Week 761: “Whispering House” by Hania Rani ft. Olafur Arnalds
Manage episode 454571665 series 1375605
Every house whispers.
Mine gets most talkative in winter.
There’s one spot near the bottom of the stairs where putting pressure on just the right floor board makes the air duct beneath it thump lightly like a heartbeat.
The front door needs an extra gentle hip-nudge to close, but it lets you know you’ve hit the spot when the latch clicks, with a sound not unlike the clicking you’d do with your teeth when giving someone the finger guns.
And of course, when the wind whips up from the valley and slams into the side of the house, you can hear its old bones sigh just a bit.
I sometimes wonder how this house’s whispers have changed in its hundred-and-some years. What noises did the first owners, third owners, fifth owners once hear that the house has now grown out of? What new vocabulary will it learn when I’m gone?
What makes this a beautiful song:
1. Hania Rani clearly cares about the sonic details of each instrument. Some of the instruments here sound old and weathered, while others sound brand new.
2. The vocals are barely more than whispers.
3. The fade-out seems to last forever.
Recommended listening activity:
Writing a love letter to your house and leaving it in a place nobody’s likely to look for another hundred years.
