A secret field that summons lightning. A massive spiral that disappears into a salt lake. A celestial observatory carved into a volcano. Meet the wild—and sometimes explosive—world of land art, where artists craft masterpieces with dynamite and bulldozers. In our Season 2 premiere, guest Dylan Thuras, cofounder of Atlas Obscura, takes us off road and into the minds of the artists who literally reshaped parts of the Southwest. These works aren’t meant to be easy to reach—or to explain—but they just might change how you see the world. Land art you’ll visit in this episode: - Double Negative and City by Michael Heizer (Garden Valley, Nevada) - Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson (Great Salt Lake, Utah) - Sun Tunnels by Nancy Holt (Great Basin Desert, Utah) - Lightning Field by Walter De Maria (Catron County, New Mexico) - Roden Crater by James Turrell (Painted Desert, Arizona) Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.…

I don’t know about you, but I’m ALWAYS thinking about programming and coaching Even in my time off, I’m thinking about making myself a better coach, or how to better help the other coaches that I work with and mentor. Now this could be an incredibly extensive list, but what I’m sharing today are 10 of the biggest mistakes I see coaches making TODAY. Some are age-old and I’ve seen them for the better part of two decades, while others I feel like are far more prevalent in this day and age. So sit back, relax, and let’s make sure you’re not making one of these 10 BIG mistakes! The best program designers are great not because of all the stuff they cram into a workout, but because of all the stuff they willfully leave out. – MR This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A huge mistake that not only impacts coaching and cuing, but energy levels as well. The biggest mistake I see young coaches make. Why isometrics (ISO’s) can play a key role in your programs. The tip Lee Taft gave me to better see and understand overall movement. One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to coaches and trainers. How Shiny Object Syndrome is keeping you from writing better programs. Why the “one thing” principle is great for content and social media, but not so much for training real clients and athletes. The power of explaining “Why” to the people you train. What “serial batching” is, and why you should be using it to write better programs in less time. Why every coach should be looking to eliminate things from their programs, versus just adding “more stuff.” Related Links: Complete Coach Certification Program Design Mentorship Level Up Your Program Design with Train Heroic! A few weekends back, I was working full steam ahead at my “other” full time job in life. Now most of you know me as a guy who trains people in the gym and creates content like this, with the goal of making everyone I come into contact with better. But this was my OTHER job…the one where I’m an elite Uber driver and sports dad! And on this particular morning, with a 90 minute drive to beautiful Terre Haute ahead of me, I had A LOT of time to think about business, training and life. And this show is what came from all that! Basically I asked myself a few simple questions: What have I done WELL over the years in my business? In what areas could I improve? And perhaps most importantly… How I can put all of this into a podcast that will help YOU become a better trainer, coach and businessperson? Well this is what I came up with: 10 keys to help YOU run a better business and make more money in 2025. Because let’s be honest here – all of us come into this industry because we want to help people. But in that same breath, many of us don’t know how to take care of OURSELVES from a business or financial perspective. So I really hope this show helps you out – let’s dive in! At certain times in life, long hours of coaching in the gym IS your continuing education. – MR This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: The REAL KEY to running a successful fitness business (that doesn’t necessarily have to DO with business!) Why your continuing education can and should change at different points in your career. The biggest side quest or “shiny” object in fitness business today. Serious question: Should you be considering using DIRECT MAIL to advertise?!?! The real goal of using social media (Hint: it’s not just about more likes!) What you can do right now, TODAY, to start building a stronger business for free. Why your goal shouldn’t be to train professional athletes right out of the gate. How to know what someone really wants from training – and then get them to buy with ease. Rate Increases: How do you pull these off without pissing all your clients and athletes off? Why making it easy to get started with you is crucial to your success! Born into an entrepreneurial family in Ontario, Canada, Brandon Cullen was raised with a front-row seat to hard work and high expectations. Pushed by his father to excel both in life and on the ice, Brandon’s grit landed him a spot in the New York Rangers’ minor league system. But when a career-ending concussion shattered his hockey dreams, everything he’d worked for disappeared overnight. Instead of calling it quits, Brandon turned that adversity into fuel. Determined to create something new, he poured his competitive drive into the fitness world, building the type of gym he wished existed: one focused on aging athletically without the distractions of gimmicks or trends. Teaming up with fellow pro hockey player Kirk Dewaele, Brandon’s first venture was a CrossFit gym, but they quickly saw a gap in the market for a structured, strength-based system. This insight led to MADabolic: a strength-driven gym built on precision, consistency, and science-backed programming, delivering real results for those who crave more. And in this episode we’re going to take the lessons Brandon has learned from building his fitness franchise to help YOU build a better business or personal brand. I got into this industry because I have bit of an ego and want to be known as the best fitness product in the franchising game. The byproduct is we help a lot of people with that. So you have to really isolate what drives you . – Brandon Cullen This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How a perceived gap in the fitness industry lead to the inception of MADabolic. Some of