelings of frustration or resentment, go to that person now and make peace. It will hurt your pride, and you can’t control how they will respond. But this is an essential aspect to living out the life Jesus commands us to live. Who do you need to make peace with? In his sermon, Shawn emphasizes the surprising nature of Jesus' final beatitude, which states that those who are persecuted for righteousness will be blessed. This teaching challenges the expectation that following Jesus would lead to universal approval, instead preparing believers for opposition and ridicule. Shawn distinguishes between genuine persecution for one’s faith and the consequences of poor behavior, urging that true followers of Christ must embrace hardships that come from living out their faith. Ultimately, he encourages the congregation to sacrificially live for Jesus, noting that every small act of faithfulness in the face of persecution brings them closer to the joy and glory of the kingdom of heaven. In his sermon, Noah discusses the importance of being a peacemaker as highlighted in the seventh Beatitude from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, emphasizing that true peace requires effort and can often be messy. He draws parallels between conflict resolution and cleaning, asserting that while the process may seem daunting, the satisfaction of achieving peace is worth it. Noah underscores the distinction between peacemakers and peacekeepers, noting that genuine peacemaking involves confronting and resolving conflicts rather than avoiding them. Ultimately, he encourages listeners to embrace their role as peacemakers, reflecting the character of God and to prioritize relationships over being right, reminding them that the journey of reconciliation is an ongoing process. Pete Rose, in my opinion, one of the greatest baseball players ever died recently. Pete Rose was my boyhood hero. I loved him and loved the Big Red Machine–the Cincinnati Reds. Hi, I am Allen Burris with a short message for you. Pete Rose was called Charlie Hustle, and I wanted to be like him. When I was 11, our little league team won the championship, and I received The Hustle award. It was a highlight of my youth. As time went on, I was disappointed to learn of Pete’s flaws and mistakes, but it did not, in my mind, diminish his amazing baseball abilities. It, however, did provide perspective–one that is important to me. There is no perfect person. Be careful about idolizing people. Psalm 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Today, some trust in politicians, presidents, preachers, pop stars, and popular influencers. I say, learn from them; take what is good. But be careful. There is only One Who deserves whole-hearted trust and allegiance, and His name is Jesus. I hope you have a good day! Send us a text…

Matt shares insights from his extensive preaching experience, emphasizing the importance of being "pure in heart" as described by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. He explains that purity is not merely about external behaviors or appearances, as the Pharisees believed, but about the internal condition of the heart, highlighting contempt as a key obstacle to purity. Matt challenges the audience to invite God to search their hearts, urging them to eliminate contempt and seek a genuine, experiential relationship with God. Ultimately, he encourages everyone to pursue a deeper understanding of what it means to see God in their daily lives and experience His presence. Send us a text…

The word Abide means to remain or to live. In the Bible, the word abide is used to describe a deep and unwavering commitment to God and His word. Hi, I’m Maggie Mobley from Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. In John 15 Jesus uses a beautiful metaphor of a vine and branches to talk to us about our relationship with him. He says “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. Then verse 5 in the Message paraphrase translation says “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relationship intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing.” Jesus is the vine, God is the gardener who cares for the branches, and we are the branches. So we use this metaphor to see how we should be connected to Jesus. We should be asking ourselves if we are cultivating a deep and unwavering commitment to God and His word. It can be hard to live a life abiding in God – life is hard, life moves fast, and things can easily get in the way of making God a priority. But if you take the time to experience God in the way that He longs to know us, then you will experience the true, natural, and organic taste of God’s presence. Don’t allow life to get in the way of taking time and effort to grow your roots deep in connection with God so that you can truly experience all that He has for you. Abide with Him. Send us a text…
