If you think pharmacy is still a “one drug for one disease” model, think again. People don’t get sick in a single silo, so why would we treat them that way? That’s why pharmacists today are unleashing the power of repurposing a drug at a lower dosage to get a benefit. Sebastian Denison, a compounding pharmacist on the frontlines of this shift, is the perfect person to have this conversation with! Using medications like low-dose Naltrexone, we’re able to tap into multiple mechanisms at once, reduce inflammation, calm an overactive immune system, and support whole-body healing! For too long, modern medicine has focused on treating isolated symptoms, prescribing one drug for one receptor, one diagnosis, one problem. But the body doesn’t work that way. Everything is connected. This new model of pharmacy looks at the entire person and provides multifaceted solutions. In this episode, we explore why it’s time to stop treating disease in isolation and how forward-thinking pharmacists are using multi-targeted, low-dose therapies to reach far beyond a single symptom or receptor site. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode -Why “one drug, one receptor” is an outdated myth The days of single-function prescriptions are over. How are today’s compounds designed to work across systems, supporting your body’s natural healing intelligence? -Modulation not suppression Inflammation in the body is like a dial, you have to find the right balance. How do we pull away from dysfunctional inflammation and get back to healthy inflammation? -The problem with extremes (even healthy ones) In excess, even the healthiest activities can be detrimental to your health and lead to chronic inflammation. How does living in extremes lead to a stressed-out body? Guest Bio Sebastian Denison, BScPharm, RPh, is a PCCA Training and Education Pharmacist who received his BSc in Pharmacy at the University of British Columbia. He worked at Northmount Pharmacy in North Vancouver for 11 years specializing in BHRT, veterinarian, pain and sports compounding practice. He also was the Manager of Pharmacy Operations with the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic/Paralympic Games, and then the Manager of the Whistler Olympic Village Polyclinic Pharmacy. Sebastian works with both the U.S and Canadian C3 education teams, the Pharmacy Student education team, and also does pharmacist education symposiums and events. Ever feel like your body is working against you—like you’re doing everything “right,” but you’re still exhausted, inflamed, or dealing with weird symptoms no one can explain? You might be dealing with an autoimmune disease, something that affects more Americans than cancer and heart disease combined. And yet, autoimmune diseases are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. And here’s what’s rarely talked about: they can develop silently for years before symptoms ever appear. That’s why understanding autoimmune disease requires more than just managing symptoms. It demands that we look deeper at root causes like gut health, immune dysfunction, nutrient depletion, and chronic stress. In this episode, I dive into the mysterious world of autoimmune disease. I share why your immune system (meant to protect you) gets confused and starts attacking your own body. I also dig into practical strategies to support your immune system, how to spot early warning signs, and how to avoid falling into the trap of chasing symptoms. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode -Autoimmune conditions don't happen overnight Autoimmune conditions develop over years and even decades. The problem is, they shut down the immune system, which we don’t want. What drugs and supplements calm down the immune system? -The good news about autoimmune conditions You don’t have to feel helpless. Inflammation may be the body’s own protective process that helps us heal, but it’s something we don’t want too much of. In the right amount, it’s essential. It helps us recover from a broken bone, fight off infections, and calm down irritated skin. In excess, inflammation can actually trigger the very diseases it was meant to protect us from. We’re not just talking about a swollen ankle or a red rash. What I’m talking about here is chronic inflammation, a low-grade, long-term state of internal stress that quietly fuels disease in the background. Chronic inflammation creates what’s known as oxidative stress in our bodies. I often compare it to rust. A little rust is normal, just like some inflammation is part of healing. But when it becomes constant, and your body doesn’t switch off the inflammatory response, that “rust” starts to do a lot of damage. The problem is - our modern lifestyles, poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, and exposure to toxins are all major contributors to this chronic inflammatory state. That’s where hs-CRP comes in. It offers a powerful glimpse into your body’s current and future risk of disease. Think of it as an internal weather forecast. It doesn’t just show what’s happening now, it can predict what’s coming if nothing changes. The good news? Inflammation is reversible, and that means many chronic diseases are preventable. Tracking hs-CRP is the key to identifying inflammation and getting ahead of it. So what causes chronic inflammation? What can we do to bring it down? In this episode, I’m breaking down what inflammation is, why it matters more than most people realize, and what steps you can take to protect your health for the long haul. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode -Too much inflammation is bad for you Our bodies need inflammation to fight infection, but what happens when it becomes our default state? -The early warning system for inflammation Most medical practitioners aren’t looking for inflammation. How do you get them to start testing for it? -How to reduce oxidative stress From stress to diet and medication, our lifestyles can increase inflammation. What can we do to get it under control? About Your Host Steve Hoffart is an award-winning pharmacist, entrepreneur, speaker and podcaster. Thanks to the shortcomings of traditional healthcare, women have been led to believe that menopause is a time when their bodies fall apart, and there's nothing they can do about it. The sleepless nights, stubborn weight gain, mood swings, and discomfort? That’s just a “natural” part of aging, they’re told. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Menopause isn’t the end. It’s a powerful opportunity to reclaim your health, elevate your quality of life, and confidently step into this next chapter. And the most effective way to do that? Hormone replacement therapy. The symptoms you experience before and during menopause are your body’s way of signaling change, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through them. Nearly every system in your body is influenced by hormones, and when levels start to shift, you feel it everywhere. The good news? Those hormones can be safely and effectively replaced, and that will make a huge difference in how you feel throughout menopause. How do you use hormone replacement to improve your health? What do you do if your doctor is blowing off your symptoms? In this episode, I break down what’s really happening to your hormones during menopause, how HRT can help, and what to do if your doctor dismisses your concerns. