Let's get started!

First we are pleased to welcome back to the Show, our friend Shane Malloy from HockeyProspct Radio, hey Shane, thanks for coming back on the show.

  • First for those not familiar with today's topic, let's take a second to set some context.
  • Currently the NCAA does not allow players to play DIV 1 that are considered pro or have played pro hockey. This has included the CHL (WHL, OHL, QMJHL)
  • This is why players like Macklin Celebrini play in leagues like the USHL, BCHL etc and maintain their NCAA eligibility.
  • So what has happened to potentially change this, why now?
  • If this change happens, it will drastically change the landscape of junior hockey and the player development path, in literally every league!
  • Currency the CHL/NHL agreement prevents players from joining the AHL. Some players like Shane Wright and recently Mitch Marner were good examples of tweeners - too good for OHL, not quite ready for NHL. Many think the AHL would be a good place for them to develop. If the NCAA becomes an option do you think we could see 19 year old players playing in the NCAA vs older competition for better development. And if this becomes a reality, does the CHL/NHL transfer agreement get revisited as a result?
  • The USHL is a feeder league for the NCAA, if the CHL soon becomes a feeder league, could there be a union where the jr hockey map is completely redrawn that includes the CHL leagues and the USHL?
  • If so could we see theMemorial Cup replace the host city (which is heavily flawed) with the USHL champions and simply have a host city?