the biggest struggles and hurdles Brandon’s had to face in the franchise game. The power of niching down, and what happens if you don’t. Why marketing strategies have to evolve with changing consumer trends. Finding the right blend between grassroots and paid marketing. The power of ego, and how you can use it in a positive way. Why you can’t market to millenials and Gen Z prospects the same way. The role that grit and resilience play in entrepreneurship. Let’s start with a few questions to ponder… Why are we chasing Internet or social media fame, when the surest way to develop a strong business is by connecting with the family down the road? How is perfectionism holding you back? Or keeping you from taking the next big steps in your development? And is a lack of authenticity keeping you from truly connecting with your ideal customers? Well luckily for you, my guy Jonathan Goodman is here to walk us through all of this – and much more!Jonathan burst on the fitness scene when he originally started the Personal Trainer Development Center (or PTDC) almost 15 years ago. And today he’s a published author multiple times over, with his recent book – The Obvious Choice – dropping in January of this year. And today we’re going to take the principles he outlines in that book and use them to help YOU grow a more robust and resilient fitness business! What’s the 1% that makes YOU different? – Jonathan Goodman This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why we start doing something is often different from why we continue doing it. How exhausting the body can actually energize the mind. Knowledge in fitness has become democratized; now it’s about combining skills. The difference between maximizers and satisfizers. Why understanding your audience is crucial, and why e ndlessly searching for “the best” way to do something is a surefire way to fail. Jon’s thought process on 10,000 hours versus 10,000 iterations to obtain mastery. Why finding your unique value proposition is crucial for standing out in a crowded market. Thoughts on the power of freedom, and why you should i gnore scalable and passive income strategies until you achieve financial freedom. Why everyone can benefit from high value skills like copywriting and public speaking. The power of lifelong learning, and using writing to clarify thoughts. What role should the weight room play in building FASTER athletes? How do you develop a program that’s built on sound biomechanical principles, without falling into the trap of doing corrective exercises for an entire hour? Why he uses video analysis – to develop both himself and the athletes he coaches. The role timing can play in enhancing performance and increasing buy-in. How do we keep our young hoopers healthy? What are they doing well in their training? And what can they improve upon? And what do THE BEST young players do that others can’t or won’t? If you train young athletes in any sport, you’re going to love this episode with Jeff Aldham! Jeff is a self-proclaimed “S&C Coach trying to develop hoopers”…and while he’s not wrong, I think that’s quite the understatement. He’s a guy that’s impacted players at every level of the game – from that fresh-faced middle school kid to the pro who is playing for Team Canada – and has had a tremendous amount of success along the way. And today, we’re going to take a deep dive into what it really takes to keep your hoopers healthy and on the court! We NEED variability in our training program because your sport isn’t providing you with that. – Jeff Aldham This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Jeff’s burning passion for hoops, and how it ultimately led him to becoming a coach. Why building good habits and a strong work ethic is so important for young athletes. The difference between passion and purpose. Jeff’s thoughts on injury prevention in basketball, and the challenges that young athletes are facing. Why you need a system of training, yet also need to be adaptable to the player standing in front of you. How to get the right “inputs” into your training, even if you don’t have a ton of equipment available to you. The role that variability plays in a well-rounded athletic development program. What young athletes MUST do if they want to maximize their performance and keep themselves on the court. Why mobility training is such a key component of Jeff’s system, and the primary areas he hones in on with basketball players. Training young athletes is tough these days – especially if you’re in the private sector. With so many athletes getting training at their high school, playing sports year round, and struggling to stay consistent with their workouts, how can we help them be successful? Well luckily my guy Ryan Patrick and I are here to help you out! Two of the biggest issues we in this population are: Programs that overemphasize just “pushing weights,” and The lack of solid speed training – which is what most young athletes ultimately need. So if your goal is to create fast, strong and robust high school athletes, I know you’re going to love this show. Let’s do this! I think (high school S&C) is a threat for a lot of coaches who don’t have good businesses, who don’t have really effective training because now these kids are doing stuff. And so you have to offer something different than just providing a service that they’re not getting. – Ryan Patrick This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why high school athletes today show up woefully undertrained. How a lack of training consistency is leading to poor athletic development overall. Ryan’s “side quest” analogy, and how it applies to young athletes getting in the weight room. Why high school S&C programs can be a blessing and a curse to young athletes. How large group S&C training will differ from smaller, more customized programming. The role of educating your athletes on all the aspects of physical development, and specifically, to them moving well! Why strength should NOT be the sole KPI in your high school athletes development. How to use better assessments that will drive your training programs. Why both Ryan and I moved from a more strength-centric to a more speed-centric training model. A gentle reminder: There’s more to being a good athlete than just having “fast feet.” How to find a blend between training movement and developing outputs. Why speed training should NOT