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode -Your body on menopause 3 main hormones affect how you feel during menopause. How do they change as you age? -Don’t guess, test Everyone’s menopause experience is different. How do you make sure you’re getting quality care tailored to your specific concerns? -Drive your health bus Not every doctor is trained to help menopausal patients. What do you do if your practitioner is blowing your symptoms off or refusing to put you on HRT? -It’s not just hormones There are many pillars to being healthy in menopause. What else do you need to optimize to get the best results? About Your Host Steve Hoffart is an award-winning pharmacist, entrepreneur, speaker and podcaster. Aging is inevitable, and every woman goes through menopause. But your hormonal journey and how your body responds? That’s unique to you. The problem is, a lot of what we’ve been told about menopause— even in clinics, pharmacies, and doctor’s offices—just isn’t accurate. Traditional healthcare often treats menopause like a one-size-fits-all situation, missing the mark on the unique needs of every woman’s body. That’s why a personalized approach isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s the key to feeling your best through this transition. Hormones play a major role in shaping your menopause experience. They don’t just impact hot flashes and mood swings; they help maintain your vision, memory, heart health, mobility, and more. Ultimately, when hormones are properly prescribed, administered correctly, and metabolized well, many of the common side effects of menopause can be managed—or even completely mitigated. What does traditional healthcare get wrong about menopause? How can menopausal women optimize their hormones and achieve wellness? Why do we have to take a personalized approach to hormone replacement? In this episode of The Trusted Pharmacist, I’m joined by author, speaker, and anti-aging expert Dr. Pamela Smith. We dive into the myths and misconceptions surrounding menopause, the critical role of hormones in overall health, and why a one-size-fits-all approach to hormone replacement simply doesn’t work. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode -Why hot flashes are such a hot topic Menopause used to be something women couldn’t talk about. So why is it suddenly everywhere now? What’s changed, and why are we finally opening up about it? -The truth about estrogen There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about estrogen. What’s the real story? How does it truly affect a woman’s body? -Synthetic hormones vs. natural hormones When it comes to hormone replacement, the term “natural” is heavily misused. What does the word mean in medicine and pharmacy? What kind of hormones should women take? GLP-1 medications have quickly taken the world by storm—and for good reason. Just last year, over 90 million prescriptions for these medications were filled, and that number is only growing. Here’s why. In my years as a pharmacist, I’ve never seen a drug like this. Medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro have revolutionized weight loss treatments, offering dramatic results for many. But before you jump in, it’s important to understand that these drugs are not a quick fix. Without a solid plan, you could set yourself up for disappointment. One key thing to know if you're considering a GLP-1: maintaining your lean mass is essential. And if you're just looking to drop a few pounds, this likely isn’t the best option for you. So, who stands to benefit the most from GLP-1 medications? How can you ensure long-term success while using them? In this episode, I’ll cover everything you need to know about these powerful drugs—from how they work to the risks and benefits you should be aware of. In the realm of getting your blood work done, there are two categories of tests. The ones that are designed to identify illness, and the ones that help you proactively prevent inflammation and maintain wellness. Unfortunately, the typical panels most people get fall into the former category. They don’t give you in-depth data about your true health status and they miss great opportunities for disease prevention. Your annual checkup doesn’t have to be just another routine; it can be an opportunity to ensure you're truly thriving. If you add 6 essential tests such as fasting insulin and vitamin D levels, you get a fuller picture of your health, and you can make small tweaks that could make all the difference. These markers don’t come in your standard blood panels, you have to ask your doctor for them specifically, but I believe they are worth it. In this episode, I share how you can use blood work to proactively manage your health. I’ll explain how to ask your doctor for the right tests, and why taking a functional medicine approach is key to unlocking your body’s full potential. I also discuss how inflammation markers like HS-CRP are often overlooked, yet they play a major role in predicting disease. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Normal vs. optimal - When you’re doing blood work for wellness, a normal blood panel just doesn’t cut it. How do we test blood with health optimization in mind? The most important blood markers for disease prevention - Preventing inflammation is the key to warding off disease. How can we make sure our blood work can spot early signs of inflammation? Blood work to find illness vs. blood work to keep you healthy - How do we set up a foundation of wellness instead of waiting till we’re sick to get our blood work done? A quick glance at today's healthcare landscape reveals one undeniable truth. The system isn’t just a little off-track - it’s in a full-blown crisis. From the way doctors are trained to the ingredients in everything we eat, drink and use, the current system isn’t built for wellness. In fact, in some cases, it only serves to make us sicker. Our food is irresistible, addictive but lacking any real nutritional value. The so-called healthy supplements that should help us are adding to the problem. Constraints on healthcare practitioners make it impossible for them to provide a holistic personalized approach. Then of course there’s all the noise and misinformation about health which makes it really confusing to know what to do. How can we navigate all these factors, learn how our bodies truly work and give them what they need to thrive? There are many steps in this process, but getting the right healthcare partner is a start. Pharmacists like myself can help you give your body everything it needs to function optimally. That means food, supplements, stress management, sleep and so much more. And that’s why I started this podcast, The Trusted Pharmacist. I want to cut through all the noise and garbage information and help you flip your body’s switch from sick to being able to heal itself. In this episode, I share in detail what to expect in this podcast and my mission to help you achieve and maintain your highest level of health. Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Holistic health vs. symptom management - The way healthcare professionals are trained doesn’t lend to real healing. Why do doctors and pharmacists have such a hard time delivering the best care? A pharmacist who wants you off your meds - How can we take people from sick and medication-reliant to managing your health through diet, lifestyle science, and supplements? How your healthy plate was hijacked - Hippocrates said food should be our medicine, how did our current healthcare and food production systems make it harmful instead?
