Career: FDNY Firefighter

Sarinya’s Personal Mantra: "To your own self, be true"

This week Jaeki & Joann sit down with Sarinya Srisakul about her 14 year career as a firefighter with the FDNY. She is the first-ever Asian Women firefighter in the history of FDNY, which is crazy to think about since FDNY has been around since 1865. Once an art school dropout, Sarinya learned about firefighting when her friend convinced her to attend a FDNY information session. She knew she wanted to be a firefighter after watching a sizzle real of FDNY battling flames around New York. Sarinya started fighting fires with Engine Company 5 in East Village and recently became the first Asian women to become a FDNY Lieutenant for the North Queens area. She also served as the President of the United Women's Firefighters (UWF) for 6 years, who's mission is to promote the interests and welfare of women firefighters and women fire officers in New York City. Sarinya is a tireless servant-leader that makes it her mission to advocate and support women in the FDNY. Through the advocacy work and trainings provided by UWF, the number of women in FDNY has tripled to 100+ (a historic high) over that last decade. Being a firefighter is hard physical work but Sarinya is proving Asian women can excel in this white male-dominated industry.

What you will learn this week:

  • How do you become a firefighter? What tests do you take? What is Fire Academy?
  • How much money does a firefighter make?
  • That is the difference between fire truck and fire engine?
  • How much weight do firefighters carry?
  • How much do firefighters work a week? Can you have a side hustle as a firefighter?
  • Why do you drag people out of buildings when you can carry them?
  • Can women be firefighters? What is the United Women Firefighters and what do they do?
  • How you can better fire proof your home? Tips from a firefighter
