Most of us contain multitudes – human beings are complicated and often confusing.

Once when asked to “just be yourself,” Bob Dylan responded with: “no problem, but which self do you want me to be?” Many of us can relate to this because we can be one way in one situation but completely different in another. We’re all a complicated mix.

Our temptation however, when it comes to other people, is to simplify them or label them with a word or a phrase; often that word or phrase is drawn from a person’s worst moment. We see the complexity in our selves, but we deny it in others when we label them.

Murderer.

Adulterer.

King David was both yet somehow, he was also called a man after God’s own heart. Not only that, but David is also often identified with the messianic identity that Jesus came to embody. That kind of complexity can be hard for many of us to reconcile.

Join us this week as we look at the towering figure of King David and try to figure out where we can see Jesus in his story.