be done at the end of practice. The power of creating a positive experience so athletes will want to come back for months (and years!) to come. Do you want to help your athletes get faster? More explosive? And teach them how to move effectively in the process? If so, you’re going to love this week’s episode with Lee Taft! From PE teacher to world-renowned speed coach, Lee has always questioned the current dogma when it comes to speed training. And in this episode, we’re going to break down (get it) some of the hottest topics in speed training today. The importance of heel contact in speed training. Why repositioning steps are so important for accelerating effectively. And finally, how to speed training fits into an overarching S&C program. Quite simply if you want to help your athletes get faster, you need to listen to this episode RIGHT NOW! Young athletes are exposed to these high thresholds and demands in sport, but not every kid has the ability to decelerate their body well. – Lee Taft This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Lee’s journey from PE teacher to elite speed coach. Why Lee was always curious and questioning others when it came to speed training. The power of band resistance, and the numerous ways you can use it to improve speed and agility. Coaching efficiency first, then speed second. How to effectively coach and cue closeouts in basketball. The power of the heels, and why cuing athletes to be “on the toes” is a mistake. Repositioning steps, and the difference between a plyo step and a hip turn (this distinction was new to me!) Why pivots are slow and coaches should stop using them. As an adult, it’s NORMAL to feel stuck at certain points in your career… …and I believe this is even more true in the fitness industry than others! Look, I’m 24 years in and I know there were numerous times along the way I felt like I was making zero progress. Couldn’t get a job out of college. Only working with broken people in a rehab job I hated after that. Grinding for hours on end doing in-home training. But rather than complain about everything that’s wrong, let’s focus on coming up with ideas to get you moving forward. Today’s episode is like a private, 1-on-1 mentorship or coaching call with yours truly. Whether you’re not making enough money, not getting great results, or simply don’t feel like you’re getting better, we’re going to walk you through 5 different reasons you might feel stuck, and how to fix it ASAP. Let’s do this! Social media is NOT continuing education. Is it inspiring at times? Sure. Does it give you some great ideas? Sure. But continuing education? That’s a strong hell no my friend. – MR This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Feeling stuck in your fitness career is normal. Financial struggles are a common issue in the fitness industry. You may be underpaid…OR you might be overvaluing your current skillset. Client-driven programming is essential for success. Are your programs really helping your clients meet their needs and goals? Communication is crucial in building client relationships. Continuous professional development is necessary for growth. Are you taking the time to truly understand your clients and athletes? In-person seminars and workshops can help keep the fire stoked and motivation high. Why social media should NOT replace formal continuing education. Seek out mentors to guide your professional growth. Identify gaps in your knowledge to improve as a coach. Apply what you learn in real-world scenarios. Teaching others solidifies your understanding of concepts. Surround yourself with motivated individuals to keep yourself engaged and continue to grow and evolve as a coach. Most “high level” trainers and coaches don’t like to talk about this, but we’ve ALL had crappy clients and athletes over the years. The person who is never motivated to train. Late cancels all the time (but doesn’t want to get charged). And literally sucks the life out of you every time they’re in the gym. But have faith my friend, because there’s a better way! In this show, I’m going to give you 3 steps every trainer and coach should take to create a stable of ideal clients that they love working with. Let’s do this! Culture is absolutely a thing. It’s something you need to be conscious of. And what I keep coming back to is that culture is driven from the top-down. – Mike Robertson 10 Quick Takeaways from The Physical Prep Podcast: Setting expectations and boundaries is crucial for client relationships. Envisioning your ideal client helps in attracting the right people. High performers respect your time and understand the value you bring. Not everyone feels the same way about the gym as you do. You need to respect your value as a coach and service provider. Setting expectations upfront is key to client success. Culture in coaching is top-down driven and essential for success. Reinforcing positive behavior encourages clients to meet expectations. Communication is vital when addressing client issues. Letting go of non-ideal clients is necessary for maintaining a healthy coaching environment. Level Up Your Program Design with Train Heroic! Do you work with athletes who want to improve their vertical jump? Are you curious about the differences between 2-leg and 1-leg jumping? Or how the best dunkers of all time approach their jump training? If so, you’re going to LOVE today’s episode! Tyler Ray is a former professional dunker and a true expert in the space of vertical jump training. His business is a combination of education for trainers and coaches like us, but he still works with athletes as well, helping them take their jump technique and performance to the next level. And in this week’s show, we’re going to take a deep dive into how YOU can help your athletes jump higher than ever before! It’s became a buzzword, right? The penultimate stride. Everybody now wants to speak on it and give their opinions on it. But a lot of people still don’t really understand its true purpose, and you can actually get yourself into a lot of trouble if you create a penultimate stride that’s too long. – Tyler Ray 10 Key Takeaways from This Week’s Physical Prep Podcast: A perfect jump approach involves smooth transitions and hip height management. Training intention is crucial for effective jump performance. Basketball players need to navigate defense, which will impact their jump technique. Common