The message was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. DESCRIPTION: Today, the Chautauqua movement focuses on a living history program in which performers, in costume and in character, bring historical figures to life through theatrical monologues. The 2024 Chautauqua theme is Lift Every Voice: 60 Years Since the Civil Rights Act. The theme is designed to educate, enlighten, and entertain audiences of all ages, cultures, and socio-economic demographics. In this service, Mrs. Rosa Parks, performed by Vanessa Adams-Harris, recounts her life experiences and the pivotal moment on December 1, 1955, when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus. Born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, Parks describes the systemic oppression faced by African Americans, her role as a secretary of the NAACP, and the inspiration she drew from figures like Emmett Till and Septima Clark. Rosa Parks’ story reflects her deep faith, commitment to equality, and the strength derived from her heritage and community. Her quiet but powerful resistance became a catalyst for the civil rights movement, illustrating the impact of one individual's courage in the fight for justice and equality.
