The importance of self-advocacy in a business-oriented healthcare system cannot be stressed enough. Our discussion today aims to help parents understand they are empowered already as expectant families to choose a supportive care provider and navigate the healthcare system confidently.

I feel like so many childbirth educators talk ad nauseum about the critical task of carefully selecting a care provider for pregnancy and birth. But we have to!! So many birthing families come back the 2nd time feeling so disappointed in not having invested that time and careful selection.

In today’s show we are emphasizing the need for proactive research to find a provider who supports natural birth and aligns with personal birth preferences and values. EVEN IF YOU WANT MEDICATION in your birth. You will have a better shot at lower interventions and possible complications caused by those interventions with a “hands off” provider who trusts your body to work with your baby.

We discuss the impact of large provider groups on continuity of care and lack of personalized support. And of course, a focus on advocating for oneself and the importance of midwifery care. We offer you some red flags to watch for, such as inflexible language and fear-based tactics from providers. These are much to common and are not specific to you because they are used with everyone.

There is significance in you feeling safe and heard in order to have a good birth experience for both you and your baby. There are challenges in switching providers late in the game which is why we want to reach you as early as possible with this information.
