The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Using one word for five different concepts is confusing at the best of time, but when that one word is controversial and emotionally charged, it makes acting with patience and wisdom even more difficult. Before we launch Christian Civics Foundations, our Executive Director thought it would be helpful to take a few minutes to examine a few very different things we might mean when we use the word "politics." Sign up for Christian Civics Foundations at christiancivics.org.…
Dr. Doug Trick of the Canada Institute of Linguistics joins us this week to talk about how translating the Bible changes the way he thinks about not just evangelism and discipleship, but communication in general. Our host reflects on Dr. Trick's experiences and an old episode of "Doctor Who" to draw some conclusions about how we can argue more healthfully in the church. Visit christiancivics.org for show notes, including more information on how to sign up for our upcoming Christian Civics Foundations cohort.…

Why do people who share our faith not share our politics? Is it because they're stupid? Wrong? Malicious? Liars? In this excerpt from a 2020 Christian Civics class, we cover why it's not helpful to jump straight to those conclusions, and start looking at a few alternatives that are less dramatic but more useful.…
This week, we welcome three guests to lead us in prayer for the horrific and deteriorating situation on the ground in Afghanistan. At the beginning of 2018, Executive Director Rick Barry sat down with Bill Henson of Posture Shift Ministries (formerly called Lead Them Home) to discuss losing cultural power, grieving alongside the grieving and whether we should think of the US as a Christian nation. Those topics have only become more relevant in the three years since the episode aired. So this week, we re-visit those topics with the expanded cut of that 2018 interview. The reflection and prayer from the original episode, along with links to learn more about Posture Shift Ministries, can be found at christiancivics.org.…

This week, we welcome Sandra George, an HR professional with over 15 years of experience helping a range of different companies find the right people for the right jobs. The things we consider to be "prophetic" shape both the way we present our faith to other people and the kinds of behaviors we reward in our brothers and sisters. Our Executive Director offers a brief reflection on how the biblical prophets may challenge our understanding of what prophets are actually supposed to do.
