Jordan shares her experience in the growth of tolerance from young age to adulthood, and the twins talk about how tolerance in general is necessary for life in our pluralistic world.

Takeaways:

  • Racism and intolerance is willful ignorance and denial of other human beings.
  • Exposure to other ethnicities, religions, etc. is so necessary from an early age, but it’s never too late.
  • It should not be your responsibility to make someone else from another ethnic/religious group feel safe around you.
  • Accepting others as they are does not negate your existence.
  • We are all the same on the inside. “Here at NASA, we all pee yellow.” - Hidden Figures
  • If people choose to look at people as “other,” we dehumanize them.
  • Dehumanizing people who are not like you creates an environment of mistrust that has proven to lead to very dangerous and deadly outcomes.
  • Demeaning a group for “jokes” is just not funny and can be confusing. It opens the door for others adopting stereotypes.
  • Be curious about people. Consider the human being behind the behavior. Tolerance starts with ourselves.
  • Whether it’s Mussar or other spiritual practices, curiosity about others can open the door to eventual acceptance of who they are.
  • “Be green and growing, or ripe and rotting.” Your choice.