mistakes in jump performance include late lowering and diving through the penultimate stride. Understanding the difference between muscular and elastic jumpers is essential. Strength training should be tailored to the athlete’s jumping style. Low rim dunking is beneficial for practicing technique without high impact. Mastery in jumping comes from repetition and refining technique. Every athlete needs to find and flip their switch for optimal performance. Building confidence in weak legs requires more exposure to one-legged activities. Jumping should be viewed as a skill that requires practice, not just strength training. Have you ever thought about the BUSINESS SIDE of collegiate strength and conditioning? For instance, how do you go about hiring high-quality staff? How do you develop them and ensure they’re growing while under your tutelage? And how the heck do you decide what to spend money on? Well lucky for us, today’s guest has experience doing all of this! Eric Guthrie joined George Washington in 2021 and is responsible for overseeing the sports performance department and working directly with Gymnastics and Lacrosse. Guthrie came to GW from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he worked as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach since 2013. And in this episode, we’re going to break down the business of collegiate strength and conditioning! You have to turn the dial up and down…you’re not going to go into working with golf at the same intensity as you would with football or baseball. – Eric Guthrie 10 Quick Takeaways From This Week’s Physical Prep Podcast: Most great coaches have a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology. Make it a goal to work more hours and with as many athletes as possible when you’re young. Hiring should focus on good people FIRST – then skills. Curiosity and a growth mindset are essential traits for coaches. Regular assessments, high-quality meetings and good communication enhance the quality of your coaches and overall staff. Building trust with young coaches takes time and effort. Exposure to various training methods is crucial for growth. Make it a goal to understand the context of training principles, and where they originally came from. Budgeting in collegiate sports requires strategic planning, and you need to know what your overall vision is for your program. Finding work-life balance is an ongoing challenge for most coaches. How should our training change or evolve as we age? Is it time to hang up the old lifting shoes and take up stamp collecting? Or can we still get in the gym and get after it? Well if you’re over 40 (or getting there faster than you’d like), then this is the episode for you! In this week’s podcast, we’re going to cover a ton of concepts to help you stay strong, lean and athletic well into your 40’s and beyond. Whether it’s dialing in your training, dialing in your recovery, or optimizing your mental health and mindset, I guarantee you’ll take a thing or two away from this episode. Let’s do this! You don’t have to test your strength every week. If you train consistently, you know on those good days, the heavy weights are there. -MR 10 Takeaways from the Physical Prep Podcast: Aging doesn’t necessarily mean decline; it can mean improvement or expansion in numerous ways. Mobility work is essential at all stages of life, but especially as we age. Incorporating more frequent deloads can help improve recovery. Why you should focus more on “touching intensity” as you get older. Conditioning is vital for overall health and longevity, so you have to find ways to get it in your program. Rotate training emphases to avoid plateaus, mental stagnation, and never get too far away from any one physical quality. Strength training is critical as we age for maintaining muscle mass, strength, and keeping connective tissues strong. Recovery becomes more important as we age. Have you ever thought about how we can improve the healthcare system in our country? Maybe you got hurt, and didn’t have the ability to finish physical therapy. Maybe you realize that truly proactive healthcare starts with foundational elements like exercise, nutrition and recovery versus doctors visits and medication. Or maybe in a worst case scenario, you’ve lost a loved one to cancer or heart disease, simply because they were diagnosed too late. Well if you’ve ever thought there has to be a better way, you’re going to love today’s episode of the podcast. Dr. Jeremy Bettle is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the field of Human Performance. His role as an innovator and disruptor, over almost 20 years, at the cutting edge of high performance sport led to the development of world-leading systems of athlete care and optimization. Now, as the founder of Vitality Collective, Jeremy is applying these principles of athlete optimization to the broader field of longevity, with individuals who don’t leave any stone unturned in their pursuit of optimal health and vitality. And today, we’re going to talk about how Jeremy is making this proactive version of healthcare a reality! We start treating you BEFORE something hurts. We get you above strength levels so you don’t blow out your Achilles. – Dr. Jeremy Bettle 15 Quick Takeaways from This Week’s Physical Prep Podcast: Physical preparation is crucial for both athletes and general population. Biomechanics and neuroscience are both key in understanding performance. Injury prevention should be a proactive approach, not a reactive one. While many are focus on longevity, vitality is the key to getting the most out of those days. Monitoring health markers can prevent injuries in the general population. A multidisciplinary approach is essential for effective health management. The glorification of overwork can hinder overall performance. Rest is essential for high performance, not just for athletes. Sleep is the most effective performance enhancer we have available to us – make it a priority! Mental resilience is crucial for balancing work and family life. Exercise, including weightlifting, boosts brain function. Self-care is foundational for high performance in any field. We MUST shift our healthcare system from a reactive to proactive model. People are sick of the current healthcare system. Education is crucial for both practitioners and patients if we want to revolutionize healthcare. Building