This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for January 21st, 2021.
Several states continue to report they’re running out of vaccine. Tens of thousands who got appointments for the first dose are having those appointments canceled. New shipments go out every week, and both the government and the drug manufacturers have said there are large quantities in the pipeline.
Various countries are experiencing surges in new cases, but none more so than Portugal. It has the highest 7-day average rate in the world of new cases per 100,000 and the second-highest rate of new deaths. Health experts predict it will peak next week.
In the good news column, a new study from Israel's Sheba Medical Center suggests the Pfizer vaccine does, in fact, reduce transmission. After dose #2, subjects had significantly higher levels of antibodies than even those who recovered from severe COVID-19 infections. It’s preliminary but suggests fully vaccinated people won't shed the virus, meaning pass it on to others.
Germany’s leadership says they may have to close its borders if other European countries don’t take steps to stop the spread of the coronavirus, especially the more transmissible strains. Germany shares borders with nine countries.
If you were planning a fun trip to sunny Florida to get vaccinated, you may want to reconsider. That state will soon require proof of residency for people getting vaccines. That means a Florida ID or utility bill. When vaccines were opened to anyone 65 and older, it created both long lines and an influx of vaccination tourism.
In the United States cases were down 11%, deaths up 12%, and hospitalizations were flat over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 8th.
There are now 9,614,365 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Georgia.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Forest, PA. Montour, PA. Morgan, KY. La Salle, TX. Hall, TX. Webb, TX. Richmond, VA. Oldham, KY. Jim Hogg, TX. And Roger Mills, OK.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Arizona, West Virginia, California, and South Carolina.
The infection reproduction rate is currently highest in Hawaii, Washington, and Arizona. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are West Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois.
There’ve been a total 406,001 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.66%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 590. Texas 440. Pennsylvania 405. Arizona 262. New York 240. Georgia 196. Missouri and Alabama 157. Florida 142. And New Jersey 136.
Globally, cases were up 1%, and deaths up 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 11.
Globally, there are 25,374,640 active cases.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 188,426. Brazil 64,126. Spain 41,576. The U.K. 38,905. And France 26,784.
There have now been 2,073,866 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
