How Militarization & War broke the German government

In this episode of The Source, our senior editor Zain Raza interviews Reiner Braun, former executive director of the International Peace Bureau and peace activist, in-depth about German domestic politics. They also explore the role that militarization and war support played in the collapse of the coalition government of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Green Party, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). They also examine the upcoming federal elections in Germany in the context of the Ukraine conflict and assess the rise and impact of the pro-peace and NATO-critical party of Sahra Wagenknecht called Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice (BSW). Finally, they discuss Germany's reaction to the International Criminal Court's recent arrest warrant issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
ABOUT REINER BRAUN: Reiner Braun studied German Literature, History and Journalism. Since 1982 he has been actively involved in the German and international Peace Movement, working f.e. as Executive Director for Scientists for Peace and Sustainability (Germany) and the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES). Since 2004 Reiner Braun has been working for various projects related to the Einstein year at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and for the Max Planck Society. From 2006-2017 he was the Executive Director of the IALANA Germany and the Vereinigung Deutscher Wissenschaftler (VDW), the German pugwash group. He was from 2013 till 2019 one of the two Presidents of the International Peace Bureau and was till 2022 the Executive Director of IPB. He is one of the speakers of the German peace mouvement. He was a founding member of the international network "No to war - no to NATO" and is a member of its coordinating committee.