partnerships is essential for a cohesive system. If you’ve been following pro sports lately, it seems like every week an athlete from the NFL, NBA or MLB is dealing with a calf strain, or even worse, rupturing their Achilles tendon. And while you can obviously go to IG or TikTok and pick up some cool new exercises, I think it’s far more important to have a really good understanding of the lower leg anatomy, how to assess it, and from there how to train it effectively if we want to make a real impact in improving calf and Achilles function. And that’s why I’m so excited to have Dylan Carmody on the podcast – as he literally wrote an entire ebook on this topic! Dylan is a Physical Therapist and sports practitioner in Bend, Oregon. Along with practicing and working with local sports clubs in the Bend region, Dylan is a podcast host and individual contributor to Inform Performance and is the Clinical Marketing Manager at VALD Performance. And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into everything related to calf training and performance! You can’t hide from the calf…it’s ALWAYS there. – Dylan Carmody 10 Quick Takeaways from This Week’s Physical Prep Podcast: The soleus muscle plays a crucial role in lower limb function and injury prevention. Understanding the anatomy of the calf is essential for effective rehabilitation. Injury mechanisms can vary significantly between individuals due to anatomical differences. Rehabilitation strategies for tendons should include specific loading protocols. The relationship between muscle fiber types and performance is vital for training programs. Loading strategies should be tailored to individual responses. Incorporating various planes of movement is crucial for calf training. Slow to moderate speed running can be protective for calves. Short ground contact times may be beneficial during rehab. Quality over quantity in loading reps is essential. Rehabilitation processes can be counterintuitive, especially for calves. If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember the days of going to the grocery or drug store, heading over to the magazine rack, and flipping through the latest issue of Muscle and Fitness or Flex to see how guys like Arnold, Dorian Yates or Ronnie Coleman trained. Because in the 90’s and early 2000’s, before online website like T-Nation and Elite FTS really started to hit their stride, we got most of our training information from bodybuilding magazines like these. So if you grew up reading those magazines and idolizing the lifters it covered, how cool would it be to grow up and WORK for those very same magazines? Well today’s guest can give us an inside look – because that’s exactly what he did! Dr. Jim Stoppani is a leading authority on exercise science, sports nutrition, and supplementation. Over the past 15+ years, Dr. Stoppani has helped millions of people change their lives through science-based nutrition and supplement plans and expertly designed training programs. Dr. Stoppani received his doctorate in exercise physiology with a minor in biochemistry from the University of Connecticut, worked for Weider Publications for 13 years, and has co-authored numerous fitness-related books. And in this awesome conversation, Jim shares his journey from a childhood immersed in strength culture to becoming a leading figure in the fitness industry. The scale is NOT telling you the whole story. – Dr. Jim Stoppani 12 Quick Takeaways from the Physical Prep Podcast: The supplement industry often lacks transparency, leading to ineffective products. Research shows that weightlifting is crucial for fat loss, not just cardio. Muscle recovery is a calorie-consuming process that aids in fat loss. Smart training should be focused on both scientific research and real-world results. Cardio plays a significant role in calorie burn and cardiovascular health. Low-fat diets can negatively impact hormone levels. Keto can be effective for short-term weight loss but may hinder muscle gain. A balanced approach to nutrition is key for sustainable fat loss. Your body will eventually adjust to any diet or training regimen. Gradual changes in macronutrient intake can lead to sustainable weight loss. Blood work can reveal important health metrics for optimizing performance. Understanding hormone levels is crucial for effective training and nutrition. Starting with less volume in training can prevent injuries and promote longevity. Connect with Dr. Jim: Website Instagram X/Twitter YouTube Stop the Frustration! It seems like everybody and their mother is talking about force plates these days. And I’m obviously guilty of it myself…but only because I feel like force plates are the single-most impactful thing I’ve added to my coaching in the past five years. But what if you’re not a sports scientist – how do you get started? What tests should you use? And what metrics should you be looking at? Well if you’re curious at all about force plates or how to use them, you’re going to love today’s episode with Dr. John McMahon! Dr. McMahon is the Director of Research and Education at Hawkin Dynamics. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Salford, where he previously worked for more than a decade as a biomechanics researcher and educator. John has authored over 100 published journal articles and has presented his force assessment research at multiple international conferences spanning the fields of strength and conditioning, sports biomechanics, and sports science. And in this episode we’re going to take a deep dive into force plates and how to use them! Testing should feel like part of coaching. Dr. John McMahon 12 Quick Takeaways from the Physical Prep Podcast: Force plates provide valuable insights into athletic performance. Start with basic tests to build confidence in using force plates. Key tests for performance include counter movement jumps and isometric pulls. The ODS framework helps link output metrics to performance drivers. Athletes need to be educated on how to interpret their performance data. Communicating results to athletes is crucial for understanding. Relative forces are more significant than absolute forces. Tracking metrics helps refine coaching programs. Athlete motivation and effort are key to accurate assessments. Observing athletes during tests is essential for accurate data. Engaging with athletes during testing enhances the