He is a laser physicist and a senior professor of nuclear and atomic Physics at TIFR Mumbai. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian Science Awards, and is also the recipient of the Infosys Award in 2015.