experience. Reducing the number of metrics can prevent overwhelm. Focus on the human aspect of coaching, not just data. The last couple of weeks have been, “busy,” to say the least. I flew out to Seattle last Wednesday at 7 am, in an effort to get there and spend time with Luka and Joel before the seminar started on Thursday. (Plus, I worked every second of the way in an effort to get a few key items done…more on this at a later date). Spoke and listened to the other AMAZING presenters on Thursday. Attended the lectures all day on Friday, as well as the VIP Dinner that night. Flew home Saturday (again working the entire flight), and was home exactly 14 hours before Team Robertson packed the car and drove to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for Fall Break. So needless to say, things have been a bit crazy and I wanted to try something new for this week’s podcast. I’ve obviously done “Random” Shows before, but those have mostly been me talking about random topics, or doing Q&A shows. This one is entirely different, as I’ve chosen my favorite segments from recent episodes and compiled them all into one AWESOME super episode. So whether you’ve listened to every single episode or some are totally new, I think you’re really going to love this show. Let’s do this! The first thing we need to do is define “What is Zone 2?” If all you’re talking about with Zone 2 is a just a heart rate range, then anything can get you into Zone 2 – a sauna can get you into Zone 2. But is sitting in a sauna going to make you a better endurance athlete? Probably not. – Joel Jamieson This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Andrew Paul on how he classifies and buckets his athletes. Adam Loiacono on training muscles before movements in the rehab process. Victoria Saucedo on the spicy knee health series she uses with her women’s basketball players. Jay DeMayo on strength training and the overreliance on the weight room. Charles Ashford on the biggest mistakes athletes make when bulking up. The difference between training professional and developing athletes. Vince Gabriele on Good, Better, and Best pricing options in your business. Rick Franzblau on when good training adaptations go too far. Erik Huddleston on the “co-worker”mentality of training pro athletes. Subscribe, Rate & Share! What happens when common sense fails us? Or maybe doesn’t tell us the whole story? Let me give you an example… I would assume if an athlete went out and played their most intense soccer match EVER, that they’d be more fatigued, which would increase their risk of injury, and/or would have poor force plate jumps after that match. And while that absolutely might happen – it also might NOT. So why is that? Well, that’s why we have today’s guest on the show!James Collins hails from Dublin, Ireland, and has made stops numerous stops in the MLS including Sporting Kansas City, Minnesota United FC, and the New England Revolution. And more recently, he’s become the special accounts manager for Soccer at Hawkin Dynamics, and started a PhD in Sport Science focusing on training load in elite soccer. And today, we’re going to talk about the relationship between training load, injury risk, and neuromuscular fatigue! I’m going to be really honest here…writing the intro for this podcast was REALLY HARD. After all, what do you focus on when the ENTIRE SHOW is so freaking good? Whether it’s talking about training autonomy, N=1 training, the art of performance management, different archetypes and training buckets, or the role of pure strength and force development in basketball, there’s so much good info here I don’t know where to start. But all that is thanks to today’s amazing guest – Andrew Paul. Andrew is in his 19 th year of performance training, and entering his 10 th year with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. But more importantly for us, he’s one of those guys that’s always thinking about training, performance, and how to make things just a little bit better. And today we’re going to take a deep dive into how he trains his basketball players to optimize their performance! The name of the game is consistency in the NBA. – Andrew Paul This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Andrew’s background and what’s new since he was on the show last. The power of classifying athletes to better understand their training needs. Muscular? Elastic? Forefoot/rearfoot elastic? Lots of thoughts on different movement archetypes. What role does pure strength/force development play with Andrew’s athletes? The difference between “training into” versus “training away” – and why your athletes need BOTH. What Andrew focuses on during his in-season workouts. The Health-Performance continuum, and where most of his athletes land. Thoughts on the current NBA big, and how his training has evolved to help support these athletes. Why he’s put such a massive emphasis on staff development and growth. The role flywheel training plays in his programs. Why it’s critical to understand both the individual and the teams vision of the athlete you’re coaching. Game day lifts: Good thing? Bad thing? Or it depends? How his thought process has evolved the most over the past 5 years. The role the modern day strength/performance coach plays to both the organization and its players. Imagine this scenario…you’re watching a sporting event, and an athlete gets injured. Maybe it’s something minor like a sprained ankle, or maybe something more severe like a hamstring pull or ACL tear. Have you ever wondered, what does the medical staff do right then? And how does that initial 24-48 hours set up the entire return to play process going forward? Well if you’re interested in how acute phase rehab blends into performance training, and then how we eventually work as a team to get that athlete back on the field, you’re going to love today’s episode with Adam Loiacono! Adam has over 15 years of experience in rehabilitation and performance training for professional and youth athletes, including reaching the NBA Finals with the Phoenix Suns and the MLS Cup with the New England Revolution. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and owns Loiacono Performance Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ, where he integrates sports science, physical therapy, and performance to optimize athletes’ training, recovery, and rehab. And in today’s episode, we’re going to help YOU understand the acute phase of rehab, and how to help support our AT’s and PT’s to get our athletes back on the field as safely as possible. I’d rather tell the strength and conditioning to pull back the reins, rather than having to encourage them to do more. – Adam Loicacono This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: About Adam and what’s new in his world. The FIRST THING he thinks about when he sees an athlete go down or get injured in a game. His steps or “phases” someone needs to work through when going from acute injury into return to play, and why strength is NOT the first box to tick. How swelling and inflammation dictate the process and timeline. The role of training muscles versus movements, especially early-on after an injury. Open vs. Closed Chain Activities: Are one better than the other? How an athlete’s mindset and psychology impact their rehab process. Why training the healthy limb can lead to faster progress down the line. The power of biological timelines in the rehab process. How the S&C coach can play a pivotal role in helping an athlete come back from an injury. Why building strong relationships with athletes during rehab can enhance their recovery experience. If you want to live a longer, healthier life, you’re going to LOVE today’s episode! Joel Jamieson is not only a great friend, but someone that has really started to make a mark in the longevity space. He was recently featured on Dr. Peter Attia’s podcast where they took a deep dive into everything HRV. But you may know him as a trusted expert in strength, conditioning, and energy systems for combat sports. His book, Ultimate MMA Conditioning, is one of the best S&C reads of all time, and he’s spent the past 20 years coaching world champion athletes. He’s also consulted extensively for teams and organizations including the Navy SEALS, UFC champions, and professional sports teams from the NFL, NBA, MLS, and NCAA. And in this episode, we’re going to dive into a ton of health-related topics to help YOU live a longer, healthier life! Lifting weights serves a very important purpose, but it is not building cardiovascular fitness. – Joel Jamieson This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new with Joel since the last time we chatted. How he’s shifted and evolved away from solely combat sports training to more longevity-focused content. The things EVERY 40+ year old should be focusing on to live a longer, healthier life. Things you should be considering when trying to stave off cardiovascular disease (CVD). The role genetics play in your health, and why you have to dig deeper on your own genetic structure. Joel’s serious health scare, and what he’s had to do to fight his family history of CVD. Why Zone 2 cardio IS NOT as easy as just lifting weights for extended periods of time. Do women need more – or less – Zone 2 training than men? The power of training the individual, not the gender. ONE THING Joel wish everyone learned from his podcast with Dr. Peter Attia. In this day and age, how do you find ways to truly “stand out” as a strength and conditioning or performance coach? Why is it important to understand the game, and then work backwards when designing a training program? And how do you know when what started off as “good” adaptations have actually started to NEGATIVELY IMPACT your athletes? If you’ve ever thought about any of these questions, then you’re going to love today’s episode! Rick Franzblau has spent close to 20 years at Clemson University. He’s currently is in his ninth year as director of Olympic sports performance, and 10th with baseball. At Clemson, Franzblau has worked with 11 ACC championship track & field squads, eight individual NCAA champions and seven track & field Olympians. In 2021, he worked with the national championship men’s soccer team. And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into biomechanics, arm care, and helping your athletes perform at their highest level! It starts with output and we start to peel back layers in the decision tree there. – Rick Franzblau This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Rick’s background and how he got started in the world of physical prep. How he got to Clemson, and why he’s never left! Why is it important to understand the game and then work backwards when designing programs or interventions? The difference between S&C and player development and sports performance. How throwing a baseball versus a football are different on the body. Rick’s thoughts on “arm care,” and how he sells it to his athletes. Why creating adaptations are important, but also knowing when a good adaptation has gone too far. How YOU as a coach can show value outside the traditional role as an S&C coach. The BIG Question. A really fun lightning round where we talk snowy New York colleges, his biggest takeaway from working with Bill, his favorite thing about working in baseball, and what’s next for Rick Franzblau. If you’ve ever followed an NBA season, you might think that once the regular season or playoffs are over, that the performance coaches get to take a 2, 3 or even 4 month break before getting back into that pre-season grind. But unfortunately, that’s just not the case. In fact, in most cases once the season is done, a whole new set of responsibilities emerge – and we’re going to lean into that topic today with my guy Erik Huddleston. Erik is currently a sports performance coach for the Indiana Pacers. Prior to his current role, he also worked as a G-League performance with the Indiana Mad Ants, was director of performance at the one and only IFAST, and also interned with both Texas Tech and Indiana University basketball. And in this show, we’re going to take a behind the scenes look at being a performance coach in the NBA! When you improve how something looks and feels, but it also has transferability over to the court, what else can I ask for? – Erik Huddleston This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new with my guy E since the last time we chatted. What the transition is like going from the private sector to the NBA world. Why ADAPTABILITY is so crucial if you want to work in pro sports. The biggest lessons he learned early on, and why there’s so much more to it than just coaching. How the roles of an NBA performance coach shift when the season is over. His role during NBA Summer League, and what he tries to get done during that 2-3 week stretch. The role consistency plays in doing your job at a high level. What goes into the job OUTSIDE of coaching? Interactions between teams, and how to improve communication across coaches to ensure athletes get the best possible outcomes. Football and rugby may be two of the most violent – and exciting – sports on the planet today. So how do you go about preparing young athletes for these sports? How do you get them prepared for the physical nature and brutality they’ll be exposed to on the field? And how can you make sure that the best overall athletes stay in the game long enough to show what they can REALLY do? Well luckily for you, my guy Andy Ryland and I are going to cover all that in today’s show! Andy is USA Football’s senior manager of education and training. He has consulted with programs, coaches and athletes at every level – from high school, the NCAA, NFL and professional and international level rugby. He is widely recognized as a foremost expert on tackling and the preparation for contact with athletes, and today, we’re going to take a deep dive into everything collision sports! When you talk to an elite level player they see the lean, the little movement, they see the opening before it’s there because their pattern recognition and game database is so massive. – Andy Ryland This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A brief bio about Andy and how he got started in physical prep. His career arc and how he ended up working with USA Football. For the uninitiated, the biggest similarities and differences between rugby and football. Andy’s thoughts on building more physically robust athletes. The biggest differences you see across levels – from youth, to collegiate, to professional athletes. Why it’s so important to help late-maturing athletes to “stay in the game.” Chinks in the armor: What are the biggest gaps he’s seen in the preparation of athletes? And how can we address these? At the youth level, what we’re doing well – and areas where we still need to improve Tackling prep: How do you get kids mentally and physically ready to run into and tackle each other? What is life REALLY like in the NBA? What are the pros and cons of being in that space? And if you ever leave, what’s it like transitioning into the private training space? If you’ve ever wondered about any of these questions, today’s guest is uniquely qualified to answer all of them! Mike Irr is the owner of Alpha Athletic Development, a private training facility in Atlanta. But prior to his time there, he also spent over a decade in the league – with stops in Chicago, Charlotte, Golden State, and Atlanta. Oh – and don’t forget that short stint as a PT student at IFAST as well! So in today’s episode, we’re not only going to look at what like if like in the NBA, but how to be successful both there and in the private sector! If you’re a guard I want you to be strong, but I also need you to get by somebody on the court. – Mike Irr This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A little bit about Mike and how he got started in the world of physical preparation. His career arc and all the stops he had along the way – from UCONN, to the NBA, to IFAST, and then back to the NBA. What life is really like in the NBA, and what the day-to-day job entails. Contrasting what life is like “in the league” versus what it’s like in the private sector. How he can leverage his time and what he learned in the NBA into his coaching today. How his philosophy has shifted and evolved since he first got started in the game. The intersection between S&C and PT, and how to better blend the two. Should strength coaches become PT’s? And what potential advantages are there to doing that? Okay serious question – have you ever pondered what the training is like for fighter pilots? Maybe it’s just me, but as a young kid growing up watching Top Gun I always wondered what training looked like for guys like Maverick, Goose, Iceman and Slider…and somehow I just knew it probably took more than just playing beach volleyball! And today, we’ve got someone that can really help us shed some light on this topic! Tyler Koch has over 13 years of experience in the field of Human Performance. Most recently, he worked as a Subject Matter Expert for the United States Air Force, overseeing Human Performance within the F-35 fighter pilot community. He was also integral in founding the first ever Human Performance Initiative within Undergraduate Pilot Training. And in this show, we’re going to take a deep dive into what it REALLY TAKES from a physical perspective to be a fighter pilot! If you can deadlift 1.5-2x your body weight, and if you can do that, your ability to pull G’s is going to be improved. – Tyler Koch This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How Tyler got started in the world of physical preparation. His career arc, and how he ultimately he ended up working for the Air Force. What physical tools does it take to be a fighter pilot? And is there a “perfect” archetype? The background of physical development in the pilot community, and how it’s evolved over the years. How Tyler trained his pilots, and how the various levels of school along the way prepared them differently Neck Training 101: How race driving and flying are somewhat – but not entirely – similar. The biggest pros and cons of working within the military, and the concept of building a culture within a culture. The BIG Question. And today, Lucy and I are going to take a deep dive into the exact skills that has made her gym such a success! Most people join the industry because they have a passion for fitness and lifting. No one joins the industry because they want to be someone’s friend. – Lucy Hendricks This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: The very cool story behind how Lucy got started in the industry (and yes I am biased for this one). How she moved from a “biomechanics coach” to one who focuses more on the soft skills. Why creating the appropriate gym culture was so important to Lucy. Her keys to creating better relationships and improving rapport with your clients and athletes. How to listen and empathize with your people, without taking their problems home with you. Hopefully we’ve all learned this by now, but you simply CANNOT train basketball players like powerlifters, or even football players.
